Have you ever thought of what coming of age means? Depending on a person's past experience and circumstances that can change. To a person living in the average American household coming of age could possibly mean: getting a car, going to college, or getting a job. But for a person living in a third world country that could mean going to work in a factory or cooking food for their family. Moreover coming of age means growth and with that growth comes ample other hurdles such as new challenges, responsibilities, and expectations. Some responsibilities may be more chores. Some chores may require skills that a seven or eight year old might not have. For example an eight year couldn’t drive the trash to the dump or drive to the store to buy groceries. Another responsibility as people come of age is being placed in charge. Growing up means becoming more mature, in other words, someone who is accountable, responsible, and someone who can supervise those below them. Moving on, in a person’s childhood their parent had full control over their schedule. However as students “come of age,” and advance into high school or college there's more freedom. Not only within student’s schedule, but also in extracurricular activities and with this freedom another responsibility is placed upon the students' shoulders, arranging their schedule. In addition, not only is the student required to plan out the schedule, but also communicate it to those needed. Obviously school is a necessary requirement for learning to do laundry but these are skills that our parents need to let us learn. In conclusion, the growing up or the two stages in life are governed totally by a series of situations, parenting, and events that affect the outcome of how the individuals will handle the changes in life. Using human intellect and determining aspects that are normal, life will be lived and a good balanced person in society will be achieved. Because every person is different and an individual, the outcome in everyone will be different. Mature people may encounter different levels of stressful situations or circumstances than younger adults. They are more practical in coping with stress and have a greater acceptance of some things in life that cannot be altered or improved, and, can easily adapt to changes that will occur in life.
As times have changed, so has our culture. Our country tends to veer children towards one particular individualization over another. It seems developmental individualization is more common. People have expectations by society which they must fulfill, and are expected to do so at particular times in their lives, as said by Tamara Haraven who argues the importance of “… the timing of transitions, with those to adulthood becoming more uniform and orderly.” People are expected in life to go to school, work, get married, start a family, all these things are expected to be done at a certain time in their life. People may not want to do all this in this order and whatever point in their life, but they do because they are expected to do so. This is all supposed to happen developmentally. People are molded by society, actively making decisions and trying to be ahead of life’s obstacles. This is occurring in not only America but as well as in Europe, as Wallace observes how instead of becoming their own individual people, people “choose identities from among and increasingly complex array of options”. Sven Morch makes similar observations, on youths who must ‘master’ their adolescence ‘ways’ in order to become successful adults, showing the importance of structure to their culture. Life must be followed in a particular sequence according to ‘contemporary capitalism’ in order to succeed in life. The words “coming of age” can be used to describe a situation or event when one is free to do what is given after that stage in life. For an example, once someone turns eighteen they can move out. This is because not all, but most people mature by this age, and those people are responsible and able to live out on their own. But how does one know when they have become of age?
