I chose this three characteristics based on the responsibility of the teams that is to find innovative solutions to their clients’ problems. These three characteristics are key to a project team at IDEO because IDEO is a company corporate philosophy is that teamwork improves innovation and creativity. To improve innovation and creativity a team must be diverse, be able to communicate and resolved their own conflicts. According to Forbes.com, diversity is “critical for organization’s ability to innovate and adapt to a fast-changing environment.” In addition, in a Forbes study found that workforce diversity and inclusion as a key driver of internal innovation and business growth. With the high rate of turnover, we would need to find a way to lower that and make sure the employees are feeling like they are valuable members of the business. I predict that I would find out that the employees don’t feel that they are treated well enough and getting rewarded for their liking. I think that they feel undervalued and disrespected and that causes the high turnover. I would recommend to the executives that they sit down and meet with their employees and figure out ways to better the relationship between management and the
Creativity: I believe that the members of the team must be dedicated to reflecting upon the lessons learned in the experience and using those insights gained for continuous improvement of their own work and the functioning of the team.
IDEO faces the decision of whether it should shortcut its product development process to meet a client’s time frame, or request a product launch extension so that IDEO has enough time to carry out a complete development process. IDEO’s client, Handspring, has requested that IDEO create a competitor to the Palm V, which IDEO helped to develop. IDEO faces the task of reconfiguring a palm-like product that meets Handspring’s desire to provide a lower-cost palm product with interchangeable cards and an enhanced design aesthetic that will appeal to a larger customer base. Dennis Boyle, former team leader on the Palm V project and soon-to-be leader on the Visor project, must decide whether or not to commit to Handspring’s short development timespan, which would inevitably lead to development shortcuts.
The business model for IDEO began as an open-minded place to design, develop and manufacture new products. The last 20 years of proven product design driven by innovation has translated into profit margins for their clients and continuous refinement for IDEO’s process. IDEO pioneered “concurrent engineering” where design and engineering work together to produce aesthetically pleasing products that are also highly functional. This was different from many other similar companies that placed more emphasis on the industrial design than the engineering. IDEO’s strengths grew out of the ability to master this ability with high tech clients. Corporations came to IDEO because they had a proven system of developing the best products through using their key ingredients for innovative strategy.
As the processes and systems used in business have become more complex, teams, not individuals, have become popular in many organizations. Teams are made up of individuals from an organization brought together to solve a problem, improve a process or implement a new process. “A major advantage that a team has over an individual is its diversity of resources and ideas” (Burns, 1995, p. 52). However, this diversity can cause conflict within the team. The success of the team is strongly influenced by the team’s ability to recognize the causes of, manage and resolve conflict.
The competencies of the team is about the team ability to respond and solve problems, ability to communicate, solve problem or manage conflicts, and ability to make decisions. It is important for the team to create an environment that allows its members to articulate their goals. It is important that team members ensure and understand how their work contributes towards team goals. Also team member should make effective necessary decisions; communicate with other team members; give and receive necessary feedback; form trust; and resolve conflicts or disagreements.
It means design specific cognitive activities and application of those ideas during the process of designing. IDEO team uses Divergent and Convergent thinking in all the phases. Through divergent thinking, they have a broad set of ideas which are then funneled with convergent thinking.
The overall success for IDEO’s comes from the aspects of organizational process, culture and management. IDEO is an overall outstanding product development firm which helps organizations design products, environments, digital experiences and even services. The company does so through design thinking “methodology”. In other words, IDEO has a design philosophy as a role of prototyping. IDEO has as proven to be doing a spectacular job at designing products and services for these organization considering that they have designed over thousands of products.
In a team-oriented setting, everyone contributes to how well the group succeeds overall. You work with fellow members of the group to complete the work that needs to be done. Having the right people in the correct roles is an important factor in measuring the success of a team, where you are united with the other members to complete the main goals. Every group is made up of definite strengths and weaknesses. Our team's 3-5 major strengths necessary to work accordingly consist of Informer, Summarizer, Orienter, Piggy-Backer, and Encourager. One of our strengths as a team is that we get input from everyone involved. Every member of our team is a leader in some way. Part of being a good leader is knowing how important it is to receive the best ideas from each member of their team. We attend group meetings where we discuss any challenges, issues, and problems. At these meetings, we often exchange ideas or brainstorm new ones with each other and come up with the best and most creative team solutions as potential answers to those perceived problems.
Effective communication encompasses many concepts. For a leader to be effective, one must be able to build relationships between different parties. In order to build a good rapport, one must be able to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of those involved, and within oneself. Acknowledging these differences will allow for a better collaboration between team members. A leader must also have the ability to put conflict resolution theories into practice. Allowing differing points of view may challenge the original idea and will make for a more thorough decision making process. Although this may seem counterproductive, it actually ensures the best possible outcome. One must be consistent in the message presented yet be flexible, approachable and maintain a positive attitude. Allowing for different perspectives to be heard will allow team members to feel valued. This flexibility helps to solidify the concept that everyone is in this together; thus establishing an environment where all team members can have a buy-in. Encouraging team members to voice opinions and give feedback produces an atmosphere of constructive give-and-take; a real t...
How the team overcame conflict and obstacles? How the final project or task was completed. Some recommendations for success would be support. Management needs to be supportive from the beginning throughout the groups development process. The team should know the manager is behind the concept of the team and supports their
Why This High Turnover is Damaging Your Business High employee turnover is not only an annoyance, but it can, and possibly already had, damaged your business greatly. (1) I would like to create an optimum work environment by demonstrating collaborative behavior myself. This will inspire my team to follow or model the same behavior (Gratton and Erickson, 2007). (2) I will also allow myself adequate time daily to coach my team on the basis of creativity and innovation to improve business performance (Coutu and Beschloss, 2009). I will give clear direction to my team as to where we are going as a team together. According to Coutu & Beschloss (2009) unless the leader provides a clear direction, there is a real risk that different members will pursue different plans. That is why it is important to articulate a clear direction for my team to makse that everyone is on the same page as we’re moving forward (Coutu and Beschloss, 2009). (3) I will establish a sense of community – When people feel a sense of inclusivity, they are more likely to reaching out to others and share their knowledge to improve effective collaboration in a creative and innovative way (Gratton and Erickson,
Skills and knowledge possessed by every member is also important for a team to become high performance. Although it is among the most important factors, however, it must be coupled with a good working relationship with every team member and good collaboration with every team member. The members who possess the good skills and wide knowledge will be a useful resource to the team if that team member can share their strengths with the other team members and vice versa. It is usually misconstrued that having skillful and intelligent team members is already enough to make a team work right. This kind of thinking is the reason why most teams, despite all of those competent members they have, fail to achieve their goals. A team should establish one common goal, not to think that way and develop a good working relationship with each member. (retrieved from: http://www.strictlysuccess.com, August 18, 2005) This can be done by self awareness exercises, like the DISC assessment and other assessments or any other kind of self awareness exercises regarding communication style differences. Then these factors and important pieces of information should be taken into full consideration before the actual project is begun. These exercise or assessments can be great ice breakers and mark the difference between a group of individuals merely assigned to a team, as opposed to functioning as...
