Evidence Based Practice in the Nursing Field. The meaning of evidence based practice is that we are using the best available evidence to help guide patient care (Blais & Hayes, 2016). As nurses we examine everyday practices and look for the most accurate information proving that this is the most effective technique of doing things. As nurses we often do things since we were told that this was how to do it, but why we do it a certain way is often based on a proven evidence based practice. I read an article from Applied Nursing Research and in this article they talked to different types of nurses and asked what they thought evidence based practice was and one nurse applicant from a general internal medicine area said that it is centered on scholarly research of what has been effective not just what worked best last time (Jeffs, et al., 2013). There are two types of methods in research they are quantitative and qualitative and they can be combined. Quantitative research is very concise and based on statistical data and can show where the problem originated and the outcome. The quantitative research is considered a hard science it looks at measurable aspects of the human experience (Blais & Hayes, 2016). A controlled study can be considered quantitative research. Qualitative research is based on perspectives. It can vary with nurse to nurse. It is more descriptive than the quantitative research. It is more biased data and does not show where the problem originates or the conclusion of a specific study. According to Blais and Hayes (2016) qualitative research “allows exploration of the subjective experiences of human beings and can provide nursing with a better understanding of phenomena from the client’s perspective” (pg.197).
