Being healthy requires a combination of factors, which over time, shape and affect the life of a human. One of these factors include nutrition. Food provides our bodies with the energy, protein and vitamins to live, grow and function accordingly. However, people have a difficult time choosing the right foods to eat, jeopardizing their health. To diminish this rising issue, public health nurses promote proper nutrition to the population.

To accomplish this in an efficient way, health promotion is targeted towards the population, through building social interventions, such as promoting proper eating habits. Health promotion does not focus on the negative influences on health. Instead, it aims to enhance the level of well-being through a safe environment, to prevent disease (Potter, 2010). These items are oftentimes products filled with preservatives and trans fats. 9,380 fifth graders were asked how often they ate healthy food per week. Nearly half of the children reported no consumption of nutritious food during the past week (Datar, 2013). Canadians typically consume high fat foods with lower nutritional quality, creating a rising rate of obesity in children (Potter 2010).
There are quick and simple interventions to decrease this issue. Throughout the United States, concern of rising health issues is a popular topic. Over a progression of many years, American fast food chains and junk food companies have risen as a common means for food replacing homemade family meals. This quick and easy habit of buying cheaply made and sold foods that lack real nutritional value has been reason for increasing health issues. This habit is seen in children just the same as adults. Children eat the quickest meal with the most sugar and fat (among other unhealthy ingredients). This habit needs to be broken to take better care of the children today. Children are eating snack cakes and other junk foods at school instead of the breakfast/lunch that is offered causing bad habits and a poor diet. The children of America are suffering from the effects of malnutrition and yet, society does not help them to better understand or give higher grade options for them to choose from. Therefore, junk food should not be allowed in schools as it imposes health risks on children, lacks requirements for the nutrition contained in them, and without offering them, children would learn many morals/lessons.

Many cafeteria workers and staff members in 49 states have said many students do not want the governments new school lunches. Almost 7 out of 17 schools with have been seen with students throwing away some or all their fruits or vegetables, even the cafeteria workers are suffering under these new standards. About 60.3 percent of school districts want flexibility to be given to all schools to improve their ability to provide and give good nutrition without harm to any instructions and school district operations. To conclude, unhealthy foods in the cafeteria and the vending machines are the worst examples for the kids to maintain the healthy eating habits. Us Parents have to step in to make changes for our kids because in doing so would determine what kind of foods our kids are consuming. We do know for facts they are not getting the proper nutrients while in school, although they do spend in average of eight to 12 hours in schools. We, the parents, can start to make a difference, by attending the school meetings and being active in our kids functions in schools.
