Marie Montessori was a Italian physician and an educator who was best known for philosophy of education that bears her name, Montessori education (Maria Montessori, Wikipedia). She was born on August 31, 1870 in Chiaravalle, Italy. She went to the University of Rome, Medical School. Her intension when going to the University of Rome- Medical School was to study medicine. She enrolled in a degree course in natural sciences, passing examinations in botany, zoology, experimental physics, histology, anatomy, and general and organic chemistry, and earning her diploma di licenza in 1892. Diploma di licenza means License Diploma (dictionary.com). From 1896 to 1901 Maria Montessori worked with and researched so-called "parenthetic" children, also known as children experiencing some form of intellectual disability, or illness. She was a great student and was always willing to learn but the education she desired was not available in Poland so when her sister, Bronya, went to Paris, Marie followed. Marie went to school in Paris to get a teaching diploma in mathematics and physics and then to return to Poland. She didn’t live with her sister and new brother-in-law because she liked the freedom she had in an apartment of her own. After 3 years of living in Paris, she received a diploma in physics and mathematics.
The Montessori method began in the early 1900's by the first female doctor in Italy, Dr. Mary Montessori, as a way of educating mentally disabled children. Introduction: Maria Montessori’s Theory on Education is a sensory-based pedagogy that is based on the belief that children learn at their own pace, passing through particular developmental stages at certain ages birth-six years, six-nine years and nine-twelve years also known as Sensitive Periods (Standing 1998, Montessori Sensitive Periods). These Sensitive Periods are times or stages in a child’s development where they are more responsive to certain stimuli, increasing knowledge to develop particular skills (Standing 1998, Montessori Sensitive Periods). Through my research of the literature on Montessori’s teaching styles I began to notice they require a sensory rich environment that offers interactive yet independent learning opportunities for the children to freely discover and make sense of new information through reflection, imagination and interaction while passing through these three developmental stages of Absorbent Minds, Reasoning Minds and Moral Development.
In Maria Montessori’s writing Dr. Montessori’s Own Handbook she uses an interesting choice of words and phrases as well as allusions to convey her belief that children should have freedom and be shown respect. Montessori uses allusions, or references, from famous works, to push her agenda. The main allusion of the text is that of the Bible, such as that of Luke 6:31 and Mathew 19:14. She uses these verses when mentioning that we should treat kids with just as much respect as we give adults.

Because Ms. Diaz has had this specific student for the second year she understands that he functions better in his seat than he does on the rug. In 1891 Maria went to Paris, while in Paris Marie attend Sorbonne University and began to follow lectures of many already well known physicists--Jean Perrin, Charles Maurain, and Aime' Cotton. It was during this time that Marie finally turned towards mathematics and physics. Within three years of attending Sorbonne Marie was already on her way to becoming the most well recognized women in science. Marie was the ideal example of hard work. Receiving her degree in physics from the Sorbonne in 1893, she was not only the first woman to receive such a degree but she graduated number one in her class.
