Is Ignorance Bliss or Is it Better to be Knowledgeable? Ignorance and knowledge are quite different factors in life, which one is a better mind set to have? Ignorance and knowledge are clearly different. To the public eye knowledge is better than ignorance, by under circumstances knowing things can be annoying to other people. Daniel Keyes had written a short story “Flowers for Algernon” this short story is a tale of a mentally challenged man named Charlie Gordon who had wanted to become smarter like the rest of his peers. His adult school teacher volunteers him for an experiment that might just do that for him. He is chosen for the operation and the operation is later done. In the story, Keyes describes “Now I know what it means when they say "to pull a Charlie Gordon." I'm ashamed.” This quote leads us to a major advantage to being knowledgeable. Being knowledgeable can help you know vital information. Whether it be telling whether the friends you have are real or not based on what they do for you and analyzing it or just knowing where to take shelter from a hurricane and even knowing what a test is on so you know what to study. If you are ignorant you can fall down a hole of being used like Charlie Gordon maybe not to the extent he was like when “Then I dont remember so good but I think I got sleepy or sick. A nice cop brot me back home. Thats what my landlady Mrs Flynn says. But I got a headache and a big lump on my head and black and blue all over. Charlie when the scientist who carried out the operation and experiment did to the best of their abilities could not because of their lack of intelligence that they need. They had limitations. But Charlie at the peak of his intelligence could. He had to carry out this experiment where he was only to be the test subject. He finds out this will end with his end. His ignorance kicks in here and he refuses it. Instead of living his life to the fullest he weeps and moans. “I wouldn't open the door and I told him to go away. I want to be left to myself. I have become touchy and irritable. I feel the darkness closing in. It's hard to throw off thoughts of suicide. I keep telling myself how important this introspective jour·nal will be” (Keyes 302). Knowledge can be the key to success and can lead people to happier life. However, there are some instances that you can not gain any more knowledge because of how it would change your whole life. The drive of wanting more and more knowledge is best portrayed through two well -known books. In Mary Shelley’s, Frankenstein, and in Daniel Keyes, Flowers for Algernon, both the creature and Charlie are ostracized by society because they are different from everyone else but this distinction gave way for distinct fallouts because of their quest for knowledge beyond their reach to achieve happiness.
Our knowledge is a key to our success and happiness in our life to give us personal satisfaction. Knowledge is power but not always. Sometimes our self-awareness and growth as an individual gives us negative thoughts that make us want to go back to undo it. Everyone wants to unlearn a part in our life that brought us pain and problems. The movie “PRECIOUS KNOWLEDGE” is about the state of Arizona banning ethnic studies. The movie’s main focus is on Tucson High school, specifically the class known as the Mexican American/Raza Studies. They learned about the honest truths about America along with their own culture. However, many politicians saw this class as un-American and “Stalinist”. This movie showed that the students became thriving adults because they were able to learn about their own cultures. During a political meeting, many politicians felt like this was an unnecessary class that was wasting their tax dollars. Throughout the history of mankind there have been numerous cases in which people were victims of oppression or hate. Among these cases the sole reasoning behind this oppression or hate being based on the perception of others. History has shown that society is responsible for labeling groups of people, generally these labels are misleading.

The methods that available in the production of knowledge are limited by the ethical judgments, but the definition of whether the method is ethical or not depends on a couple different things. The first one is the personal judgments. Each person would have different judgments for the same method. However, one personal based judgment cannot be universal. The second one is the social judgment. It is related to the personal judgment. When a personal opinion for a method is agreed by most of people in the society, this opinion would become a social judgment.
Not only does ignorance have a negative impact on people, it is also “the root and stem of all evil” (Plato), which can destroy a person. To start off, self-superiority can cloud a person’s judgment; making it evident that intelligence can easily be lost to arrogance. To add on, anger and the human tendency to make rash decisions can also contribute to ignorance, resulting in eventual downfall. Ignorance is the term used to describe someone who doesn’t know about something. Ignorance may sound familiar as it is used in the proverb, “Ignorance is Bliss”. According to the dictionary, “Not knowing something is often more comfortable than knowing it” (Dictionary 1). The banker lacks the knowledge of the prisoner, and he lacks the prisoner’s time and ability to think over materialism, but the banker has what the prisoner doesn’t, which is emotion. The two characters are both ignorant in their own ways. The prisoner lacks emotional depth while the banker lacks intelligence. Whoever is right is up to the reader and their own views on life.
But when we consider ignorance along with agnosticism which is a mode of the intellective process, there is an obvious contradiction. Because ignorance is not just mere lack of a knowing, conversely, every ignorance is always a process of being ignorant of something quite precise. In other words, one who ignores knows in a particular form what it is that he ignores. For example, a person who has no knowledge on economics is not ignorant of what a Cobb-Douglas equation is, because he lacks information to such equations. Only the man who is told about Cobb-Douglas equations, and does not know what we are talking about because he does not understand the meaning of the words, only then is this man ignorant of what a Cobb-Douglas equation is.
In this paper I will explain what objective knowledge is and why we can have objective knowledge. I will clearly define several key terms that are crucial to this discussion. With these definitions in mind, I will explain the necessity of objective knowledge for reason and reality. Then, I will outline and expound on a reduction absurdum argument, explaining the contradictory postulate and exposing a contradiction. Finally, I will describe the view of Global Skepticism, and show how the Global Skeptic lives in opposition to his or her outlook. Through these arguments, it will be apparent that logic and reality demand the existence of objective knowledge.
