Essay about simulation in health care
Clinical simulations
Don’t take our word for it - see why 10 million students trust us with their essay needs.
The experience that I had in simulation was great. I expected it to be very different opposite of what I thought. I was nervous and anxious when simulation day was coming up. The scenarios that were performed taught me a lot of things and prepared me in the future nursing career. What I thought I did well is being clients advocate. In the scenario with Henry he had COPD and was having shortness of breath during the simulation. I stood there by him while my colleagues were preparing medications for him. I have learned that we as nurses cannot leave our client unattended especially when client is having SOB and is in distress. It is very important to put your client’s priorities first. 1. What did you identify as areas for improvement in the
simulation today? The areas of improvement that I can identify is time management. When everything happens so fast it is very important to act fast. Going back to Henry when he was having shortness of breath it is very important to implement cares right away and have his inhalers right there ready for him if elevating head of bed does not work. Communication is another key especially when family members are present such as in Timmy’s case to educate mother on importance of not smoking in from of him due to exposure of second hand smoke. 2. Based on your simulation experience what and how you will implement what you learned in to your future practice? Having to go through this simulation experience will help me prepare for anything can happen when you care for that individual. As for Pam, she had passed away having this simulation experience gave me an opening on how to handle situation better especially with the family. In my future practice, the experience that I went through this simulation with Pam will help me to a better communicator with client and family members because nurses are not only dealing with their clients but whoever is involved in their car.
Which brings about the question as to just how effective is simulation training? According to Kneebone, Nestel, Vincent, & Darzer (2007), “To be effective, however, such simulation must be realistic, patient-focused, structured, and grounded in an authentic clinical context. The author finds the challenge comes not only from technical difficulty but, also from the need for interpersonal skills and professionalism within clinical encounters” (p. 808). Most mannequins do not have vocal ability or the ability to move, and therefore cannot provide the proper a spontaneous environment for learning. Therefore, acquiring critical thinking skills can be somewhat challenging, in this type of simulated setting.
My research paper is on the healthcare occupation, in particularly, the field of licensed practical nursing, also called licensed vocational nurses. In my paper, I will cover such things as the definition of career choice, certain requirements, the expected job duties and responsibilities, any additional licensure that is required. After discussing these topics, I will then point out the potential of finding a job, the ranges of salary, as well as the environment I would be working in. Finally, I will talk about the potential growth in this field and legal requirements. Now i will start with the definition of my career choice.
On the 1st of November 2013, I performed my first simulation on the module, Foundation Skills for Nursing. This simulation was on checking for vital signs in patients particularly, measuring the blood pressure (BP) which is the force of blood vessels against the walls of the vessels (Marieb and Hoehn, 2010). We also measured the temperature, pulse and respiratory (TPR) rates of a patient. This simulation’s objective was to engage us in practising some basic observation techniques taken on patients in and out of hospitals and to familiarise us on some of the tasks we will be performing when in practise. I will be applying the “What”, “So what”, and “Now what” model of reflection in nursing by Driscoll (2000).
On the other hand, I learned new concepts and terms. Simulation repeats some essential aspects of patient situation so that the situation may be understood and managed when it occurs in real clinical practice. Students in the school of nursing use the simulation learning center to learn and get experience in the field. The simulation is an educational process that requires the learner to demonstrate procedural techniques, decision making, and critical thinking. I learned that a simulation experience allows students to critically analyze their own actions and reflect on their own skill set. As a nursing student, I learned you have to complete clinical hours and practice in the simulation learning center. To become a certified nurse there are many training courses, exams to pass, and in the field experience to complete. Health professionals such as a nurse,
Ever since I was younger, I wanted to get into the medical field. Both my grandmothers used to work in the hospital and I would always wanted to tag along. Following them to work influenced my decision to work in a hospital. Every time I tag along, I would see many interesting things that would catch my attention and make me curious. There was a lot of materials such as the stethoscope, weighing machine, and etcetera that I would pretend to be a doctor or nurse examining imaginary people. It was absolutely perfect because I always wanted to help people. So this fall of 2014, I will be starting my education on becoming a nurse anesthetist.
A model is a simplified representation of the structure and content of a phenomenon or system that describes or explains the complex relationships between concepts within the system and integrates elements of theory and practice (Creek et al 1993).
With technology moving so quickly within the medical and nursing fields, it is vital to embrace new and innovative ways to learn how to care for a patient. A nurse or nursing student is faced with the ever growing challenge of keeping up with new technologies. A fairly new way to gain education and build upon skills is with the use of simulated based learning. With the use of a simulated nursing environment, a student will be able to increase their level of understanding of new skills and technologies; this great resource has three major forms of real-life reproduction, can be used in many different areas of nursing, provides a means to evaluate a student’s understanding and demonstration of a skill, and eliminates the potential for harming a patient. With all education, the ultimate goal of mastering a specific trade or skill is the desired end result.
Nursing has always been a key career in the health care system. Although it is not often focused on in media and stories surrounding health care, nursing is a career of great importance. If any patient was asked about their experience at a hospital or a care center, many will mention the capability and care that they received from the nurses. The health care system could not function efficiently, if at all, if nurses were not present to perform their part. Nurses are more than just physicians support staff. Of interest in this paper is why people choose to study nursing in university or college. From students just graduating high school to mature student who have prior degrees or education, nursing is a popular choice as a path to study
Through this essential, I have been able to integrate biophysical, psychosocial, analytical, and organizational sciences into my area of practice as an educator. I learned to improve my advocacy and mentoring skills providing my students a non-judgmental learning environment. The clinical rotations often bring forth ethical dilemmas and through debriefing the students and this writer are able to advocate for the patient. Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Improvement and System Thinking are critical for improving quality patient outcome. The DNP program prepares the graduate to evaluate practice approaches based on scientific research findings. Because, I education student nurses; I have the responsibility to keep up with new best practices in healthcare, and transfer this knowledge to the students. Clinical Scholarship and Analytical methods for Evidence-based Practice, I have been able to develop a PIOCT question and review the literature of the value of simulation labs. However, my question may have to be reframed for there were few studies that demonstrate to the percentage of time spent in simulation versus transitional clinical rotation. Information system/technology and Patient Care Technology and patient Care Technology for the Improvement and Transformation of
For my sports medicine profession, I choose nurse practitioner. I was drawn to this occupation simply because of the ability to make a difference in people's lives. Some other contributing factors are the amount of schooling, salary, and leadership responsibilities associated with the job. Many of my family members have gone into nursing and have had a positive experience. Becoming a nurse practitioner requires many years of formal eduction beyond high school. Typically, it usually takes six to eight years of eduction and training to become a nurse practitioner. Nurse practitioners must complete a four-year Bachelor's of science in Nursing (BSN). After earning the BSN, one will need to complete a master's degree program that trains nurse practitioners. Nurse practitioners must also be certified in CPR, AED, and First Aid (Health careers).
This essay is going to reflect upon the nursing skills I developed during a period of placement simulations, placing emphasis on oral care, communication with a non-engaging patient and bed bath. It will outline the fundamental aspects of clinical nursing skills that I have begun to acquire. This will also highlight the learning processes which took place and how it helped me to enhance my knowledge, and ethical values in order to deliver quality and safety of care. Using a variety of sources from current literature, I will use a reflective model to discuss how I have achieved the necessary level of learning outcome. By utilising this model I hope to demonstrate my knowledge and understanding in relation to these skills as well as identifying areas with scope for learning.
Certainly, I began with the goal getting of his vital sign and giving him a bed bath. Fortunately I had practice how to take a vital sign and giving a bed bath before my first clinical at the university skill lab and I had developed this confidence before my clinical tour. That day will be mastering the skill which I had just learned in manikins, and applying in real human with huge safety precaution. In between morning my instructor was giving me a brief before I getting to the patients room. From her experience she knew what kind of challenges and a patient behavior can be I face. As I proceeded to my own patient, I hit a roadblock that would give me a flat tire for the rest of the shift.
Pursuing nursing is my passion as it is my ambition to be there to help and serve others which I know will bring value to my own life as well. Whether that is in a position of health promotion and teaching kids about stress relief at a health fair like I was able to this last fall. Or, being there when they are in a health crisis I want to get to know my clients so I can best serve them by truly taking the time to get to know their individual needs. Staying true to my values of faith, family, and serving others my career goals aim to look at the bigger picture. Through pursuing my passion of nursing my desire is to continually learn from experiences, take on opportunities to learn to be a good leader, and continue to serve my
My reasons for selecting a career in nursing stem directly from my desire to help our prospering population and community. This career appeals to me because it embodies what I strive to become, a person of influence, a guide, a respected adult, a mentor, and a person that can be trusted and looked up to with great passion. Another reason for selecting a career in nursing has a lot to do with my current job position at Generations Elder Care. Working with the elderly community at this personal care home has enriched my life in many ways, including one for my passion of learning more about the nursing field. As I shadowed the nurses entering the facility I watched them do their assessments on the residents which has peaked my curiosity. I believe being a nurse presents daily challenges which are unique, interesting, and rewarding and that is another reason why I want to become a nurse. Knowing that I have helped someone in some way possible gives me a feeling of fulfillment and enjoyment that I never understood or had before. And this career offers just that, and that is exactly why I...
My choice of nursing as a career was inspired by past experiences that made me appreciate the field and its virtues. My mother was an obstetrician-gynecologist in China. I grew up having spent lots of time in her hospital. The medical field really appealed to me. Nevertheless, my mom thought that being a teacher was a better career choice for me. As a result, I worked as a high school teacher till my husband and I came to the U.S. to pursue our post-graduate education. I started my retail business in Madison, Wisconsin after I earned my master’s degree in Organization Development. My life appeared to have nothing to do with my childhood medical dream. However, things changed when both of my sons were diagnosed with Autism. The successful experience
