PUBLIC HEALTH COMMITTEE:
The Public Health Committee is accountable for providing tripper education and training regarding global health ethics, cultural competence, and what to expect in each country we visit. Additionally, the Public Health Committee is responsible for all of our public health projects that are carried out on our trips, including water filter installation, health education presentations, conducting needs assessments in communities, and more. The Public Health Committee is an essential part of GMT's work, on account that it works to further the sustainability, need-specificity, and efficacy of our work as a whole and the impact we have on other communities. What will you hope to accomplish as part of the committee this year?
I have experience in teaching and lecturing on public health and medical topics. Furthermore, I served as a department/teaching coordinator for COPE Heath scholars at Kaiser Permanente in Riverside. The role me and my team played, was overseeing and educating over 60 students, every 3 months on a variety of topics. Including topics such as preventive medicine, cultural competence, diversity, diet and exercise.
I hope to further my education and knowledge, and teach trippers about the various ways we can better equip the communities we visit, so that they can be able to progress and thrive on their own. Moreover, each country has its own cultures and norms, and teaching the trippers these cultural differences, will help avoid many conflicts, wrong impressions and assumptions that may arise during the trip.
Describe a particular issue in global health and how you see GMT's role in addressing/improving upon this issue?
Communicable diseases pose a major threat in most developing countries. Many patients suffering from communicable diseases, don’t realize that they are passing it down to their partners, families and loved ones. They lack the knowledge necessary to prevent such diseases from
