Abdi Omar: The person who is angry at China for refusing to take our waste anymore. They have created a global problem yet are the world’s largest manufacturer of goods.

Imagine if we had to pay more tax so our waste could be recycled and some of it would just end up in landfill polluting the environment anyway? The world’s recycling system could collapse because of China’s ban on importing some waste. China had been processing at least half of the world’s exports of waste paper, metals and used plastic — 7.3 million tons in 2016, according to recent industry data. In many countries it is costing enormous amount of public funds to remove the build-up of recyclables with nowhere to go. Victorians could be faced with rate rises as waste companies start to feel the impacts of China’s ban on the import of foreign waste. This is ridiculous, as an Australian, why should we have to pay even more taxes? Part of the world, such as members of the EU and some states of Australia, also plan to propose a tax on plastic bags and packaging because of China’s decision. As a result of China’s new policy, recycling “could end up costing the householder more money,” hazardous materials expert Dr Trevor Thornton said. “If councils stop taking the material in the recycling bin it will go to landfill which will cost us more and councils will have no choice but to pass it on to us.” Many recycling companies now plan to charge councils a fee to take recyclable waste. According to the government, every year Australia produces about 64 million tonnes of waste, or about 2.7 tonnes per person, but only about 60% of that is recycled in some form. Moreover, Australia exported tons of recyclables to China every year. This shows us that Australia’s recycling system is really dependent on China. The price of recycling of mixed paper scrap has dropped nearly 100%, scrap mixed plastic has fallen to 76%, and cardboard is also falling down to 40% per ton, according to the Market Impact Assessment Report. All these prices have fallen and dropped by China’s new policy and we could waste a lot of money.
