INTRODUCTION
Introduction and background
This research paper is an attempt to study the energy efficient technologies and the role of day lighting in making a building energy efficient . The use of energy in buildings has increased in recent years due to the growing demand in energy used for lighting, heating and cooling in buildings. Without energy buildings could not be operated or inhabited. A combination of higher energy prices, skyrocketing demand for electricity and deepening environmental concerns has pushed India to a tipping point with regard to energy efficiency in buildings. A solution is urgently needed as the way buildings are designed and constructed today will not only have an impact on their operating costs today, but will affect the world’s energy consumption patterns and environmental conditions for many years to come.
Energy Efficiency
Energy efficiency means utilizing the minimum amount of energy for heating, cooling, equipments and lighting that is required to maintain comfort conditions in a building. An important factor impacting on energy efficiency is the building envelope. This includes all of the building elements between the interior and the exterior of the building such as: walls, windows, doors, roof and foundations. All of these components must work together in order to make a building energy efficient.

Objective
• The objective of this study is to research for daylighting technologies and analyse their performance in order to reduce energy consumption in commercial buildings in delhi ncr climate. When selected properly the daylighting techniques and façade design will allow reduction of the energy need for artificial lighting, which indirectly helps reduce the load on any active cooling system.
• To provide designers the tool and data to achieve energy efficient results as it is not yet given in NBC of india.
• To facilitate the wide spread deployment of such systems into the delhi commercial buildings.
Methodology
LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a certification program for green buildings with stringent requirements for building energy efficient and environmentally responsible structures. Some requirements of this program include specific building materials, smart grid capable, gray water reclamation systems, green space minimums, high levels of insulation and low thermal transfer glass (US Green Building Council). More focus is necessary on the indoor environment in schools, day care centres, hospitals and nursing homes for elderly, because children, hospital patients and elderly are sensitive subgroups. There are a number of indications that the indoor environment at home is normally worse than in the indoor office environment. With the advances in technology today, we are able to produce a variety of energy-efficient products, one of which is the compact fluorescent lamp (CFL). Having come a long way from the energy-absorbing incandescents, CFL is clearly the choice for the future. CFLs potentially could save nonrenewable energy resources and electricity expenses because they are so efficient. When we switch over to the CFL, we no longer have to constantly replace burnt out incandescents because a CFL will last “10 times [longer than] the average life of the longest-lived incandescents” (Petrowski, 1995). In addition, for only 13 to 15 watts of electricity, the CFL delivers the equivalent light of a 60 or 75 watt incandescent bulb, representing an energy savings of about 80% (Luoma, 1991). Therefore, we no longer have to drill more oil or mine more coal because if these energy efficient lights were installed in all U.S. homes over the next 20 years, “the savings in energy would equal the estimated energy content of Alaska’s entire North Slope oil fields” (Miller, 1997). Energy efficient lights could also save U.S. businesses $15-20 billion per year in electricity bills (Miller, 1997). It is evident that the potential benefit for the environment is enormous.

Sustainable buildings are becoming somewhat of a necessity in the world today. As the demand for green building develops, so does the demand for green building materials. Just as the old techniques and building materials seem to disappear in the assembly of things, they are now making a come back. Green building focuses on the efficiency of major resources like water and energy. As the cost for sustainable materials and products are on the decline, building green seems to be the most cost effective kind of design and construction. Looking specifically at green materials and their impact on the production of structures, it is evident that they are a prime choice for building material. The use of green materials should be promoted because they are better for the environment, more healthful for the consumer, and better for the economy.
Passive solar design and architecture may seem like a distant dream in our fast paced modern world, but in reality it’s more of a modern revival of a style of energy efficient building that has been around for millennia. What once seemed to be common sense ideas for designing a house that could both keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter has somehow been forgotten since we started to overuse the planet’s resources on our own comforts. When heating a house took lots of effort it was the wise choice to design a building that could use the energy provided by the sun in the most advantageous ways. Unfortunately, in my opinion, since all we have to do now to heat our house is a turn a dial and pay the bills, many of the simplest ways to cut down on our rising energy consumption have been completely disregarded. Fossil fuels allowed people to provide artificial light and temperatures. This meant that houses could be built without paying attention to the natural world. However, as more and more people agree that fossil fuels will almost certainly run out sometime in the next century, there has been a growing revival in passive solar design. Here, I hope to show you some of the basic principles of passive solar design and how they helped people thousands of years ago in an effort to make people understand how these ancient techniques can be improved on today to help with our growing energy problem.

Household energy conservation is a very practical and realistic approach to conserving energy within our society. US households consume a tremendous amount of natural gas as well as electric energy. It has been calculated that the amount of energy consumed within the US increased exponentially from about 1850 to 1975. If energy continued to increase at this rate, we would be experiencing severe energy shortages in our current society. Luckily, steps towards conservation, including various energy regulations, have curbed that growth somewhat, brining the predicted 160 Qbtu/yr for the year 2000 down to around 93.8 Qbtu/yr by the year 1996. However, household energy usage is still a major issue as households consume about 38% of the total consumed energy and contribute greatly to natural gas consumption and issues such as global warming. Therefore, it is important that people understand how we use energy in the household and what steps can be taken to conserve that energy.
