Pakistan is a developing country and it needs to tap into its natural resources to get the best results economically. Energy crisis is a time and money sucking problem that Pakistan is going through. Lahore's population has increased from 7-8 million to 10 million in the last 8 years as analyzed by Pakistan Statistical Bureau. Dumping of solid wastes, that is; rubber, plastic and glass is a common phenomenon in this city. There are hundreds and hundreds of scavengers and junk-shops. This causes a considerable depletion of the natural resources, stops creating new jobs and opportunities and hence pulls the legs of economic development backwards. A well prepared recycling program, can make sure that natural resources are readily available to the generations to come and Earth is environment friendly, as it was once. Plastics are the most common waste product that destroys the nature. Plastics, if once made, cannot be destroyed. They are non-biodegradable. If plastics are set on fire, they release carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and other poisonous toxic fumes, and still carbon is left. So the best way, to utilize this is to recycle it and use it again and again, rather than producing more.

According the Pakistan statistical bureau, only 20 to 25% of Lahore's recyclable products are actually being recycled. This small amount contributes around 6 million US dollar per year through the unofficial sector. If the formal sector is taken into account and they do the same, and if 90 to 95% of the waste is being recycled, it would save 1 to 1.5 million on collection and would bring in 30 to 35 million US dollar annually. This is because, as mentioned earlier that Pakistan is a developing and struggling country, illiteracy is a common thing, people here are worried about the three meals of the day, so how can they worry about Pakistan being environment friendly. Huge campaign awareness is a way to go about it. This is the reason, targeting upper class and elites is the right direction to go. People who are literate and educated and who know the importance of this. As, recycling is still not an established industry in Pakistan, it would be very hard to establish a new market and an industry and help people in understanding that this can really make a difference, both economically and environmentally.
