Christena CaseyEnglish 2Assessment 3.8Literacy Elements on AshputtleThe story of Ashputtle Translated by Ralph Manneim. Ashputtle's mother passed, Her father remarried, and her 2 step sisters were the worst. However fait has other plans for her. She got the princeand all from staying true to her mothers word. This paper will explore Ashputtle by Ralph Manneim and how the author has used literary elements in creating this beautiful story.Lets talk about the tone. The tone is the writers attitude. The tone of Ashputtle for me was serious, bitter, and heart warming. Ashputtle's mom told her to “be good and say your prayers; good will help you, and I shall look down on you from heaven and always be with you”. Her mother did just that and for that she got everything she could of dreamed of. …show more content…
Just a lovely heart warming story.
Her stepsisters were bitter and always mean. They treated her as if she had a plague and jeered her constantly. You could sense how bad they treated her, they kept her looking sloven. The tone in the end was pure happiness. The setting of the story took place in Ashputtle's house and the royal ball. Her house was a dovecote like it states “the strange girl had slipped into the dovecote”. We know it was a royal ball because in the beginning the story tells us “Now it so happen that the King arranged for a celebration it was to go o for three days and all the beautiful girls in the kingdom were invited, in order that his son might choose a bride.” There was also her mothers grave, but it does not clearly explain where that is. However we know its close and she goes every day. The purpose is what authors hoping to accomplish of communicate in writing the story. The purpose of this story is to teach people to be beautiful on the inside you can be stunning but with a uglyheart, and karma will find you in the end. Keeping positive and praying will keep your soul pure and sweet. Which is why he fell for her in the end. The theme is a general
message. It was similar to the purpose. Don't be ugly on the inside. Those step sisters got no where with their ugly hearts but “blindness to the end of their days for being so wicked and false.”My paper explored Ashputtle by Ralph Manneim, how the author has used literary elements in creating this wonderful story. I explored the tone, setting, purpose, and theme. I hope I helped break down some of the story, It was a fun experience for me. The story was beautifully written, and I prefer it over its modern version Cinderella. Ashputtle in the end showed perfectly how to stay true to yourselfand as her mother put it be good
She was seduced at an early age and then fell in love with a preacher, but was overcome by an exciting younger man. She experienced every form of lust and desire as well as loss. Somehow though all the hardship she was able to come out on the other side a more complete woman and ironically did so without any of these
Here, Alyss learned that she would need to live up to the real world responsibilities that people have to live up to everyday. Once in England, she was staying with a family that constantly tormented her about her claims of living in Wonderland, which caused her to lose faith in the place where she grew up and had to treat her beliefs and childhood as if they did not exist in order to live a normal life. Alyss even said, “Yes, it was a solution… Become just like everyone else.” (148) She began to accept the life of a normal girl and took on responsibilities like getting married. “If she’d had time to think about it, Alice might have stopped herself, considering the idea too whimsical. But the words had a force of their own, and only after she said them aloud did she realize just how appropriate the idea was. ‘Let’s have a masquerade.’” (172) At this point in time, Alyss Heart, or Alice Liddell, had just begun to take on the responsibility that any young adult would take at her
In the story “Ashputtle,” there is a girl named Cinderella. She is the daughter of a rich man and her mother passes away. After she passed away the man remarries to a mean woman who has two daughters. One day the father was going out and asked the girls what they wanted, she had asked for the first branch that hits her father's hat on the way home. She pants the branch on her mother's grave and crys and it
It is so terrible with "A Rose For Emily," the horrible feelings come up immediately when the story ends with two dead bodies in the old and dirty house. One is Homer Barron, Emily's lover. The other is Emily herself. What a pity for a woman like Emily. No, Emily is not really a woman. She is just a child (or a daughter). Since being born, her life was framed strictly by her selfish father." Miss Emily, a slender figure in white in the background, her father a large silhouette in the foreground, his back to her and clutching a horsewhip, the two of them framed by the back-flung front door." Miss Emily could not find her own real life. And then her father died. Everyone in town was very pleased that Emily might have a chance to be happy from then on. But very shortly after the shock of her father's death, Emily had another shock when her sweetheart left her alone and went away. Nobody was expecting that. Poor Emily! She was just a little girl having no experience over thirty years of age. Homer, the young man that everyone believed would marry her, was just a liar, as well. And as a result, Emily killed Homer and lay beside his dead body for years. At the age of forty, Emily was still a child -- an old child with loneliness and unfulfilled soul.
In “Ashputtle”, the main ‘Cinderella’ character, Ashputtle, decides immediately she wants to go to a ball which the prince is throwing. She makes every effort to do so. She prepares her stepsisters while pleading with her stepmother for permission to attend. She secretly calls upon magical animals which she controls, namely birds, to perform her assigned work. When all of this fails to get her to the ball, she resorts to the use of magic again, this time to produce a stunning gown. Upon her arrival, the prince is immediately enamored with Ashputtle. Though the prince is perhaps not the brightest man, he a valuable and powerful asset for any poorer woman to be associated with. After placing the prince under the spell of her beauty and charming , Ashputtle fearlessly uses magic to inform the prince he has retrieved the wrong bride.
The reason I chose to analyze “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner is because I am a lover of suspense and terror. The story totally caught my attention because the general tone is one of violence, gloom, and terror. The setting also plays an important role because it gives the reader a better understanding of the different situations. The main character, Emily, plays the role of a tragic figure that seems to be seen only from the outside. Sometimes people judge others from the outside, but they do not realize about the inside of the person. In the story, Emily is constantly judged by the townspeople because of her physical appearance, but they do not understand what she is going through emotionally. Another important character in the story is “Homer Baron” who plays an important role because he becomes Miss Emily’s lover. Moreover, the story is divided into five sections made up of several suspenseful events. Many speculations are made by different literary critics regarding Emily’s character; her lover “Homer Baron”; the meaning of a hidden watch she had in her pocket regarding her progress in life as time passed by; and the setting of the story.
Anne Sexton’s poem “Cinderella” is filled with literary elements that emphasize her overall purpose and meaning behind this satirical poem. Through the combination of enjambment stanzas, hyperboles, satire, and the overall mocking tone of the poem, Sexton brings to light the impractical nature of the story “Cinderella”. Not only does the author mock every aspect of this fairy tale, Sexton addresses the reader and adds dark, cynical elements throughout. Sexton’s manipulation of the well-known fairy tale “Cinderella” reminds readers that happily ever after’s are meant for storybooks and not real life.
When she is selling their house and she hears the Walkers planning renovations, she “feels a moment’s panic, a protective instinct, wanting to retract her for, wanting the house to remain as it’s always been, as her husband had last seen it” (Lahiri 275). Ashima wants to preserve their home on Pemberton road, and keep it the same ways as it had been when Ashoke and she first moved in to start their new life in America. Over time, Ahima has developed a connection with Pemberton Road because this was the home that she inhabited along with Ashok, before his untiley death. This house contains so many memories, not of her childhood, but of the life they had started together. Ashima then reflects that she has learned to do things on her own...she is not the same Ashima who had once lived in Calcutta” (Lahiri 276). Ashima has become more independent in America, not being able to depend on her husband or her family to take care of her. Ashima then feels “suddenly lonely, horrible permanently alone…(because) she will miss her job at the library, the women with whom she’s worked...miss throwing parties...miss living with her daughter” (Lahiri 279). In this moment, Ashima realizes that she will miss her life in America because of the connections she has formed with the people there, at her work, with her friends, and with her children. Ashima reflects that
Although she had a very strong mind, she was a bit foolish and ignorant for she sought out to have a marriage life, but her morals of being married was absurd. She did not want to marry someone for love, but more so to an idea, of course she wanted a man of status, but more than that, she wants a man of a certain name, a man by the name of Earnest, regardless of his morals and who he truly is, all that mattered was the name Earnest. She could not see herself in a marriage with a man of an ordinary name such as Jack or John. Simple names like those were too ordinary and for a man that possessed them in her mind that made them plain and nothing was special about
Upon the Maidens coming of age, she was bombarded with favours from her numerous admirers; all of whom she shunned. For as beautiful as she was, the Maiden felt she could afford to be fastidious and pernickety in her choosing of a mate.
As result of the death of the husband and the son the Mother becomes more isolated because we can identify when the neighbor mentions that mother only rarely leaves her own house to visit friends or do errands. Also, the emotional alienation in the Mother’s case, due to the murders of her husband and son because that affect a lot to her. Meanwhile, the characters in the play frequently discuss the isolation of the Bride’s farmhouse from the rest of the town and how far is everything for her . The emotional alienation in the Bride’s case, due to the pressure to marry because everybody was exited for the marriage of her and they repeat to her the same thing. Also, how Maid and Bridegroom pressure her with the orange blossoms because it represents the purity, chastity, innocence on the
She had/ A heart -- how shall I say? -- too soon made glad,/ Too easily impressed; she liked whate 'er/ She looked on, and her looks went everywhere" (19-24). She is too easy to be impressed, which she would be pleased by a very cheap painter with high paid. The Duke hated that beside himself, she acts the same courtesy with any other people. He is resented that he give her the name of nine hundred years old but in return with the smile and attention as the same as any other people. He put an end to it, "Oh, sir, she smiled, no doubt,/ Whene 'er I passed her; but who passed without/ Much the same smile? This grew; I gave commands;/ Then all smiles stopped together" (43-46). This might means that the Duke kills his wife and smashes her spirit into a
Did you know that many children as well as adults cannot read? Statistics show that if they have the resources they need that reading can be enhanced. For my senior project I plan to do an extensive book drive for educators to assist children as well as adults still in school learn to read by providing proper books for daycares, elementary schools and adult learning centers to use. After receiving authorization from the following facilities, I will set up boxes and bins at places such as Publix, different public schools, and my parent’s work. In order to spread the word of my project, I will make posters and advertisements to station at local businesses. I will aim to get in contact with a local radio station and see if they can advertise where listeners can contribute books to my cause.
What exactly is illiteracy? An adult or adults with a reading incapacity, a lack of knowledge of a subject, and/or a error in speech or writing according to Encarta World English Dictionary is a person or persons with illiteracy. Ronald Nash the author of an on-line article entitled “The Three Kinds of Illiteracy” he describes the three different types of illiteracy. Nash explains in detail cultural, moral, and functional illiteracy in his article. Cultural illiteracy defined by E.D. Hirsch Jr. is to possess the basic information needed to thrive in the modern world (Nash). Moral illiteracy is not being taught or lacked the education and understandings in religious or spiritual beliefs (Nash). Functional illiteracy refers to the inability of an individual to use reading, speaking, writing, and computational skills in everyday life (Literacy Center for the Midlands). Functional illiteracy is probably the most familiar and known to the public out of the three.
How does illiteracy affect our society? Illiteracy is a big problem in our society, even though it does not seem like it. It is affecting our society drastically both socially and economically. Illiterate individuals are endangering themselves in their daily survival. Also, literacy is something that we need nowadays to survive in society. Reading and writing are some of the most important skills that humans need in their everyday lives, so it is important that they obtain literacy in their early development. Most of the people in our society do not have the opportunity to be literate in their life time. It is important that the government reach out to those people who do not have the opportunity to be literate. Illiteracy is an ongoing critical
