How does the amount of information known by someone affect decisions made by that person? Based on a survey by The National Interest, thirty-one percent of Americans could not name the Vice President of America, and that is where they live. The amount of ignorance displayed in America is scary seeing how it could explain why things have happened in the past, and possibly could've prevented them. It is believed that the amount of propaganda used is probably the best explanation for why most Americans are oblivious to the events happening in society; but what does this mean for America? Ignorance is harmful to America since it allows the people to be blinded and deceived by not only the government of the country they live in, but they governments of other countries also; which could ultimately prevent the people from not only being able to react to situations, but to keep them from occurring in the first place also.

Ignorance has been accepted in America in many ways, one being the law. “In most countries the law recognizes that a person who acts in ignorance of the facts of his action should not be held criminally responsible” (Britannica Encyclopedia). This means that it is okay to do wrong as long as the person doesn't know that it is wrong, because he/she is uninformed about the situation not the law that he/she will get away with it. With this system being based on trust, and not the physical proof that the person was unaware it allows the law to be deceived and allows possible criminals to abscond. The law says that “when the defendant has in good ...

...ean. If Americans can’t judge then why are they always fighting with homosexuals and implying that if you are not heterosexual, then you are not a part of the superior race. Why fight when loving is easier.
Fighting is one of the most dominant forms of ignorance shown in America. Showing dominance through physical contact makes Americans look as if they are weak minded and they are too stubborn and unwilling to make changes necessary to create peace with the nation. This allows foreigners to go into the country, and to take advantage of the weak areas of America. This is caused by constant internal fighting when the real enemies are outside of the borders. This also allows politicians to pull a shade over the American’s eyes so that they are unaware to see current situations because they are too busy arguing and competing with one another.

Twelve Angry Men, is a play written by Reginald Rose. The play is about the process of individuals and a court case, which is determining the fate of a teenager. It presents the themes of justice, independence and ignorance. Rose emphasises these three themes through the characters and the dialogue. Justice is the principle of moral rightness or equity. This is shown through juror number eight who isn’t sure whether or not the boy is actually innocent or guilty, but he persists to ask questions and convinces the other jurors to think about the facts first. Independence is shown through both juror number three and ten. They both believe that the defendant is guilty until they both realise that they can not relate there past experiences with the court case. Ignorance is shown throughout all the jurors during the play, it is also brought out through the setting of the play.
What we’ve discussed previously is all on the presupposition, in which we assume that all citizens want to acknowledge the truth. However, what if citizens don’t want the truth or What if people is incapable of burdening the truth? In those cases, ignorance could be a blessing. Like the allegory of the cave in Book VII, those people who get out of the cave is blind by the light, and they need time to “adjust before he could see things in the world above”(Grube, p188, 516a). Similarly, knowing the truth is actually a painful process and it takes time for people to understand. Not everyone could or even want to experience this pain instead they prefer to stay in the dark cave. Even in Snowden’s case, it is true that there is a large proportion of people are willing to sacrifice part of their own freedom and accept government surveillance. Simply because by giving up this proportion of freedom, they could live their old-happy and safe lives. They have no interest to know the true or to burden themselves with those pains and responsibilities. Thus, for them letting government to bear both responsibility of fighting against evil and the pains of hiding secrets seems to be a win-win case. Therefore, for them falsehood is a necessary
The face of American democracy is deceptive; from missionary trips to military tours, America has established a presence in the Middle East, and has always projected itself to be the perfect image of a democratic and free nation where everyone is equal. While America tries to up hold their motto of being the land of the free, American media has presented Arabs as unintelligent and violent people. Because of the way America presents itself to the rest of the world, one would be surprised if they traveled to America only to find violence and ignorance amongst its government and citizens. While Western civilization believes itself to be on a higher level than Eastern civilization, this orientalist view blinds America from seeing the similarities

Ignorance and vanity can be good, in small amounts, but too much can lead to very unwelcome consequences. Connie, a teenage girl who can’t get enough of herself, learned this the hard way when a strange man by the name of Arnold Friend arrives at her house with the intent of taking her on a ‘date’. Instead of calling the police or locking herself in, like common sense would imagine, Connie uneasily greets Arnold from her door when he gets out of his car, instantly letting her vanity and ignorance get the best of her. Joyce Carol Oates shocks the reader with the twist ending in her short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been” in which after hearing Arnold’s threat towards her family, Connie hands herself over to Arnold allowing him
Throughout the history of mankind there have been numerous cases in which people were victims of oppression or hate. Among these cases the sole reasoning behind this oppression or hate being based on the perception of others. History has shown that society is responsible for labeling groups of people, generally these labels are misleading.
Samuel Johnson quote, "Ignorance, when voluntary, is criminal," can be interpreted in many ways while still having the same base meaning. My interpretation of the quote is when one does something that he or she knows is wrong or does something without gaining full knowledge about the action and the consequences of that action, the level of ignorance that person obtains should be considered a crime. When a person knowingly does something that can harm oneself and other people or things around him or her, that person’s action should consider criminal. The level of ignorance that person has to his or self, personal safety and safety for others is dangerous and should not be accept in society. For example, people who smoke in public places, such
“Ignorance of facts” simply means that the education is there but this generation just chooses not to use it. According to one of my sources, 56 percent of 18-to 29-year-olds have low knowledge levels while only 22 percent of 50-to 64-year-olds did. This shows that today’s age knows less than half of what previous generations know. With this much access to education, technology, books and documents that this generation has, the percentile should be much lower than that. In this day and age, people are more focused on social media sites than getting their head in the books. People would rather see false accusations and false information on websites such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and so forth instead of picking up a newspaper and reading what truly occurred. The world we live in today is nothing compared to past generations. There is so much knowledge in our elders that has failed to be passed on the the youth, it’s nonsensical. Knowledge is power and if we want to help the next generations become more intelligent, we need a great deal of power.
Racism is increasingly seen as a potent cause towards the health of ethnic minorities. Increased interest in this issue has led a growing number of researchers to investigate the correlation of racism and health outcomes. Ethnicity, a socially constructed concept, sees individuals with a common background or culture belonging to a particular group. This results in individuals using ethnicity to represent themselves in relation to others, especially in the presence of other ethnic individuals. However, racism arises when external gestures are made from individuals who show superiority and preference for their own cultural background, due to biological descent. Racism is a problem faced by many ethnic minority groups, resulting in inequalities that lead towards negative health outcomes.
Have you ever been picked on or made fun of because your nationality is different from someone else’s or the color of your skin? If so, then the person who did it was probably a racist person. Racism still exists within all cultures. Some people won’t admit they’re a racist, but their actions and words prove otherwise. Most people won’t directly discriminate other races, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen everyday.
Racism has often played a central role in conflicts between groups of people. Racism is the intentional or unintentional use of power to isolate, separate and exploit others as defined in the Webster dictionary. People generally respond to others differently based on what they know, which may include superficial characteristics often associated with race. This paper will express my opinion of how racism will effect America. I will base information from Webster’s definition of Racism, reading assigned for the course, and some of my own ideas on ways to overcome this obstacle as a nation.
“Oppression, to divide and conquer is your goal. Oppression, I swear hatred is your home. Oppression, you mean only harm.” -Ben Harper
The veil of ignorance means to not know how specific deliberations will affect ones over a particular case and being obliged to evaluate evaluate principles solely on the basis of the general considerations. These people characterize things into two groups. Things that they do not know and are ignored, and things that they must know. Things that they often ignore consist of class positions, social statuses, distribution of goods, and natural assets and abilities. Things within the veil of ignorance that usually known are basic features of human social life, understanding political affairs, principles of economic theories, philosophy, and social organizations. The people incharge of taking a stand on the original position then often use these as a guide to make decisions on new laws and other necessities of a
Last quarter, we had many robbers around campus. So during the night, there were many cops walking along High street to try their best to protect students. However, most cops tended to stop blacks and ask them where they were going and why they hung out so late at night. Why do people suspect blacks? There must be a reason. Some people may say that most students reported that blacks attacked them. But there were several cases showed that the robbers were whites. In my opinion, prejudice might be the reason why the police suspect blacks around school. “Prejudice is a negative attitude toward an entire category of people, often an ethnic or racial minority.” (Schaefer, 2008, p. 248) Even though the emancipation of slaves happened hundred years ago, prejudice and bias still remain in this society. We might dislike our roommate because he or she talks really loud and does not shower. And it is considered prejudice. However, if we stereotype him or she based on race or religions, it is a form of prejudice. It is true that we tend to define other people from our own perspectives. If prejudice forms, it may affect people’s behaviors. But what can prejudice lead to? How prejudice forms? And are there any methods that we can use to reduce prejudices? When it comes to prejudice, we may first think about discrimination and ethnocentrism, which are the negative effects of prejudice. Prejudices can result in discrimination and it may result from ethnocentrism. Besides, prejudice and bias result from subjects we do not know. And we can reduce prejudices.
The Microsoft Encarta dictionary defines greed as "an overwhelming desire to have more of something such as money than is actually needed." This definition cannot be argued with for it is plain and simple, giving the essence of the word. But to millions, perhaps billions of people, greed is something else. Some people portray greed as being qualities of the evil, selfish, and corrupt. Although these viewpoints may be partially true, greed cannot be condemned as solely being an escapee of Pandora's Box. Let us agree that greed is pursuing actions guided by rational self-interest. This means that anything outside food and water acquired at the cost of anyone else, no matter little they are affected can be defined as greed. Greed is a driving force of the world's wellbeing; all attempts to eliminate greed from humanity have ended up as disasters. Nearly all inventions of today and days past are the offspring of greedy people. Most jobs and societies are created because of greed since it is a motivator and pushes people to try and do their best. It is greed that encourages the consumer to purchase the best product at the cheapest price, thus creating market forces that help in eliminating inefficiency and waste. Greed is an asset to humanity, a tool that some are able to embrace and prosper by better than others.
