When I first started this class, I was much more closed minded and stuck in my own ways. As the year comes to an end a lot of things have changed and the way I look at how to best live life has also changed. Ethics is understood to be thinking hard about morality. A branch of philosophy that seeks to understand how best to live a human life (Quizlet). The best way to live life in my opinion is based on two things. The moral foundations theory and the four families of moral values. If a person truly understands the six moral foundations; care/harm, liberty/oppression, fairness/cheating, loyalty/betrayal, authority/subversion, and the sanctity/degradation they should be better able to live the best life possible. I’ve made the most progress in skills because as a student in this ethics class I think I am vey responsible, have integrity, and have interpersonal respect. I am a very responsible student I get all my work done on time and make sure it is done to the best of my ability. In every homework, exam, project, and in class work I make sure to do honest work at all times. I also think I demonstrate an understanding of the readings and strong writing skills. Before every class I make sure to read to readings assigned and make sure to understand them. Although I may not be the strongest grammatical writer, I do think I portray strong writing skills on the topic at hand. I think I made the least progress in knowledge. I am not as strong in being able to understand and identify moral questions and values through examining case studies. Although I read all the reading assignments sometimes Im not able to understand and connect real life situations with what I am reading. I am not always able to understand who the stakeholders are without help from others. I am able to identify three of the five primary ethical approaches, but not without refreshing my memory. I am also not as good at naming the background of ethical values. Although I understand what ethics is and what ethics it entails, sometimes I can not always remember the knowledge I learned and need to do a better job of refreshing my memory and keeping up on the knowledge I already
Richard Kyte starts out his book An Ethical Life by saying “To engage in ethics is to engage in a particular type of human activity, one that involves thinking and talking about how we should act—what we should do, say, think, or even feel in certain situations.” Kyte also states that ethics is not easy, simple or straightforward in any situation. Furthermore, ethics can vary based on your perception of what is true and what is just. So, what is ethics exactly? What is my understanding of ethics? Where did I get this tool box of values, morals, ethical understandings and virtues?
The issues of nursing burnout and compassion fatigue are an important one in part, because of the ongoing nursing shortage across the united states. Per the American colleges of nursing “the U.S. is projected to experience a shortage of Registered Nurses (RN’s) that is expected to intensify as Baby Boomers age and the need for health care grows” (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2017). One of the most serious issues in nursing, that can affect a nurses career is nursing burn- out. According to the article “Where have all the nurses gone”, current nurses that are practicing, report high rates of job dissatisfaction (which is part of burn out) and 1 of 5 nurses may quit nursing in the next 5 years (Dworkin, 2002). Burnout is associated with nurses not coming in to work, not feeling satisfied when doing their job, high turnover rates and a lack of commitment to the work (Katisfaraki, 2013). If a nurse becomes burned- out, they may not take care of their patients as well and could make mistakes with medication administration. A study performed in the United States by Dr. Jeannie Cimiottti, shows that hospitals with high burn-out rates among nurses have higher levels UTI’s, and surgical infections (World, 2012). Nursing burnout not only affects the nurse, but it also affects the patient, the nurses’ colleagues, and the nurses’ family; nursing burn out often leads to emotional exhaustion and depression, that can effect relations and communication between the nurse effected and the person they are communicating with. This paper will cover what burn-out is, who is susceptible to burn out, and treatment and prevent nursing burn out.
Ethics can be set apart as the subject to have many different categories, some of them could be good and evil, up or down, high and low. Ethics tells us what is the better option not just for ourselves nor generation, but for the human race as a whole. We are to make good representative of all and not just to yourself, do good so that good can be spread out throughout the whole universe and make it a universal law. In other words set the ground rules to acting morally enough to make your life a life worth living, with goodness in what we do and create. What I would consider a good foundation or knowledge of ethics could be explained with the moral philosophy of Aristotle and Emmanuel Kant, what I will cover here won’t be considered to be everything nor something, I will shimmer the subject on how these two stand in their own philosophy.
Burnout is a highly unusual type of stress disorder that is essentially characterized by emotional exhaustion, lack of empathy with patients, depersonalization, and a reduced sense of personal accomplishments. The nature of the work that healthcare practitioners perform predisposes them to emotional exhaustion. On the other hand, the lack of empathy towards patients is caused by the nurses feeling that they are underpaid and unappreciated. Numerous researches have associated burnout with the increasing rate of nurse turnover. This paper explores the causes of burnouts in nurses as well as what can be done to prevent the them.
Recognizing the signs and symptoms of when to stop and recollect one’s self is one of the strongest methods for contesting burnout. Research has shown that the consumption of alcohol, smoking, and certain meats have also been known to increase the risk of triggering stress hormones and illnesses while eating healthy is known to lower the risk of being stressed, overweight, developing obesity, and certain cancers (Darton et al 2004). Speaking with friends, family, and having a strong support system, as well as a rapport with the director of nursing is known to relieve some stress and anxiety. By speaking to the higher ups in management and discussing one’s feelings regarding the work environment, taking breaks to recharge, and keeping the lines of communication open the incidence of burnout greatly decreases. In the workplace, stress can have some strong physical and mental effects on employees. To best understand stress, it is first important to define it. Stress is defined as “a feeling of tension that occurs when a person perceives that a given situation is about to exceed one’s ability to cope and consequently could endanger one’s well being” (Hitt, Miller & Colella, 2011). Stress on the job is usually the result of people feeling inadequate and unable to perform the given duties of a position at a high level. This could be the result of not having the tools necessary to complete the work or having an outside need that is unable to be met while performing duties. Today, we’ll examine different types of stress and the effects that stress can have on individuals and the workplace.
Ethics is the good in an individual and should not be confused or interchanged with morality. As morality are the ways that an individual can obtain good by following the laws of one’s society and the commandments of one’s religion. Although there are many great philosophers whom have impacted the world, multiples of them have extremist views about society, and therefore Aristotle is the philosopher whom I consider has a similar perspective of ethics as myself. He discusses how the “good life” comes from happiness and continues to explain to attain the “good life” it must be done as a community. Even though Aristotle is one of the eldest philosophers, his ideas of ethics are still relevant in today’s society.
Ethics are moral principles or values that govern the conduct of an individual or a group.It is not a burden to bear, but a prudent and effective guide which furthers life and success. Ethics are important not only in business but in academics and society as well because it is an essential part of the foundation on which a civilized society is built.

Some would argue the concept of what can be define as moral as immoral in conjunction with ethics by means of feelings, religion, law, culture, and science. Although they prove good standings they cannot be accounted for as those rationales are more so that of opinion that are altered daily depending of that of the individual. For this reason any act can be considered moral as we can use descriptive education depicting that of ethics, in which we live a life seeking how things should be and that it depends on the individual. So who is to say what’s right and what’s wrong. If it exists in the universe it can be moral.
