"The A Team" is an Indie-folk song written by singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. It was released in 2011, and it was the lead single from his debut album +. The lyrics portray the inside life of a struggling drug addict named Angel, and the negative aspects of the life she is living. Sheeran uses metaphors, imagery and similes in the song to reveal the struggle of addiction. Firstly, Sheeran uses imagery. The first example of this is in the line, "Ripped gloves, raincoat." This line illustrates the broken life Angel is living, and how she uses a "raincoat" to shelter herself from the guilt she feels for allowing her addiction to get to this point. Another example of imagery is “but lately her face seems, slowly sinking, wasting.” This line makes it easy for the audience to visualize a girl with a sickly appearance, much like individuals with a heavy drug addiction. Sheeran’s use of imagery is perfect for giving the reader a menacing image of the events …show more content…
He sings, “White lips, pale face, breathing in snowflakes.” This is symbolism for her taking cocaine, hence the “snowflakes” she is breathing in. Her “white lips” and “pale face” are also an indication of this. Due to the fact that she is a drug addict, she more than likely does not get much sun and her pale skin is a tell-tale sign of this. Another example of symbolism is the line, “An Angel will die, covered in white.” This dark lyric placed at the end of the song is a symbol of Angel eventually passing away due to her addiction. Sheeran used similies to illustrate the inevitable outcome of addiction. In conclusion, Sheeran’s alluring use of imagery, metaphors and simile successfully paints a clear image in the readers head about the grave details of addiction, and to help the listeners realize the importance of making smart, reasonable decisions to fight shy of possibly ending up in the same situation as Angel in the story the lyrics
Imagery, when a writer describes something in such great detail, the reader can imagine the writer's meaning. Ruta Sepetys writes great samples of imagery in her writing. One of the many things that make up imagery is diction, extended metaphors, and rhetorical devices. A good example of the following parts in "Between Shades of Gray" is in two paragraphs in Chapter eight. Which is when Lina is describing what she sees at the train station
In “Nightmare” from Out of the Dust, Billie Joe wakes up from a nightmare, trembling in fear from a nightmare about the dust storms and her inability to play the piano. The poem is filled with symbolism, used to build up anxiety and uncertainty, and for Hesse to elaborate on her thoughts. “Through a howling dust storm, my lowered face was scrubbed raw by dirt and wind” dramatically demonstrates a mood of panic and distress. As the suspense builds, Hesse uses imagery to exhibit uneasiness and describe the situation even further, “dust crept inside my ears, up my nose, down my throat.” Many instances of figures of speech are used, such as similes, personification, and metaphors. After trudging through the dust, not caring about anything but
Firstly, when Logic says “I've been on the low I been taking my time/I feel like I'm out of my mind/It feel like my life ain't mine” he is talking about someone calling the suicide hotline who is depressed. Secondly, when Alessa Cara sing “It's the very first/breath when your head's been drowning underwater” when she says drowning she means losing hope, so when she’s taking her first breath it is symbolizing to gain back a little hope. Another example of a literary device is when Alessa Cara sings “It's the lightness in the air/when you're there/chest to chest with a lover” when she says lightness in the air she means the relief of depression off your chest. When Logic says “What's the day without a little night/I'm just tryna shed a little light” he is trying to say that even when there are bad times there can still be a little light or
...ors to describe her life and situation. This comes primarily from the fact that in her therapy sessions that is how she is taught to deal with everything. For example, one metaphor she talks about is “… she comes up with the idea of lighting candles to symbolize my past, present, and future…I’ve noticed my past melting… my present candle has stayed pretty much the same,” (D 266). She explains them as her past is become less controlling, her present is her and concrete ideas and her future is bright and untouched. These metaphors show how much she has grown and allow the things she is learning to have more meaning. All of these combine to make the piece very effective and insightful. They help to get her point across and call people to action to help against these crimes.
“Baby’s black balloon makes her fly”. With this intro the listener can predict a few things about the song but they still may not understand the full meaning. The Black Balloon is heroine. The Balloon makes her fly because she is getting high off of the drug. This part of the song introduces the drug usage without completely telling you what it means.
Even though they may want to other factors are usually at play. It takes a team in this instant to work through and accomplish the goal of sobriety. This novel has aided me in understanding the world of an addict better. It gave the insight that only a person in the addiction can give you. It helped me to see that whatever the driving force is in an addict, it can sometimes consume you. Some people can fight the urge to use, while others give in to the temptation. The most important task in addiction is to surround yourself with positive people and positive activity. Correspondingly, loss or drastic change should always be handled with caution. The divorce of his parents and going between his dad and mom’s house was upsetting. Nic not feeling like a part of his dad’s new family was depressing
In the reality of the postmodern world, where nature is gone and has been replaced by technology, where the world and humankind have become fused with the machine, and the existence of morality and reality are uncertain, it is difficult to find hope for a better existence or motivation to attempt to change one's existence. Addiction then becomes a logical avenue of escape from these bleak circumstances--not affecting reality, but transforming it into something bearable. The addictions that Case turns to allow him to escape from the hard reality of his life th...
David Sheff’s memoir, Beautiful Boy, revolves around addiction, the people affected by addiction, and the results of addiction. When we think of the word addiction, we usually associate it with drugs or alcohol. By definition, addiction is an unusually great interest in something or a need to do or have something (“Addiction”). All throughout the memoir, we are forced to decide if David Sheff is a worried father who is fearful that his son, Nic Sheff’s, addiction will kill him or if he is addicted to his son’s addiction. Although many parents would be worried that their son is an addict, David Sheff goes above and beyond to become involved in his son’s life and relationship with methamphetamine, making him an addict to his son’s addiction.
Gabor Mate 's essay “Embraced by the Needle” addresses important issues on the negative effects that childhood experiences have on the development of addictions, and the long term effects that drugs play throughout an addict 's life. The author states that addictions originate from unhappiness and pain that is often inflicted upon addicts at early age such as infancy. In Mate essay, he uses many patients past childhood experiences to help create a picture of the trauma that an addict faced as child and the link it plays with who they are today. Mate builds an impressive argument based on the way he organizes his ideas on what addiction is, and how it corresponds to a person 's childhood experience. The author does this effectively
This is then followed by insightfully examining the treatment process, specifically through grace as a key focus of overcoming addiction. May focus heavily on desire as the main cause of addiction. He sees addiction as a way to fulfill a universal need that all people have. The text focuses on how we all have this need we want met and that we desire to have more in life. The author looks at how through our desire we all fall victims to addiction because of the fall.
Often the issue of addiction causes many negative impacts to a person’s life. This affects the addict’s mind and physiology which may result in negatively impacting their interpersonal relationships with others and work environment. While addiction can range from the use of prescription drugs to illegal narcotics, the addiction that will be focused on is addiction to alcohol. Since the days of “speakeasy’s” and the prohibition era, alcohol has been the topic of conversation among the variety of cultures and socioeconomic status. Alcohol continues to contribute to the lives across generations as evidenced by music. Regardless of the musical genre, artists share their interpretation and experience of alcohol in the lyrics of their
Then is says “leaving its Black tire prints on my foot” (I’m not sure, this is my guess) I believe this might be a metaphor for a bruise that she has on her foot from the man in her bad relationship(stanza 2 line 1). The next lines “and old images, the sound of banging screen/ doors on hot/ afternoons and a fly buzzing over the Kool-Aid spilled on/ the sink/ flicker, as reflections on the metal surface” this is still more of a dark, angry tone that were used in the previous lines(stanza 2-7 lines 1). These lines are just more examples of her bad
The song, “Skyscraper” by Demi Lovato is a rhythmic canticle that incorporates many forms of literary and figurative language to express heartbreak. The artist sang a melody in which melancholy and pain were shown through personification, rhyme, repetition, symbolism, hyperboles, metaphors, and similes. The lyricist writes, “But I’m closer to the clouds up here,” (Lovato 1). This line in stanza five of the song, is an example of both a metaphor and symbolism. This line symbolized elation by showing that clouds were high in the sky much like the spirit of the songwriter. When clouds come to one’s mind, we picture happiness, heaven, enlightenment, and freedom. The scribe used this to symbolize her new and better life as well as emotions. This
The song accomplishes such a thing by taking the approach of a man who knows he is dying, and who takes a nice approach to it. Before the man dies and gets to experience the beauty of heaven, he explains to his loved ones that he doesn't want them to cry for him when he is gone but rather be happy for him. Images of different seasons of the year to explain the process of growing older. Images that depict the fading of light in a persons soul transforming into darkness. Images that the reader can perceive as vivid actions.
Lorde starts out using personification to help her audience visualize while reading; for instance, Lorde states " my skin has betrayed me" (2), which shows her thoughts about the physical part of her adolescence. In addition to, she asked, " how come my knees are always so ashy" (6-7) giving the readers a visual image of her thoughts physically again. However, emotionally she felt neglected by her own mother; " and momma's in the bedroom with the door closed" (10-11) which obviously shows isolation. Lorde continues to express how adolescents tend to feel that they're being judged, " I have to learn how to dance in time for the party" (12-13), "I should have been on the Math Team my marks was better than his" (26-27), " why do I have to be the one wearing braces" (28-30); these stanzas tend to impose that the teenager wanted to fit in and wasn't even noticed.
