Large animals exhibit aggressive behavioral patterns such as kicking and biting when they are in stress, which require restraining for maintenance and health care procedures. In the case of cattle and horse, a chute that is a small stall into which the animal is lead where the head is fixed and the back closed is widely used in order to prevent any movement that could injure the worker. It should have soil side-walls [which is not present in the one here] to prevent animals from any distractions thus calming them while being examined. As mentioned earlier, handling also involves providing a safe environment for farm animals. Animal passages should be free of first tripping hazards such as sharp edges, and second of slipping agents, which pushes …show more content…
The farmer should never turn his back to an unrestrained sheep that would attack him at any minute.
When working on their feet, sheep must be restrained by putting one hand below its neck and the other on the back of its leg and turning its head inside so it can be put in a seated posture where he would not be able to use its feet to kick or injure anyone.
Goats handling is very similar to that of sheep.
Personal protective equipment:
Personal protective equipment include: safety glasses, long trousers, steel –toes shoes since a misplaced hoof of a 500kg cow can crush the bones of a human foot
The farmer or workers should wear protective clothing when working with sick or injured animals.
When managing animals that have zoonotic diseases that are transmitted to humans such as leptospirosis, brucellosis, salmonellosis and ringworm, basic sanitation and hygiene practices should be applied. Such practices include proper disinfection by potassium permanganate, formalin or chlorine , burning the protective clothing used to treat these animals, and separating the healthy animals from the infected ones
It is not just the animals who are being treated wrongly. The workers are vulnerable and suffer from injuries on a daily basis. This workforce requires so much protection, such as chainmail outfits to protect themselves from tools. From cuts, sprains, to amputations, “ The injury rate in a slaughterhouse is about three times higher than the rate in a typical American factory.” (238). Many immigrants come to the states, some illegally. Companies give their supervisors bonuses when they have little reported injuries as a reward for a spectacular job. Regardless, these supervisors do not make attempts to make the work environment safer. They threaten the employees with their jobs. They will put injured employees on easier shifts to heal so it will not look suspicious as to why they are in pain. Next to failing to report injuries, women in the slaughterhouses suffer from sexual assault. Male coworkers pressure women into dating and sex. Reported cases include men using animal parts on them in an explicit manner, making work another kind of nightmare. All this corruption and lack of respect for workers is all for a cheap meal people buy when they have the

The use of the cattle prod is one of the most widely believe myths of rodeo. “The cattle prod is a device developed by the cattle industry to move livestock. Use of the prod has become one of the most universally accepted and humane methods of herding animals on ranches, in veterinary clinics, and, on occasion, at professional rodeos. The PRCA also regulates the use of prods. PRCA rules require that the prod be used as little as possible and that the animal be touched only on the hip or shoulder area.” (PRCA Rodeo Equipment) “An electric prod provides a low current shock to induce the movement of the animals. This type of prod does not harm the animals, as it provides a mild electrical shock sensation that leaves no prolonged effects.” (PRCA Rodeo
Exotic animals carry diseases and infections that can be potentially harmful or fatal to humans, jeopardizing the safety of the community. These diseases range in severity from common ringworm infections from African pygmy hedgehogs to lyssaviruses in p...
Those with sheep as their spirit animal usually are innocent, in a sense that they are child-like, or gentle. Another possible trait is that they match and accept the norm of society. If it is a negative connotation behind it, sheep can mean that you view yourself as weak, and that your vulnerability could eventually render you powerless to the world. Positively speaking, sheep represent self-limitations, and that you not only understand your limits, but you respect them and know not to push yourself too far. The sheep totem commonly means that a part of you stays within the boundaries of society, family values or both (Sheep Spirit Animal). Overall, sheep as spirit animals tend to lead people to being more gentle and more soft with themselves, others, and the world around
Property owner(s) should have the correct protective gear if the area is deemed unsafe to work in. Contaminated areas should be well marked to identify the existence of Asbestos.
Also at “…mare in foal, their cows in calf, their sows when they are ready to farrow; nor offer to beat or kick them (as is too frequent a practice) for fear of a miscarriage.” (Swift 6)
In Blake’s work “The Lamb,” he shows innocence through sheep and their nature. Blake describes sheep’s nature by saying that they “Feed/By the stream & o'er the mead/ have thee clothing of delight/ Softest clothing, wooly, bright” (Blake 4-6). This passage shows that sheep are providers to man and show no harm. Blake says that sheep has a, “tender voice/ making all the vales rejoice?” (Blake 7-8). Blake makes sheep seem to have a joyful emotion and wants to share it with others. The sheep has a tender voice which means it is not intimidating. Natoli, who is the author of the novel William Blake, says that,
However, health concerned organizations want to ban the use of these products due to the increasing fears that they can cause harm to the consumers. For over 50 years, antibiotics have been added to the food of animals such as poultry, cattle and pigs. The main purpose for doing so is to lower the risk of disease in animals. Farm animals are housed together in overcrowded areas, which are very dirty. The hygiene level can get to such a poor state that they are often in contact with their own excreta as well as excreta of the other animals they are housed with and because of tight single air space they share, the likelihood of catching diseases from one another is further increased and very often a whole heard can be infected at one time.
The safety procedures that I follow while at work include maintaining a safe and steady pace, wearing protective gear when needed, and reporting all unsafe conditions to my boss. It is important to me that I do well on my job so I am able to save money to financially support myself in the near future. In leisure activities, such as sports, I make sure I am wearing the proper equipment so I don’t get injured. In my free time I also enjoy volunteering at the animal shelter. When helping out with the cats, I wear gloves and long sleeves to avoid getting scratched while cleaning out their cage. While working with the dogs, I always have to put them on a leash before opening the kennels in order to ensure the safety of me and everyone else who is in the building.
Since that birthing I have immersed myself in a spectrum of veterinary settings: from the zoo to the lab, from the farm to the urban clinic. My efforts have fostered an ever-evolving understanding of and respect for both the medical elements of the veterinary practice and the far-reaching responsibility of the veterinarian in the global community. Some of these countless junctions include public safety, agricultural stability, particularly in subsistence farming regions, community education, and relevance to human medicine. My experiences in this unusually wide range of contexts have cultivated awareness, versatility, responsibility, and dedication that, together with continually honed clinical skills, have prepared me to be an exemplary member of the veterinary
Through many years, companies have tested animals to help prove that their products are safe for humans. This has become a very inhumane practice in which many animals are subjected to intolerable cruelty. Animals are treated cruelty because they are kept in cages with unhealthy conditions. Important aspects must be considered in the inhumane treatment of animals in research facilities. These aspects are focused in th...
Animal welfare is a fairly recent, yet troubling argument in society. This subject is a strong argument on a variety of opinions. Animal welfare has become a major issue and has grown internationally. The human concern and the safety and rights of animals is the meaning of the concept of animal welfare. Through decades of animal welfare, people fight to prevent the action of animal cruelty and bring help towards animal rights.
Sheep were the first animals domesticated for a food source. Domestication exists so that people always have a source of fresh meat and don’t have to wait a few days till they can find game again. (Diamond, 2002)
Would you like to live a happy and productive life? Then get pets! I must admit it is hard to believe that domesticated animals can promote mental and physical health, but many studies have shown that they can. People who own pets have been known to lead longer and happier lives than those without them. As we get older, we become less active. The more inactive we become, the higher our risk of death. We therefore need something in our lives to keep us busy so we don’t die prematurely, and a pet is just the thing to do it. This is probably because of the companionship, exercise, and responsibility that they provide. On the other hand, you must find a pet that is compatible with you or with your life style. Maintaining good mental health is crucial for living a normal life.
