A Career in Public Relations The field of communications ranges from being in the spotlight to working behind the scenes so to speak. For instance, most technicians, newspaper editors, and directors work to make sure everything is functioning properly and looks neat when they present their work for everyone to see and enjoy. On the contrary, people who have careers more open and can even be considered public figures, such as news anchors, TV hosts, and radio personalities, are in the spotlight. I wanted to be able to choose a field of study that could offer me both. I have always been intrigued by the world of mass communications and when it came time for me to choose a major, I knew I wanted my career to be in Public Relations. A job career …show more content…

In order to be successful in whatever field of PR it is crucial to keep up with the current events and trends of today. Social media is becoming a new way for people in public relations to reach out and grab the attention of a younger audience. Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram are the most popular media apps that can be used to get a message across. “Many stories are actually more powerful when told through the right social channel. For example, Microsoft used a video to share a story about how their technology is making a difference in people’s lives” (Social Media Examiner Magazine). The progress the public relation field has made since social media is astounding and everything needed to do can be done in much quicker time. “In the old days, pre-social media, when a news story broke, PR pros would send emails, faxes and make phone calls to their lists of reporters and announce their client is available to comment on the story right away” (Forbes
I found it so cool that our degree could be used in such an interesting way, which was something that I was surprised about a lot while researching. A Communications degree is very versatile. This was very apparent when I asked my professors what careers past graduates of the degree have gone onto. Both rattled off tons of different jobs in the media and corporate sectors. I was very

As the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks approaches, it is surprising and somewhat disconcerting that the United States is still struggling with how to employ strategic communication (SC). Many believe the main reason the US is losing the global war of ideas and the war on terror itself is directly related to its inability to effectively communicate and XX. Making gains in the war on terror will not come from kinetic actions alone. “In order to be successful, it’s important for our messages to be coordinated – quick and credible. They must speak to the conscience of people around the world.” Unfortunately, the U.S. military hasn’t been overly successful in this arena. There is much work to be done to improve SC efforts within the Department of Defense (DoD).

We now live in a liberal democracy were public opinion influences political action. Although I am not certain with a specific career, a communications degree will prepare me for a wide range of jobs because communication serves as the backbone for any organization. The major requirements along with the four specialization options at Rutgers, will offer me knowledge on a variety of different areas within communications. I will be able to explore my interests while receiving an excellent education. I think it is amazing that I can combine more than one specialization to extend my career options even further. The specific courses at Rutgers such as Communication and Technology, Organization Communication, and Persuasive Communication will assist me with the skills I need to succeed in this rapidly changing, digital world. To benefit myself and my education, I am definitely going to take advantage of everything Rutgers has to offer. I am interested in joining The Association for Women in Communications as well as the Public Relations Student Society of American- both organizations sponsored by the Department of Communications. Joining these
Communication studies was a good pick for me because, although there is always room for improvement, I can still garnish some more knowledge and information to better improve my oral skills. My personality will really fit into the communication department. I have been told about how fun the communication department can be, and how outgoing people are in the department. I initially liked this a lot because I am very outgoing myself and love to talk to people. I feel that I can be able to exhibit concise messages to people, clearly and efficiently.
I would like to begin this reflection paper with my past experiences. First, I am an older student – obtaining my first bachelors from Hofstra University. As a sophomore in broadcast journalism, I was assigned the task of interviewing a graduate student in speech-language pathology as part of a career exploration video for incoming freshman. Filming her and her fellow classmates as they helped children overcome their stutter and gain both confidence and a voice, I was fascinated by the amazing work they were doing. But I had already begun searching for a career path in public relations, soon taking a job at a public relations firm on Long Island focusing on business clients. Within three months, I started dreaming about a career more than a

Although I am experienced in social media and finding a target audience, I have limited experience with graphic software other than Photo Studio. This is a setback because I would need to learn how to work with more advanced graphic software; however, I am a quick learner and would be up to speed on the required software with limited training. Learning this new skill set would give me valuable knowledge to use in future positions, and I have always been intrigued by graphic design. Another skill needed for this position is excellent communication skills and that is an area that I have always excelled. An area I would need to develop would be knowledge and skills relating to public relations. These newfound skills excite me because they would further my business education and
The history of the career field of public relations all started when Julius Caesar hired a team to persuade the citizens that he was doing a good job running the area. Caesar’s influence led to public relations in the Unite States beginning in the 1800’s. Newspapers ran friendly columns to reward advertisers with “free publicity.” Then, in the 20th century, the official job title of “public relations specialist” came into play. Those first public relations specialists were publicity agents and mostly former journalists (Mogel). Now, having a career in public relations most nearly means that a person has the job of creating publicity for a specific brand or person (Lila B. Stair).
Today, public relations is a complex profession by thousands of thousands of people all the world to practice. Almost all large and small organizations have their own public relations department or they need to outsource their public relations to a company. Public relations practitioners work for schools and universities, companies, governments, professional and trade associations, hospitals, hotels, non-profit charities, and other else more (Grunig, 2001). Therefore, PR is an important department for organizations.
Ethics, as according to Johanessen, Valde, & Whedbee (2008, p. 1) is a study that argues what should be the grounds principles for right and wrong human behaviour. There are public relations scholars from Kruckeberg (1998) have made a point to relate universal ethical values as professional values. It is therefore necessary to integrate these values into the public relations profession. The Institute of Public Relations Singapore (IPRS) has supported this in their code of ethics. A principal stated that, “A member shall conduct his professional activities with respect for the public interest and the interest of the profession.” This means that every decision and strategy that the public relations practitioner should account for their employee, client or community. However, a report done by
Public relations is everywhere today. It is a practice that has become an important aspect of any business venture. Whether an organization is not for profit, for profit, or governmental, they still need and desire to communicate their purpose within the community and public relations allows this to happen. There are several publics in which the PR practitioner must correspond with and each requires a different means of communication. Internal publics are inside the organizations such as clerks, managers, and stockholders. "External publics are those not directly connected to the organization: the press, government, educators, customers, suppliers, and the community" (Seitel, 2004). Each public plays a key role in the PR of the organization. The many functions of PR can also be categorized based on what purpose they serve the organization.
