The central theme of “The Angel of the Odd” by Edgar Allan Poe illustrates the ignorance towards new ideas through character actions and plot events. The key theme of the short story is how the man with little common sense becomes corrupted by abnormal events. The man also did not believe in the angel that visited him or the extraordinary accidents throughout London, leading to the quote from the angel “a lot of happiness and little common sense.” Despite the man’s ignorance, he finally modifies his views on current suggestions while giving respect to the angel. The main characters expressed anger towards the man, knowing nothing of why the death of the man made him feel angry, the character also had different characteristics that elaborate ignorance. The characteristics that the main character has, are thinking he is better than anyone else and being invincible. For example, the primary character quoted in the short story “is a contemptible falsehood -- a poor hoax -- the lees of the invention of some pitiable penny-a-liner -- of some wretched concoctor of accidents in Cocaigne.”. The quotation by the main character talks about the recent death that took place in London and how the new ideas were reckless, which were the main causes of the abnormal accidents. The plot events are another explanation for the direct theme of ignorance, which describes the character actions within the plot. For example, the leading character insulted the angel and caused anger to boil up within the angel. since the angel became angry, he committed an idea to prove themselves of the capability of causing the abnormal accidents.
