PUBLIC HEALTH COMMITTEE:
The Public Health Committee is accountable for providing tripper education and training regarding global health ethics, cultural competence, and what to expect in each country we visit. Additionally, the Public Health Committee is responsible for all of our public health projects that are carried out on our trips, including water filter installation, health education presentations, conducting needs assessments in communities, and more. The Public Health Committee is an essential part of GMT's work, on account that it works to further the sustainability, need-specificity, and efficacy of our work as a whole and the impact we have on other communities. What will you hope to accomplish as part of the committee this year?
I have experience in teaching and lecturing on public health and medical topics. Furthermore, I served as a department/teaching coordinator for COPE Heath scholars at Kaiser Permanente in Riverside. The role me and my team played, was overseeing and educating over 60 students, every 3 months on a variety of topics. Including topics such as preventive medicine, cultural competence, diversity, diet and exercise.
I hope to further my education and knowledge, and teach trippers about the various ways we can better equip the communities we visit, so that they can be able to progress and thrive on their own. Moreover, each country has its own cultures and norms, and teaching the trippers these cultural differences, will help avoid many conflicts, wrong impressions and assumptions that may arise during the trip.
Describe a particular issue in global health and how you see GMT's role in addressing/improving upon this issue?

The term “public/community health” often brings to mind sparkling clear clean water and fresh clean air. The reason for that mental image is that both are required in order for one to have good public/community health. In actuality, the term “Public Health” has been defined as “the protection and improvement of the health of the public through community action, primarily by governmental agencies” (Public Health, 2016). However, public health includes any and all actions taken to maintain and improve the general health of a community. Government health programs provide most of the public health services. In addition, many voluntary health agencies receive contributions to battle specific diseases, such as HIV and cancer. These agencies not only provide medical services, they campaign for health legislation, and make important contributions to health education. Healthcare is intriguing. The health and wellness of people always has been intriguing and always will be. My background in healthcare came as an environmental pass down with a father as a Registered Nurse and a mother in healthcare management. It was inevitable that the journey of healthcare started being instilled without my knowledge of it, as a young child. A constant learning in the health sciences and management directed my way. By the start of college, the intrigue lead to compassion, lighting a fire for the administration of healthcare. This calling spurred by a great woman, my mother, who is a national redesign award winner by the Bureau of Primary Healthcare in Health Disparities. These footsteps down her similar path with careful guidance, but not to be confused with an easy path.
The purpose of this essay is to evaluate the changing role of public health. Wanless (2004) defines public health as ‘prolonging life and promoting health through the organised efforts and informed choices of society, organisations, communities and individuals’. The focus of health promotion is to reduced health inequalities with the main concept being protecting the public from transmissible diseases, improving services and to help the health of the population. Scriven, A (2010) suggests that it is vital to measure health when promoting health to identify priorities, assist with planning, identify resources needed and to assist the development of the health professional.
The overall goal for this assessment is to enable a sharing information through collaboration among community partners to promote a healthy communities where people live, work, and play. The steps to complete one is for clinic, hospital, and local health departments to all keep a record of the health status of their patients. Then without exposing the patient’s medical record/personal information just give an overall rating/occurrence of the health issue(s). It is important to conduct them because it is important to know the cause of health issues, the number of times that it is occurring, the age and race group the health issue occurs the most in, and the environmental risk factor that contributes to the disease, One of the case study topic is Sharma’s Village. The theme for National Public Health Week 2015 is, ‘‘together we can create the healthiest nation in one generation.’’ National Public Health Week occurs in the first full week of April each year, and it is a time that us as students and health care workers should show our community what public health is really all about. Health care workers can show improvements in technology, current safety measures and major changes in the delivery of our health care system. A key component of public health is that it is always changing with the advent of new technologies. So many discoveries and initiatives have helped improve persons’ environments; inversely, there are threats such as climate change and diseases that progress from endemic to epidemic, presenting daunting challenges to even the most experienced of health professionals. Whether the issue regards sickle cell disease or smoking cessation, everything has some association to one another in the sense I can apply the skills I have learned to combat the barriers that impede one’s quality of life. My time studying public health as an undergrad as well my two years as a public health professional has opened a lot of opportunities for me to succeed in life; both academically and professionally, the various disciplines of public health have changed my perspectives and helped influence me to make a difference for the betterment of those around me. Preventing diseases is every countries’ responsibility, whether they are poor or rich. Poor countries lack the knowledge and the money to gain, and expand medical resources. Therefore, many people are not been able to be cured. For wealthy countries, diseases are mutating at incredible speeds. Patients are dying because drug companies do not have enough data to produce vaccines to cure patients. When developed countries help poor countries to cure their people, the developed countries could help underdeveloped countries. Since developed countries can provide greater medical resources to poor countries, people living in the poor countries could be cured.
