What is typography?
It is important that graphic designers understand the concept and the term of the word ‘Typography’. Typography is simply the art and technique of arranging type and also the design and use of typefaces as a movable type. It’s central to the work and skills of a designer and is about much more than making the words legible and readable. It is considered to have begun with Gutenberg and the development of moveable type. But typography has its roots in handwritten letterforms. Typography encompasses everything from calligraphy through digital type and type on Web pages. It also includes type designers who create new letterforms as well as designers and calligraphers who use the letters as part of their designs.
History
How it started
The first type of messages that we find in the history records were a series of pictures that told a story known as pictographs. From pictographs created more sophisticated ways of communicating through ideographs. Ideographs substituted symbols for pictures of events. A symbol of a star represented the heavens or a peace pipe represented peace. Native Americans and Egyptians are examples of some folks who used ideographs. Chinese characters are still based on ideographs.
egyptian hieroglyphics
From ideographs the egyptians devoloped a more pioneering illustration system called Hieroglypics. The Egyptians still used drawings to represent objects or ideas, but were the first to use objects to represent sounds.
Letter Development
At around 1200 BC, the Phoenicians declare their independence from the Egyptians and developed their own alphabet that was the first to be composed exclusively of letters.
The Greeks adopted the Phoenician language and began to expand the true beginni...

...t trend is going to continue into 2014, and many designers are going to favor sites that promote function over form, and place a clear emphasis on simplicity, minimalist and intelligibility. With that continued emphasis on flat design comes the trend of choosing fonts that are easy to read, use clean lines, and even strokes. The fonts that will become popular due to flat design are ones that are share and crisp – but still visually interesting.
Large Type
Based on the research large type in 2014, will be a new trend. Web designers in particular will definately use this type to grab viewers attention. Falling in line with the emphasis on content over aesthetic, increasing the font size on webpages ensures that the text is clear, readable and comprehensible. Because of increased screen resolutions, the standard 12 point font is no longer as readable as it was before.
Cuneiform was the first ever form of writing. The Sumerians were the main inventors of this writing. The symbol as we know them now consist of lines and wedges. One of the
Another form of art that the Egyptians used back then was painting. The Wooden Chest of Tutankhamun is a great example. Again,
By being educated at a young age in literacy, I included it in my pottery and also working for newspaper companies strengthened my form of expression. Working in the South Carolina Republican and then later on The Edgefield Hive as a typesetter, it was a good experience helping my literacy skills but I didn’t feel fully indulged. I did it because I had to but also to learn. By understand typography, I was able to understand the science of the anatomy of type. They taught me the use of size, spacing, and placement of typography in order to show hierarchy, direction and attraction. I became to understanding that type is a collective of shapes and strokes. Master Abner 's newspaper did not get a lot of publicity and hit a crisis, which led him to cease publication of the newspapers. Master Abner then moved to Columbia, South Carolina, in 1832. He decided to leave me back in Edgefield and...

Like the Mesopotamians, the Egyptians also believed in god and goddesses and was one of the first to develop their unique writing system called hieroglyphics. Egyptian’s also were the first to construct triangular pyramids with magnificent tombs to bury their dead pharaohs and queens. These pyramids were very comparable to the ziggurats built by the Mesopotamians. The Egyptians unlocked more access when they started using papyrus to make paper in order to communicate. They also inven...

They cannot be changed too much because of the decreasing of the legibility. However, typographers always had enough freedom for their experiments with typefaces. Another McCarthy’s statement was that the text’s design is as important as its sense. The typographer can decrease or increase its readability with the aid of usage of capital letters, font’s size, color, align and other features. Words’ background and location also plays an important role.
The first symbol pictures "gal," or "great," and the second pictures "lu," or "man." Eventually, this pictorial writing developed into a more abstract series of wedges and hooks. These wedges and hooks are the original cuneiform and represented in Sumerian entire words (this is called ideographic and the word symbols are called ideograms, which means "concept writing"); the Semites who adopted this writing, however, spoke an entirely different language, in fact, a language as different from Sumerian as English is different from Japanese. In order to adapt this foreign writing to a Semitic language, the Akkadians converted it in part to a syllabic writing system; individual signs represent entire syllables. However, in addition to syllable symbols, some cuneiform symbols are ideograms ("picture words") representing an entire word; these ideograms might also, in other contexts, be simply syllables. For instance, in Assyrian, the cuneiform for the syllable "ki" is written.
These messages from the very beginning offered new, unique views and ideas upon existing scenarios. Ancient authors who had witnessed and read such symbols got their own ideas and developed their own style of writing and stories. This is has happened throughout history and is most prevalent in today’s society.
The culture of Ancient Egypt is identified and very well known for many aspects of their ways of life. Considering the time period, they were very technologically advanced. This can especially be seen through the great pyramids and hieroglyphs that elaborately decorate the walls of them. Pyramids were not small structures. In fact the largest one was over fifty stories high. In addition they were also built completely by manual labor. Labor consisted of moving limestone blocks that weighed on average 2.5 metric tons and could weigh up to 15 metric tons. In addition they had to form these blocks, move them, and sculpt them into the great structures known as the Pyramids. As you can imagine they took several decades of day in and day out work to complete these massive structures. The hieroglyphs were also an important part of not only the Ancient Egyptian culture but the pyramids especially. They provided pictorial descriptions for burial chambers, temples, jewelry, and important statues. Ways to decipher them were unknown until the discovery of what is known as the Rosetta Stone. It was a stone that showed the same text in three different languages. Then early in the 19th century a French scholar name Jean Francois Champollion was able to decipher it and later on aid in learning the language of the dead language of hieroglyphs. Hieroglyphs are still being deciphered to this day.
Humans have been using written language to communicate ideas with one another since as early as 3200 BCE in Mesopotamia. Since then, every great civilization has had a written language, each with its own unique characteristics. However, it was the writin...
The Egyptians saw hieroglyphic writing as a way to communicate between themselves and their gods. Because of this, hieroglyphs were written in temples and anywhere connected to the gods or the afterlife, such as in tombs and cemeteries. The
These kinds of tokens were used as far back as 10,000 BCE. 2. The earliest writing was in the form of pictograms, where pictures represented objects and numerals, represented by about 1,200 symbols. Cuneiform developed from these early pictograms (see chart). The earliest writing did not fully represent all of the intricacies of language and there were few grammatical aspects.
He supposed that type should first of all convey sense of a text in “the shortest, most efficient manner” and was one of the pioneers of philosophy that typography should be pure and functional. Despite this it could not be said that type should be completely transparent. According to R. Jacobson ‘Too strucrured design is not nescessary build a good communication.’ (1966) Designer is like a traslator and performer, that make text apprehensible and reading process interesting. Nowadays, modernists ideas are not responses for the needs of contemporary society.
Ancient Egyptian literature is believed to be the earliest written works known. Egyptians were the first to develop literary devices and religious texts. Also, they were the first to create their version of paper and ink. Hieroglyphs, a writing system used by ancient Egyptians, inspired the original alphabet, including the Romans (Budge 1).
