Importance of the Induction in
The Taming of the Shrew
Many acclaimed scholars argue that the Induction in William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew is unnecessary and irrelevant to the main plot. (Bloom, 28) Shakespeare placed the induction into The Shrew for a specific dramatic purpose. The comedic tone of the play would be lost without the induction, resulting in a more literal interpretation of the play thus leaving the reader unable to distinguish the author’s true intention. One cannot fully grasp the meaning of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew until one understands the importance of the tie between the induction and the main plot. Shakespeare reveals this tie with the use of theme, character ties, gender roles, and imagery.
Several themes are apparent which help tie the Induction to the plot. The most emphasized theme is that of Appearance vs. Reality. An example of this Appearance vs. Reality in the induction is the practical joke The Lord plays on Sly where Sly appears to be a Lord who has just woken up from a coma when in reality he is merely a beggar dressed in lords clothing. Shakespeare inserted this obvious example of Appearance vs. Reality so the reader would be aware of the theme later on in the play. Shakespeare uses this increased awareness of the theme in showing the reader Katherine’s true feelings. On the surface it appears that Katherine is directly opposed to marry Petruchio. Katherine even says that she was “… forced/ To give [her] hand opposed against [her] heart/ Unto a mad-brain rudesby, full of spleen,” (III.ii.8-11) when Petruchio is late arriving to their wedding. If Katherine truly were opposed to her union with Petruchio she would have not been this upset about being jilted. This fear of being jilted stems from having fallen in love with Petruchio. This goes against the appearance of hate that Katherine puts up throughout the play against Petruchio.
Another link between the Induction and the main plot is the outstanding similarities between the characters in each part. An example of this tie is the parallel of The Lord in the induction to Petruchio in the main plot. The second picture illustrates the myth of Apollo and Daphne. In this myth Apollo falls in love with Daphne who resists his affections and flees from him. When he finally catches her she transforms into a laurel tree so she would be unable to be exploited by Apollo. Apollo then acknowledges defeat and says that since she can’t be his wife he will decorate himself with her leaves (www.loggia.com). This is much the same as Petruchio and Katherine. Katherine is resistant to Petruchio throughout the play. When Petruchio finally “catches” her she acts obedient so that he cannot torment her anymore. Petruchio also “decorates” himself with his wife’s new show of obedience with the bet at the end of the play.
The ties between the Induction and the main plot are undeniable. Shakespeare clearly uses the Induction as a means to set up the themes and ideas expressed in the plot. Whether it is by theme, character similarities, gender roles, or imagery Shakespeare put in the Induction for a specific reason.
A long time ago, a drunken man fell asleep outside an alehouse. This man, Christopher Sly, was discovered by a mischievous lord who took him into his home. The witty lord then convinced Sly that he was a lord, as well. The lord then put on a play for him. The play, The Taming of the Shrew, was about the two young daughters of Baptista. The youngest daughter, Bianca, wished to wed but her father, Baptista, would not allow this until his eldest daughter, Katherina, was married. Under normal circumstances, it would be easy to find a husband for Katherina with all her beauty, but all her beauty was covered by her shrewd personality. By this time Bianca's suitors were growing very impatient, so they decide to team up and find a husband for Katherina. In jest they mentioned their plan to a friend, Petruchio, who surprisingly agreed to marry Katherina. All her beauty and wealth were enough for him. Katherina reluctantly was wed to Petruchio and she was taken to his home to be tamed. With Katherina out of the way, Bianca was now allowed to marry Lucentio, who offered her father the highest dowry for her. In the final scenes of the play, Katherina proves that she is tamed by winning an obedience contest at a dinner party. Katherina is now even more in accordance with her wifely duties than Bianca. A fare is a type of comedy based on a ridiculous situation. The Taming of the Shrew, an eminent example of a farce, is the first of three farces written by Shakespeare.
Through the ages, it is common for words to change in meaning. As the world around us changes, words often take on new meanings to accommodate the changes in lifestyle and society caused by progress. Thus, it is easy to become confused when reading literature that was written several centuries before, since the very same words may hold varying significance. In "The Taming of the Scold," D.E. Underdown offers background information which makes Shakespeare's The Taming of The Shrew much more understandable in terms of the discordant ideas on women in society in different time periods.
By charming her with kind words, Petruchio is able to manipulate Katherine into marriage and woo her, but in an unaccustomed way, as Kate is not used to men being so nice and direct with her. Petruchio is able to achieve this end by manipulating Katherine’s words. He twists what Kate says and makes it seem as if she is coming on to him sexually, while in reality he is the one implying the sexual innuendo. This manipulation can be seen when they have an argument about whether or not the wasp carries his sting on his tail or tongue, and Petruchio says “What, with my tongue in your tail? The most important factors to community policing include personalization, partnership and problem-solving (Allender, 2004:19). The idea is to create a relationship with citizens that is trustworthy and honest. When officers begin to use force to control the community, citizens began to view officers as authority figures instead of service officers that are there to protect and serve. This results in a break down of the relationship between officers and the community. In community policing force should only be used if other efforts are deemed ineffective.
Many would perceive madness and corruption to play the most influential role in Hamlet. However, it could be argued that the central theme in the tragedy is Shakespeare's presentation of actors and acting and the way it acts as a framework on which madness and corruption are built. Shakespeare manifests the theme of actors and acting in the disassembly of his characters, the façades that the individuals assume and the presentation of the `play within a play'. This intertwined pretence allows certain characters to manipulate the actions and thoughts of others. For this reason, it could be perceived that Shakespeare views the `Elsinorean' tragedy as one great puppet show, "I could see the puppets dallying".
In the political era of policing, police were agents who were accountable to the local politicians. What worked in this era is police were active members in the community and involved in community benefitting programs. What did not work were discrimination and the organizational disorganization. Police officers routinely abused individuals who were not members of the community and there was no accountability due to officers being only accountable to local politicians. The political era of policing transitioned to the reform era because of these problems. In the reform era of policing, police officers were agents of crime control. What worked in this era was the hierarchy created for agency organization is still used in modern day policing. What did not work in this era was public fear rose exponentially. The reform era transitioned into the community era of policing due to the reform era not being able to handle the socially changing landscape. In the community era of policing, police officers are about problem-solving and engaging the community members. What works in the community era of policing is the relationships built within the community and the changing approach of crime prevention instead of a reactive approach. This depiction of Petruchio conforms to Shakespeare’s technique of using false realities, in order to create humour. This can also be seen in the false identity that Petruchio puts forth in his quest for dominion over Kate (that of the eccentric egomaniac). However, these false realities are not enough by themselves, as the audience has nothing to go by but what they see before them, and so they are not to know that this is not Petruchio’s true personality, and so Shakespeare employs another essential element of humour: he lets the audience know what is truly transpiring, while the characters themselves remain oblivious to the truth. He does this using a soliloquy, in which Petruchio states the strategies he shall use in order to tame Kate:
Community Orientated Policing is widely held as the new and correct style for American policing. For the past decade the community policing movement has been gaining momentum acquiring the support of politicians, scholars, reformers, and the public. Police chiefs around the country are now feeling the pressures of implementation from citizens and local government officials. Many high ranking professional police organization have placed their seal of approval on the new style of policing, including the Police Executive Research forum, the Police Foundation, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, The National Organization Of Black Law Enforcement Executives, And the National Sheriff’s Association. The following U.S. presidents Bill Clinton, George Bush, And Ronald Reagan have all supported community policing, and with the recent passage of the 1994 Crime Act, community policing has received the approval and go ahead from the Federal government (Maguire p368). Due to the involvement of the federal government many American police departments are reporting that they already have or are attempting to implement a community policing program, eventhough a large number of them do not fully understand the implication and obstacles they face with the implementation of the program. Most of the agencies are just inquiring due to the funding. Most of the police organizations applying for the grants do not fully understand the new style, and either intentionally or unintentionally misuse the funds. Community orientated policing is a proactive philosophy that promotes solving problems that are either criminal, affect the quality of life, or increase citizens fear of crime. It involves identifying, analyzing and addressing community problems at their source. Unfortunately, many individuals, both in and outside of policing see community policing as merely putting officers on foot or bike patrol, or by opening mini-stations amongst the community. These approaches misrepresent the true potential of community policing and establish simplistic expectations. (Glensor p14). Called "cursed Kate" throughout the play, Katherine is openly jealous of the attention he sister is receiving, whereas she, because she speaks her mind, is being bypassed and even avoided in the wooing process. Katherine reveals this attitude in act 2 scene1, lines 31-35, "nay, now i see she is your treasure, she must have a husband; i must dance barefoot on my wedding day, and for your love to her, lead the apes to hell. Talk not to me i will sit and weep!...." This anger is not concealed, it serves to provide motivation as to why a rational person would rebuke petrucchio so rudely upon first encountering him. Love, lust and infatuation all beguile the senses of the characters in this dreamy and whimsical work of Shakespeare, and leads them to act in outlandish ways, which throughly amuses the reader. True love does prevail in the end for Hermia and Lysander, and the initial charm of infatuation ends up proving to have happy consequence for Helena and Demetrius as well. Even when at first the reader thinks that, in theory, the effects the potion will wear off and Lysander will once again reject Helena, Oberon places a blessings on all the couples that they should live happily ever after.
Community oriented policing is best characterized as a partnership between the police and the community. Dempsey & Forst (2016) By forming a relationship with emphasis on proactive, problem oriented policing instead of incident policing, the dialogue and teamwork will become a more effective partnership as well. However, in my community, most of the community policing has phased out over the years due to lack of cooperation from the community and budget cuts. As a police department, if we do not fulfill our role in prosecuting these individuals we will have lost the trust and faith of the community that we need the support of. We need a rational and effective strategy that will progressively increase our positive community relations; rebuilding the trust and confidence the citizens once had. Community policing is an age-old method that works to reach out to communities that have presented issues with the police force and makes efforts to improve the conditions of the community. One aspect of community policing is to demand the police to be accountable to the community (Gaines and Worrall, 2015). When the community holds the police accountable for their actions, the officers will use more discretion in situations and provide solutions that work best for the citizen and the community. The second aspect of community policing is placing a larger emphasis on being personally connected and involved in the community rather than an officer ostracizing himself as different (Gaines and Worrall, 2015). This personal connection will allow the community to have a stronger personal bond with officers and this in turn creates a trust level that is unmatchable. I believe a closer relationship between the police and the community is a good idea because involving the community can help create a safer crime reduced environment. As Leighton (2016) states the definition of community policing as "a philosophical, organizational, and operational approach to urban policing which emphasizes a police-community partnership to solve local crime and disorder problems" (p. 129). I find involving the community can establish trust between the police and the citizens as they are both working towards a common goal, as we can see community partnership creates a sense of alliance in keeping order (Leighton, 2016, p. 130).
Community policing is defined as police officers developing community partnerships, engaging in problem solving, and implementing community policing organizational features. Community policing emphasizes proactive problem solving in a systematic and routine fashion. Rather than responding to crime only after it occurs, such as after a 911 dispatch call, community policing encourages agencies to proactively develop solutions to the immediate underlying conditions contributing to public safety problems. Problem solving must be infused into all police operations and guide decision-making efforts. Agencies are encouraged to think innovatively about their responses and view making arrests as only one of a wide array of potential responses. Implementing the model changes the structure of policing and the way it is managed. Community policing helps build up and strengthen the community by creating a link between police and the community. The partnership, then can, develop over time, ultimately aiding police in discovering the fundamental causes of crime within the neighborhood. Community involvement increases the resources police forces have available in crime prevention. Familiarization of community members, may allow officers to obtain valuable information regarding criminal activity.
