Abstract - Interest in the application of lean thinking, its implementation has been growing significantly in the last few years. The main intent of this paper is to study about lean and its need in health care industry. The next section of the paper focuses about the implementation principles that an organization should adopt and can incorporate. Subsequently various benefits and application areas of lean health care are also discussed as a part of this paper. Our paper also focuses on the five lean implementation techniques that can be adopted by any healthcare organizations to improve the care processes. Key terms: DART, Lean in health, Non-value added, VMCC, VMPS 1. INTRODUCTION Lean was initially developed and implemented in Toyota production …show more content…
– Mark Graban, Lean Hospitals: Improving Quality, Patient Safety, and Employee Satisfaction. According to Dahlgaard et al., There is a need to develop a maximum value to the patients by focusing on their needs, addressing their concerns by employee involvement and continuous improvement to provide a quality treatment to the patients [5]. Lean uses a set of methods and philosophies by reducing waste and waits. So this can improve the flow of patients and, information or goods. The waste in the health care industry refers to the interruptions, delays, mistakes, and waiting time of the patient to consult a doctor or receive treatment, excess staff etc. Thus implementing lean in health care industries provides an effective way in every aspect of health care organizations. Table 1 given below briefly summarizes about the ten concepts of implementation principles in the reviewed papers of health care. Table I Functional Implementation Principles [10] [7] S.no Implementation Principles 1. Lean provides values to customers they actually desire. 2. Identify the value stream and eliminate waste. 3. Line up the remaining steps to create continuous flow 4. Pull production based on customers 5. Start over in a pursuit of perfection ‘the happy situation of perfect value provided with zero waste. 6. Lean is an attitude of continuous improvement 7. Lean is unity of purpose 8. Lean is respect …show more content…
Strong commitment and inspiring leadership from senior leaders is essential to the success of an effort this challenging [2]. The CEO must be a vocal, visible champion of lean management, create an environment where it is permissible to fail, set stretch goals, and encourage “leaps of faith” [2]. Top management plays a crucial role in success of lean implementation. So, leadership can be stated as a critical aspect for lean implementation. It can be also viewed that organization can get success only if it comprises of healthy culture, skilled workers, and strong leadership
...anization. Lastly, the knowledge needs to be communicated to all employees including tools, resources, and problem-solving throughout the entire organization. Managing these critical factors will place any organization with a Lean Six Sigma system in the right direction.
Achieving quality of conformance involved conform to specifications that involve providing customers with a quality product at the right price which accounts for the cost of materials. In order for a company to achieve and produce a successful product that customers want and need, it is vital that quality management and lean systems play front row. Quality management helps organizations to reduce waste and inventory. “Lean is about challenging the way things are done and opening our eyes to that waste and inefficiency” (Lean Benefits - Benefits of Lean, Why Lean is Important, 2015). Within each of these concepts are important tool and techniques that organizations can use to achieve a quality product. In this paper I will discuss “cost of quality” from the quality management side and “kaizen’s” from the lean system side, while discussing how each of these concepts are implemented into my own life or
Over the past few years, the health care service has seen many changes. The Affordable Care Act, for example, creating more insurance in order to care for the indigent and people in the most need of help. Health care is a very essential and necessary element of an individuals lives. The methods and preparation that is needed in order to provide adequate and efficient patient care to all is very critical and sometimes specific. The health care organization has ventured from focusing on input management to focusing and improving output management (White, 2011).
Lean is not a new concept and surfaced as a result of Toyota’s Production System. Manufacturing has been using lean principles since the 1980’s (Sarkar, 2008). Lean today goes beyond manufacturing into health, education,
The company that the author has chosen to compare his own organization with is the Toyota motor company. The Toyota Company has become a renowned leader in the area of quality management. Toyota’s theory of “keep it lean” has kept the company running at a level that eclipses the industry standards.
A LEAN Company is our best description and our business philosophy (creating more value for customers with less resources), which pursues to deliver what the customer wants, when they want it, at maximum value with minimum misuse.Through the application of LEAN, we achieve more fulfillment as it helps to reduce the possibility to constantly be fighting a battle against difficulties. Besides, we promote a Continuous Improvement Culture in our performance.
Since Lean is a continuous improvement approach, a critical difference between the 2 systems was that the Lean approach instilled smaller teams of workers instead of a larger bunch. Even with smaller team, to ensure that there is not a sense of creeping boredom, the members were to switch jobs. This ensured that a person was

According to Christopher and Towill (2001), there are mainly three ways to combine lean and leagile. The first hybrid approach is the Pareto rule, which means that the dominant 20% of products should use leanness and make to stock. While the remaining 80% products with less share of revenue should use agility. The second hybrid approach is about using lean approach for the base level of demand, while for the peak season or flexible demand, manufacturer can use agility
The LEAN principles are based upon the Toyota care company model that centers on effective change, improving quality, and efficiency without wasting resources such as time and money (Lawal et al., 2014). LEAN in healthcare is creating the perspective of teamwork for a common goal, continually improving quality of care, and usefulness by weighing the benefits versus the costs, following visual information such as idea mapping, respecting others, and being flexible (D’Andreamatteo, Ianni, Lega, & Sargiacomo,
For organizations who have committed to invest and deploy quality systems improvement programs, it is a huge task for every member who is a part of the transformation. The benefits are felt once completed and outweigh the cost from a long-term standpoint. Col. Larsen offers a compelling argument that Lean principles, when properly applied, also result in significant improvement and transcends industry boundaries. Leadership from all levels must challenge traditional approaches, communicate, and execute as a team to design and obtain excellence in governance of safety.
The Transformational Approach to Healthcare As healthcare professionals realized that there is no fixed approach to implementing healthcare due to patient diversity and resource limitations, the transformational model was brought to surface. It has been used as a guidance point for professionals seeking to improve their services by collectively responding to rapid change across healthcare. Instead of adjusting the process and technique of services, organizational benchmarks are set in place to advocate widespread organizational improvement. Management lies within the professional at every level.
Lean startup method helps entrepreneurs to develop businesses and products. This method first developed by Eric Ries in 2008. Eric Ries gained a lot of experience in U.S. startups before developing the Lean Startup method. Ries states that: '' Startups shorten their product development cycle by following businesss hypothesis driven experimentation, repetitive product unleashes and validated learning processes. This method prioritize customers and their needs in order to minimize market risks and some initial costs.

She notes that different healthcare units need different approaches. She explained further that lean is a new way of thinking and working but not a one-time change of work processes. She also stressed that it is difficult to take ideas from one culture and apply them to another, especially if these ideas involve people, behaviours, practices and ways of thinking which is in the case of lean. She stressed further that the best implementation strategy is an approach with more focus on finding ways that are consistent with the specific conditions and suit a healthcare culture.
