A Direction for Directing My first camera gave me a direction for my future, along with the guidance of two inspiring teachers and the insightful films by Ingmar Bergman. Freshman year, I reluctantly took Video Journalism, but in this class I had discovered that I enjoyed recording and editing videos. The next three years I spent in Video Yearbook embedded my desire to move forward in the field of cinematography and film/video production. Additionally, I am fascinated by the creation of movies and the stories they tell. The art of a film coming together is both, exciting and complicated. His career has influenced my future endeavors. Ingram grew up in a strict household in Sweden. He saw his first theater at age 12 and with that he was able to escape his thoughts by making dolls and performing his own puppet theaters (Liukkonen). Bergman left home at 17 to begin his career in stage performances, radio productions, feature films, and television productions. Bergman did attend the University of Stockholm, which likely had a profound effect on his success. He eventually was awarded a doctorate from Stockholm also. Beginning in the 1940’s until his death in 2007, Ingmar directed more than 60 films (Baxter). Bergman was able to make the most of his films without spending much. He could also get the films done fast. This could be do to his repeated use of the same handful of actors and locations for his films. It is rare that he traveled outside of Sweden. Rainer thought “ with his unprecedented, conspiratorial intimacy, his great stock company of actors incarnate his tortures. Those handful of actors performed in most of his later chamber films. Of course, his stunning works earned Bergman numerous accords. At the Cannes Film Festival, he won for his film “The Seventh Seal”. Additionally, he received his first Academy nomination for a screenplay called “Wild Strawberries”. He eventually went on to be given the Best Film Oscar for “The Virgin Spring”. What’s more, Bergman received three more Oscar nominations from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Besides being recognized for his films, Ingmar had a quality that set him apart from others in the movie industry. Mainly, Bergman was known for his close-up shots. Woody Allen a well known actor, comedian, filmmaker and playwright wrote that Bergman had “put his camera on faces for unconscionable periods of time while actors and actresses wrestled with their anguish” (1).
