"The A Team" is an Indie-folk song written by singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. It was released in 2011, and it was the lead single from his debut album +. The lyrics portray the inside life of a struggling drug addict named Angel, and the negative aspects of the life she is living. Sheeran uses metaphors, imagery and similes in the song to reveal the struggle of addiction. Firstly, Sheeran uses imagery. The first example of this is in the line, "Ripped gloves, raincoat." This line illustrates the broken life Angel is living, and how she uses a "raincoat" to shelter herself from the guilt she feels for allowing her addiction to get to this point. Another example of imagery is “but lately her face seems, slowly sinking, wasting.” This line makes it easy for the audience to visualize a girl with a sickly appearance, much like individuals with a heavy drug addiction. He sings, “White lips, pale face, breathing in snowflakes.” This is symbolism for her taking cocaine, hence the “snowflakes” she is breathing in. Her “white lips” and “pale face” are also an indication of this. Due to the fact that she is a drug addict, she more than likely does not get much sun and her pale skin is a tell-tale sign of this. Another example of symbolism is the line, “An Angel will die, covered in white.” This dark lyric placed at the end of the song is a symbol of Angel eventually passing away due to her addiction. Sheeran used similies to illustrate the inevitable outcome of addiction. In conclusion, Sheeran’s alluring use of imagery, metaphors and simile successfully paints a clear image in the readers head about the grave details of addiction, and to help the listeners realize the importance of making smart, reasonable decisions to fight shy of possibly ending up in the same situation as Angel in the story the lyrics
