The Impacts of Technology on Business
“Businesses have been at the forefront of technology for ages; whatever can speed production will draw in more business.” (McGrath). Today, it’s natural for technology to be linked with Business, from home to International Corporation. The technology developments that have been accomplished decades ago have carried an uprising in the corporate domain, affecting all qualities of the working class. Many of the executive decisions have been developed and assisted by many new and different technologies to increase efficiency in corporations big and small. Individuals that are employed within a business have the ability to meet and speak to clients in other countries in an instant via email, telephone, video-conferencing and etcetera. With these different methods of communication in place, it eliminates the prerequisite to be physically present in an office to speak directly with clients and coworkers. Although there are many positive impacts, technology can also have a negative effect. Businesses in the United States are affecting the economy and its employment rates by outsourcing to other countries around the world, which is also evident that these negative impacts can be detrimental to the economy’s growth.
The positive impact on the different methods of technology business’ communication has offered corporations more flexibility and efficiency as well as speed and complexity. Over the last sixty years of business activity, there has been new ways and means of conducting business through something we call technology. Technology is the advancement and use of electronic devices and other high-tech equipment to produce and progress knowledge into the future. Advancements in technology have affected management leadership in many ways over the last sixty years. New technology has altered leaders’ consciousness, language, and the way they view their organization. Technological advancements have made things easier for those in management leadership roles. But as with anything, there are positive and negative aspects of technology on leadership. Some of the positive aspects of technology are: the availability and use of wireless networking, collaboration tools, digital video, handheld devices, and videoconferencing. On the other hand, the negative aspects of technology are: it offers less privacy, it allows for less interaction with others, and it runs a high risk of contact with viruses.
Businesses are now able to approach overseas markets, they are no longer confined to their areas of establishment. Business today is inextricably intertwined with technology, from the smallest home office, to a multinational corporation with multiple monolithic legacy applications. It is impossible to be in business today without confronting the issues of technology. The way we do business today is different than 30 years ago. Technology has evolved around the areas of telecommunications, travel, stock markets, shipping and even around our daily lives.
There is no escape from technology. In most cases this is not a problem though. Many people respect and admire technology because it is there to benefit them. Without the technological advances we have had over the years, the world would not be what it is today. What people don’t understand is that technology can actually be a bad thing. In society today, people are looking for more and more ways to be entertained, and all it is doing is causing problems. People are doing less and less thinking and more and more watching, listening, and playing, all because of technology.
