The information and communication technology (ICT) revolution has widely affected every domain in human life in the last decades. Hence, using the computer has become an important tool in the teaching and learning process. It plays a remarkable role in learning and teaching English as a foreign language (EFL). According to Al-Menie (2008) "Word processors, for example, are excellent tools for students who may have trouble organizing their thoughts and then retaining those thoughts through correct spelling and grammar to convey their messages and present their ideas tidily." (p.4) Hence, it can be said that the word processor is an application, which can be considered as a valuable tool in teaching /learning writing. It is not only used as a facilitating tool, it motivates, increases the students ' confidence, and gives them the time to practice their skills in writing. This research sheds the light on the word processor as an effective tool and Saudi EFL students’ attitudes towards it in EFL writing classes, in addition to the possible barriers that may hinder their use of the word processor. The impact of the word processor on writing skills has been interesting for many researchers. Michaela Cullington, a student, wrote a paper “Does Texting Affect Writing?” in 2010 for an English class. The paper is an examination of texting and the belief that it negative effective student’s writing. Cullington goes into detail about textspeak- “language created by these abbreviations”- and their use in formal writings. She organizes the paper in a way that is confusing to understand at first (pg. 1). At the end of the paper, she discusses her finding in her own research which comes to show that texting does not affect writing. In the article, “Does Texting Affect Writing?”, the author Michaela Cullington conveys her speculation that texting does not correlate to how students write formal essays. At the beginning of the article Cullington introduces the term texting and the convenience texting brings. Later expressing her concern that the texting language “Textspeak” is actually affecting students writing; then contradicts these views by using primary and secondary sources (news articles, books, her own surveys and research). In addition, she uses an anecdote to tell of her own experience with texting and writing. Together with other evidences and research put together, she uncovers the debate between textspeak and formal writing. On the basis of her research, she concludes that the state of texting does not interfere with writing or writing abilities.

As students become more and more reliant on the tools of technology, they are more likely to do the bulk of their writing on social media. Texting, social media sites, and email are becoming the primary ways people communicate, which is shortening communication and is causing students to become used to leaving out punctuation and using abbreviations (2, p.1). The negative results brought on by the use of technology is becoming a serious threat to the use of formal writing. Students are more likely to commit grammatical errors because of the spell check and autocorrect features added on smart devices and computers, which automatically fix misspelled words. Becky Atwood, coordinator of the Cape Public School’s Adult Education and Literacy Program writes, “Technology has affected student’s ability to write and write coherently. They have to learn what they might have already known, or learn new skills that they have never mastered, because they are used to writing informally…” (2 p.4). Technology’s negative impacts on writing are real. Dependence and use of technology is causing students to miss out on developing writing skills, and it is noticeable. Computers have impacted me in many ways. Although I do not like to be instructed in how to do certain assignments (web sites and so forth) I do enjoy being able to have the luxury to type a paper on the “easy to use,” Microsoft word. Being an English major, it is very important that editing be taken very seriously and it makes my life a lot easier knowing that if I get sick of making corrections on a 20 page paper, the computer will pick out the obvious ones so that it saves me time. This may sound like a lame reason, but it saves me a lot of time. Another thing that I love is that it’s so easy to make change to a document font in any way that I want. If I want the words to be size twenty-two then all I have to do is highlight and hit the button. If I want to make a cool cover page with different font styles I can choose from a variety of different designs. Two of my favorites are comic sans and futura xblkit bt.

This kind of teaching method is called telecollaboration and has been employed using different formats in classes all over the globe with the aim of developing intercultural competence and foreign language skills, such as e-tandem, virtual online exchanges, collaborative online international learning, and many others.
