Habits of mind refer to ways of approaching learning that are both intellectual and practical and that will support students’ success in a variety of fields and disciplines. They are coping strategies that deal with problems one may face relating to schooling, which were developed to understand how students could best approach any problem they might encounter. Habits of mind involves more than skillful and persistent problem solving, in fact it involves knowing how to implement clusters of behaviors to manage difficult situations. American educational reformer Horace Mann once observed that “habit is a cable; we weave a thread of it each day, and at last we cannot break it.” The intent is to help students get into the habit of behaving intelligently. When one draw upon these intellectual resources, the results are more powerful and of greater significance than if he or she fail to engage in such patterns of knowledgeable behavior. One of the many habits includes openness, which is the willingness to consider new ways of being and thinking in the world. Openness is fostered when people are encouraged to examine their own perspectives to find connections with the perspectives of others, as well as practice different ways of gathering, investigating, developing, and presenting information. It’s not easily achieved and is somewhat like a muscle, in that one has to build it up over time through intellectual work and hardship. The beauty of openness is that it allows one to find out so many new things and soak in so many new perspectives. It’s not always an easy thing to do, but the effort to think openly and embrace new ideas are worth it when opportunities and benefits come from opening the mind. Whether they are positive or negative, our habits are an integral part of our lives. Because of this, when Professor James VanderMey addressed the 33rd annual Honors Convocation at Mid Michigan Community College, he decided to speak on the topic of habit. In his speech, entitled “Remarks on Habit,” VanderMey (argues against Sartre’s point of view by) discusses the advantages of having good habits, especially the habits represented by the Diploma Qualification Profile, a series of proficiencies that students learn as they are educated at Mid Michigan Community College. First, he shows that good habits lead to creative problem solving. Then, he argues that our habits make us who we are. Finally, he shows how good habits may grow and multiply. Habits, especially DQP habits, are positive and useful, because they allow one to think creatively, become a better person, and find innovative ways of doing.
Both were given a workshop with skills on how to study, but one was also given lessons on what a growth mindset was and how to develop one. The group given the lessons on growth mindset was extremely fascinated by the thought that they could control how much knowledge they were capable of learning. Overall, the growth mindset group excelled while the control group continued to not do so well. After receiving these results, Dweck was so inspired that she developed a growth mindset computer program called “Brainology,” that would be available to students all around the world. In The article “Brainology” “Carol S Dweck, a professor of psychology at Stanford University, differentiates between having a fixed and growth mindset in addition how these mindsets have a deep effect on a student’s desire to learn. Individuals who have a fixed mindset believe they are smart without putting in effort and are afraid of obstacles, lack motivation, and their focus is to appear smart.. In contrast, students with a growth mindset learn by facing obstacles and are motivated to learn. Dwecks argues that students should develop a growth mindset. Students who have a growth mindset learn by facing obstacle because they see them as a way of learning.
In the Brainology article, professor Carol Dweck put forward two mindsets: fixed mindset and growth mindset. That is an educational project that was instituted by Carol Dweck and made her famous for. That is talking about transforming student’s motivation to learn found out that people have fixed mindset or growth mindset all have profound effects on their motivation, learning and school achievement. To begin, the Big-Five traits of the Five Factor Model of Personality are each unique in their own way and offer hints or clues into an individual’s personality. The Big-Five traits can be easily remembered by using the acronym O.C.E.A.N. O represents the trait openness, C represents conscientiousness, E represents extraversion, A represents agreeableness, and last, but not least, N represents neuroticism. Openness is a trait that is characterized by a multitude of positive components. For example, individuals who score high in the trait openness often tend to be imaginative, creative, intelligent, broad-minded, and curious. They are likely to be more motivated, and they enjoy pursuing diverse and new experiences. Individuals high in openness are also more likely to be proactive meaning they actively seek more challenging and complex opportunities (Choi, Colbert, & Oh, 2015). Low scorers of openness are more practical, conventional, narrow-minded, and tend to avoid new experiences. Simply stated, if one starts out developing a positive habit, it will become part of who that person is, however; if they do not develop good habits, and then they will never succeed in life.

Not everyone can achieve a strong habit of mind, in fact most don’t. The habit is a way of thinking that allows one to communicate with knowledge when the answer is not initially apparent. In order to think in this complex manner a person has to be well educated in all subjects of intelligence. Having a good education goes hand in hand with having good habits of mind, because in order to have positive functioning habits, a person has to be well rounded enough to considered every possible solution to the problems or questions posed. Being able to use a habit of mind also requires a type of thinking where others nor any outside force constrains any ideas or solutions . This by definition is a habit of mind.

Mindfulness is an ideal that has been present for thousands of years (positivepsychologyprogram.com). It has roots in almost every major religion: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and most renown, Buddhism and Hinduism (positivepsychologyprogram.com). Psychology Today defines mindfulness as “a state of active, open attention on the present.” Dr. Shauna Shapiro during a TEDx Talk defines mindfulness as “intentionally paying attention with kindness” (Shapiro, S., 2017). Mindfulness has many principles involved with it, but the short version is to be aware. It is to be aware of the present moment deliberately. Jon Kabat-Zinn, considered the father of the western movement for mindfulness by some, defines mindfulness as, “Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; On purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally” (Bodhipaksa, 2007). We, as humans, get caught up in the business of life; so, we need to stay oriented to the present. Another way to describe this is “acting with awareness rather than on ‘automatic autopilot’” (Caldwell, et al, 2010). Mindfulness is non-judgmental about life. The terms mindfulness and presence are often used interchangeably within the mental health field; however, without mindfulness the ability to be present may be null and void. Even though there are several references to mindfulness within research and literature (Bien, 2006; Cole & Ladas-Gaskin, 2007; Germer, 2005; Germer, Siegel, & Fulton, 2005; Hick, 2008; Linehan, 1993a, 1993b; Mace, 2008; McKay, Brantley, & Wood, 2007; Shapiro & Carlson, 2009), the expansive use of the term can lose its meaning. Originally based in Buddhist philosophy, mindfulness has been adapted by Western society and more specifically, within the counseling field. A particular individual, however, may have a high overall openness score and be interested in learning and exploring new cultures but have no great interest in art or poetry.
When it comes to openness, I’m more practical, traditional, and most comfortable in familiar surroundings. I tend to focus more on things that are more concrete and straightforward rather than abstract. People who score low in openness tend to have more conservative political views and enjoy mainstream entertainment rather than going to the opera or ballet. I fall into both of those, I vote conservatively, and I would much rather listen to pop music and see a movie rather than an opera. I do understand the importance of art though and enjoy some things that people who score lower in openness don’t. I don’t consider myself to be completely conservative, as I lean more liberal on some issues. Another characteristic of openness I don’t feel like I completely fall into is not enjoying arts. I appreciate art, and enjoy going to art museums and theater performances. So, while I don’t score highest in this, I don’t believe that I am not at all open to experience. Lastly, I score low in agreeableness. Those who score low in this tend to put their own needs and interests in front of others. While, I don’t think I’m completely untrusting of others and selfish, I do tend to show those traits sometimes. I am selfish when it comes to people I’m not close to, and I think this stems from me not being open and comfortable around new people. I think I can tie in my insecurity and being more reserved into why I am like this. When I meet a person, I don’t automatically trust that they are good and nice, it takes time for me to get to know them and make sure that they are. I am untrusting and selfish, but only at the beginning of my relationships. I don’t think these are necessarily negative traits to possess, I believe that if you’re trusting of everyone and completely self-less you’ll be taken advantage of. Although you shouldn’t be completely trusting of every single person you meet I also don’t believe
A habit can be many things, some good, some not so good. Everyone has habits that they would like to change and maybe improve upon. I believe the majority of habits I have are good ones but some are not. These bad habits are the ones I will talk about.
