A majority of high schools in America have classes which pertain to the study of animals. A countless number of schools have recently added multiple classes such as these. Hurricane High School especially is in need of adding an animal science class. Many students would benefit from this class in several different ways. Not only this, but the school will benefit greatly as well. It is highly recommended that Hurricane High School should offer an animal science class for the 2014-15 school year. This class would benefit the school as a whole by preparing students planning to enter the occupational field dealing with animals, make the school look more impressive, and give students a chance to try new things and possibly find hidden interests of theirs. First of all, classes such as these would prepare students who are planning on entering that occupational field. Many students have entered that particular field in college, however too many have no high school education pertaining to it. The job outlook for a profession dealing with animals—such as a veterinarian—is expected to increase by thirty-six percent within the next ten years.* At the same time however, high school students preparing to become a veterinarian are only taking the general science classes because they do not have the option of taking any animal science classes.* Many other classes that act as additional help to prepare for a specific occupation are being offered. At Hurricane High School alone, there are over 20 Career Technology Education classes including Foods and Nutrition, Clothing, Emergency Medical Services, and several more. In conclusion, Hurricane High School is in desperate need of adding an Animal Science class to the course catalog. It would benefit the school immensely by preparing students in that field, creating a better outlook on the school, and giving students the chance to discover new things. The university-statehouse-industrial complex has grown such that the traditional models of primary and secondary education have survived two or three decades beyond their practical use. With a public school system that segregates and discriminates based on, “college material or not?” (Brolin & Loyd, 1989) and a university system that places only one in five graduates in work in their field of major (cite), our educational system has passed its prime and is still training and educating for 20th century job markets that no longer exist. The way that we educate and what we educate for and why needs rethinking from the top down and needs to be more practical and pragmatic. Career and technical education (CTE) consisting of specialized, targeted, and focused vocational programs at all levels do more than just prepare a student for a real job – these programs have practical education and socialization value that conventional classrooms centered around a teacher’s monologue for many do not. Nowhere is the added value of such targeted programs more useful and valuable than in special classes, courses, and CTE training aimed at students with disabilities.

For this project, I decided to take on the career of a veterinarian. As a veterinarian, I would have to examine animals to diagnose their health problems, treat and dress wounds, perform surgery on animals,test for and vaccinate against diseases, operate medical equipment(x-ray machines, etc.), advise animal owners about general care, medical conditions, and treatments, prescribe medication, and euthanize animals. To get a job in this profession, you have to have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. You also have to have to take many science classes including biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, zoology, microbiology, and animal science.You would have to take about four years of college which adds up to about $100,000 dollars in student
I am a biology and chemistry major at Harford Community College and am working to obtain an associate of science degree in biology and chemistry- calculus based physics from HCC. My plan is to transfer to the University of Maryland and study Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine with the goal of entering Veterinary School. I have been working towards veterinary school since I was fourteen years old. My passion for the subject began while I was working at Olney Farm, a horse farm in Fallston, MD. I began horseback riding at ten-years old and started volunteering at the farm within five months of my first lesson. I was homeschooled; therefore, I could get to the barn before all the other children got out of school. I learned how to retrieve the horses from their fields, groom them, and get them ready for the lessons for that day. Eventually, I performed these tasks for eight lessons a week. I enjoyed observing the various behaviors of the horses, administering special diets to specific horses, treating their surface wounds, and carrying out general tasks to maintain the horses’ health. This is when my desire for veterinary medicine began.
For as long as I can remember, my childhood dream has always been wanting to become a veterinarian. While other kids were outside having fun at the playground, I was at the library reading books and learning about the different animals. However, as I matured, I realized that being a veterinarian isn’t just about caring for and assisting injured animals. Being a veterinarian means having the ability to make quick decisions in stressful situations, showing complete dedication and passion to this profession, and being able to effectively communicate to pet owners.
For anyone to become a veterinarian, one must have all the necessary requirements for both education and on the job training. During high school, science courses are highly recommended. After high school, one must obtain their doctor of veterinary medicine degree. To achieve this goal, Ferguson’s Career Guidance Center says one must “attend 4 years at college of veterinary medicine, complete 45-90 hours of undergraduate study, and must pass at least one examination in the state at in which they intend to practice” (3-4 2014). During a person’s schooling, Veterinarians are expected to make decent grades and to show an interest for learning the sciences as well as technology. Besides having the education, a person must also indulge in some training both on the job and in shadowing experiences. Through my experiences, I have learned the reality of veterinary medicine. It is not about playing with puppies and kittens. My clients might not appreciate me, my patients might be difficult, I may get frustrated, and I might not make much money. Yet veterinary medicine is about more than that. It is a career with purpose, a lifelong source of challenge, personal growth, fulfilled academic curiosity, and opportunities to impact lives, both human and animal. In return, I offer a strong scientific aptitude, along with a diverse background and natural empathy. The Pre-K and Kindergarten class studied habitats of various animals and insects. They were given examples and tough how the animals made their homes. The students built a bird house as their project and as something to take home to remind them of what they learned. Finally they went on a field trip to Legoland where they explored and built “habitats” for their families and the Lego people. The first and second grade class learned about marine life and the ocean. They built shoe box dioramas of coral reefs and created art projects depicting sea life as well as learning new facts about the ocean. The students got to go to the Aquarium for their field trip. Finally the third and fourth graders studied the rain forests and their ecosystems. The students built rainforest models and terrariums along with small group discussions on different ideas human intervention and conservation. Growing up in rural Texas, you have to learn to care for the things that are important to you. There really is not much to entertain yourself with so many adolescents become vulnerable to trouble. Luckily for me, I grew up with the responsibilities that came with growing up on a farm. I had things to care for on a daily basis and for the longest time, the things I cared for most were animals. I exhibited livestock in my youth and this is where I spent the majority of my time. I would come home from football or basketball practice and go straight up to the barn to tend to my animals. Along with feeding and cleaning, I would often administer vaccinations and antibiotics when needed. Because of my interest in medicine and science coupled with my love for animals some could say that I was destined to become veterinarian. The major I chose, animal science, even supported that notion. However, it was not until the summer after my freshman year of undergraduate where I realized it was human medicine that my heart was yearning for.
While Reading about the Association of Zoo Veterinarian Technicians (AZVT) I found their purpose quite interesting. Their objectives are to promote and improve professional standards among zoo technicians. Also, to maintain a cooperative working relationship with other zoo professionals. Provide a forum for the presentation and exchange of information, challenges, and methodology encountered in the field of zoo veterinary technology through a quarterly newsletter, annual, and regional conferences. Encourage the recognition of the importance of the veterinary technician's role in zoo veterinary medicine, scientific study, and conservation. Educate the public, increasing the appreciation of the bond between human beings and all life on earth.
The recent events have caused me to speak out to uncover the hidden issues which have plagued the MSU Veterinary Technology program. During the writing of this letter, I recalled one of the program’s greatest experiences. This was the program which was the white coat ceremony and the reading of the Veterinary Technician Code of Conduct by myself and student cohort. I can no longer sit back, letting my voice be unheard seeing several students removed from the program based in part on teacher instruction. I have not chosen to write about the several personal struggles I have had with faculty instruction.
