Have you ever thought of what coming of age means? Depending on a person's past experience and circumstances that can change. To a person living in the average American household coming of age could possibly mean: getting a car, going to college, or getting a job. But for a person living in a third world country that could mean going to work in a factory or cooking food for their family. Moreover coming of age means growth and with that growth comes ample other hurdles such as new challenges, responsibilities, and expectations. As people grow and ”come of age,” they encounter new challenges. Some of these might be increased school work due to the high grade they're in. Other challenges might be conflicting activities. Some responsibilities may be more chores. Some chores may require skills that a seven or eight year old might not have. For example an eight year couldn’t drive the trash to the dump or drive to the store to buy groceries. Another responsibility as people come of age is being placed in charge. Growing up means becoming more mature, in other words, someone who is accountable, responsible, and someone who can supervise those below them. Moving on, in a person’s childhood their parent had full control over their schedule. However as students “come of age,” and advance into high school or college there's more freedom. Not only within student’s schedule, but also in extracurricular activities and with this freedom another responsibility is placed upon the students' shoulders, arranging their schedule. In addition, not only is the student required to plan out the schedule, but also communicate it to those needed. Rather than looking at these as more work these should be looked at as a marker in your development from a child to an adult. Challenges are meant to strengthen you for the rigors of adult life. Expectations signify the criticism of others you may encounter. Lasty responsibilities bespeak the substrate skills necessary in an adult. On a final note coming of age is different for everybody so do not condemn coming of age to these three categories, it expands to ideas that nobody would even
