Most authors write stories with the intention of having people to find deeper meanings and hidden messages in the text. Figuring out the literary elements and breaking down the structure of the text is called analyzing the text. This can be done with every literary piece whether it is a novel or a sonnet. Gabriel Garcia Marquez was am author who literary critics heavily analyzed his work. One of his short stories “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” has been heavily analyzed by literary critics around the world. They have all found common themes especially when discussing the angel. Everyone thinks to be such a superior spiritual being one has to be adorned in untarnished clothing, cannot be physically harmed, and know the language of the church. The author shows that all this is meaningless. He shows us that being an angel just requires to follow the footsteps of God. Our actions outweigh other people’s opinion of someone (A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings 1). Jesus is a prime example of the author’s message. Jesus never showed anger towards those that hurt him and mocked him while he was on the cross. Instead he showed extreme patience just like the angel in “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”. The image of the angel caged in the farm being devalued by others is a more complete image of an angel. It shows qualities that a mere human, or a demon does not possess (A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings 1). This imagery has a close connection to the tone of the story regarding human nature. The beginning scenes set up the setting to sound gloomy with a bad storm. The tone has sympathetic qualities when the author describes the scene of Pelayo finding the angel at the crash site.
