Diversity plays an important role in education in this multicultural country. Professors from different countries with different cultures and with different experiences are important in this country’s education because they have many experiences and knowledge to share. The interaction between professors and students help students to understand and to be adapted to diversity in a faster way. As the book mentions, success stories are around us and within us (Bucher, 2015). If I were in Mary’s situation I would do almost the same thing she does. I would put more effort to understand the teacher and study the concepts that I do not understand during class at home. An individual with a diversity consciousness well developed, can be more successful academically (Bucher, 2015). I would view the class as a good scenario to develop my diversity skills and I would view the professor as an important source of knowledge.
If I were in Mary’s situation I would say to my classmates that they should be honest with themselves and recognized that they do not have the skill of adaptation. that in college there are teachers from different countries that speak English with a very pronounced accent, and they should accept and adapt to the way they teach. They should look for the best way to work with the language barrier instead of judge and blame the teacher that he does not know his subject matter. Mary’s classmates need to develop the skills of communication, teamwork and social networking in order to be more successful.
They need to communicate with the teacher and let him know what is not working in his class. Also, they should communicate between them to ask for help when they are struggling to understand the teacher. Teamwork is other skill that Mary’s classmates should work with. They should work together and share what they have understood during class and enrich their knowledge with the help of each other. They also should develop the skill of social networking because they can communicate and ask for help when they need it. diversity. I know that in my own practice I might find many problems about diversity. Now I know that I have to be more conscious about my students learning styles and base on that I have to plan my classes. I have to offer my students an education based on their needs. In addition, I have to develop diversity skills, teamwork skills with diversity groups, and develop a critical thinking about diversity. I want them to learn all those thing in order to prepare them to college and to be success at work.
Ironically, one of the “catch-22” takeaways from the overall exchange program and from the final reflection conference was that as much of a great and insightful experience it was to experience a completely different culture or perhaps be exposed to a diversity of cultures all at once, it also reinforced this idea of “difference” and “separateness.” All in all, though, the student-exchange program provided a taste for open-mindedness, awareness and hope for the future, and also a vision for what a multicultural world could truly be like without prejudices and racism. Like for example, in page 54-55 of the book, it is showed how Shirley was trying to become friend with the other kids, but her poor knowledge of English and her misinterpretation of common norms obstructed her of do that. They suggested that teachers needed to go beyond practicing multiculturalism in the classroom, they need to embrace it as a modicum of everyday life and find ways to get involved in organizations and events that encourage social justice. The techniques suggested by the authors were realistic and easy to implement in the classroom. The authors acknowledge that though white educators will experience some difficulties in teaching cross-cultural courses, these difficulties should not discourage them from teaching multicultural content. This article should be a required reading for all multicultural courses because it can provide a sense of enlightenment for all students, regardless of their cultural backgrounds. The United States is expecting drastic changes in the diversity of its population over the next 50 years. Minorities will become a larger portion of the country’s population. Changes will need to be made to the way our country operates, especially in education. New, innovative and inclusive ways of teaching will replace traditional methods. For these new changes to go smoothly, steps will be taken to implement diverse populations in schools, helping students benefit from the values of other cultures while learning to live along side each other.
