Ideological Beliefs in the United States Tricia Harris, Holly Koperski, and Endri Kambo Ideological Beliefs in the United States The United States political ideological landscape can be thought of as a spectrum, with liberals on the left and conservatives on the right. This terminology is familiar, and many refer to “the left” or “right wing” when describing political ideology. There is also another division of the spectrum as well. This includes economic issues at one end and social issues at the other. The economic question deals with how much the government should be involved in economic issues and whether the market should be regulating itself. These programs allow low to no-cost solutions for qualified individuals which are subsidized by taxes. Economic liberals may also support “healthcare for all”, Economic liberals support other safety net programs as well, such as housing subsidies for the poor and job training (Barbour & Wright, 2015, pg 47). These types of programs help underprivileged people keep or get housing and gain skills needed for employment, and are subsidized by the government as well. A subset of economic conservatives which are on the extreme end of the conservative spectrum are known as libertarians. Libertarians are people who strictly believe in very small government intervention in all areas and spheres. In addition to this, economic conservatives and libertarians blame the government for its own pitfalls and problems because they think that the government overuses its constitutional checks and balances. Due to this fact, libertarians strongly believe that there are many limiting factors that the United States has over exerting its power and this causes the government’s withdrawal of power over many aspects of economics and
