In the field of Anthropology, working as a cultural anthropologist, it requires a lot for one to “Understand culture through the study of its origins, development, and diversity” (Powerpoint 1). With that being said emic and ethic are two different styles that are applied and play a huge role when it comes to learning different cultures. Corn, beans, & especially hot peppers, followed by other pre-Columbian times, are said to be the go-to items when it comes to Mexican dishes, at least that's what many claim is what they love most . Mexicans are known for their food when it comes to them holding any type of celebration and they make it seem like it is a big deal. They are known to serve mostly only dinner and desserts. Most of the time it may include rice, beans, and some type of meat making followed by dessert, making it seem like a mexican restaurant. Their culture is seen in the eyes of others,“the type of people that throw the craziest parties starting at midnight that continues until the next day” (Culture of Mexico 1). It is said that their tradition always involves having a special slow song involving their parents, that is done in almost every occasion. Take for example how when a child turns 15, they have this different way of celebrating it by performing a ceremony where they have the girl change from shoes to high heels which is supposed to be a meaningful symbol to them. The Latinos make up close to 16 percent of the total American population, thus becoming the 2nd largest ethnic community. Just like many other migrant populations, the Latinos seek to keep in touch with their Hispanic traditions and cultures. As Alvarez puts it, children born in the US are thus taught certain cultural events and values so as to maintain their lineage. The most common one as discussed by Alvarez in her book is the quinceañera. This refers to a girl’s celebration as she reaches fifteen. This day of celebration is supposed to mark a girl’s transition from being a child to an adult woman. Among other traditional symbols, these parties are huge and include choreographed dances and ball gowns.
School children also often get a chance to try their hands at creating basic Mexican cuisine. In some areas of the southwest, particularly in the city of Los Angeles, celebrations of regional Mexican dancing and music are held. However, regardless of the area of celebration, one could almost certainly find mariachi band filled restaurants, outdoor festivities, and social gatherings with large amounts of Dos Equis and Corona beer for the adults. Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a day that focuses on celebrating Mexican heritage and the Mexican way of life, but still pays homage to the battle that gave way to Mexico’s independence. In this Essay, I will enlighten you about the “Dia de los Muertos” in the Spanish culture. It will contain the history of the holiday, the events that go on during it, and the food eaten on that day. One thing that you must remember is that Dia de los Muertos traditions vary from town to town because Mexico is not culturally monolithic.
I am familiar with both the Mexican culture and the regular American Culture. Those two cultures aren’t alike. Mexicans celebrate different holidays. In American culture, we celebrate 4th of July because of the declaration of independence. But in Mexican culture, we also celebrate Independence Day but on the 16th of September, because we won the war against the Spaniards. Also, in American culture we celebrate the holiday that all kids love, Halloween on October 31st. Halloween is a day to go trick-or-treating and have fun. In Mexico, we celebrate “El Día De Los Muertos “(Day of The Dead) on November 1st. Day of the dead is a day where we remember all the people that have died and that holiday is in honor of them. Mexicans also celebrate “El Día De Los Reyes Magos” also known as “Day Of The Three Wise Men”. This day is celebrated for the day that the three wise men took each 1 gift to the Virgin Mary’s son. Columbus Day is a holiday that is celebrated in both American and Mexican culture. But besides the holidays, Mexican food is different from the all American food that is seen everyday. From pozole, tacos, quesadillas, and so many other foods, the cultures aren’t the same.

Hispanic food traditions in Spain are more “sacred and ritualistic” than American food traditions. They eat garbanzos, gazpacho, picadillos, pisto chock, eggplant, nisperos, higos chumbos, etc. It’s very common to eat fruit for a dessert. For breakfast it’s a no-no to eat eggs, instead its fruit or toast. Cereal is okay to eat if you’re a kid. Lunch is their main meal, and usually is a three-course meal. Firstly, one aspect that is both Mexican and American is the cuisine. The original food for Mexico is very spicy and most of the time very colorful as well. Mexicans use spices, peppers, tomatoes, and cheese in many of the native dishes. They use an assortment of meat: pork, beef, lamb, and chicken. When Mexican restaurants spring up in the United States the food is toned down to appeal to Americans. The Mexican Americans use less spices to make the dishes milder rather than the hot, spicy native food. The food, still Mexican, takes on the likeness of American food. This is shown in the United States by all of the Mexican American restaurants such as Taco Bell. Therefore Mexicans have Americanized their food. “For Hispanics live on this side of the border, where Kraft manufactures Mexican-style Velveeta, and where Jack in the Box serves Fajita Pita.” (Rodriguez 131). The customs they learned as kids have been passed on to me. We were always having barbeques in the backyard, Christmas parties, Easter egg hunting, having pan de los muertos on the Day of the Death, and celebrating Mexico’s Independence. Even though we celebrate Mexican holidays we would also celebrate American Holidays like 4th of July, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. Mexican food is influenced by the ancient civilization. For examples the Mayans ate corn tortilla with a bean paste that covered the tortilla. The Aztec found out that mixing and squishing different types of vegetables makes a savory appetizer they call salsa. They also learned how to make what are now called tamales. When the Spaniards came they brought over milk, rice and other products that were new to Mexico. But have now remained in the cuisine.
