There are many facets that can either make or break someone as a “hero”. In literature, a hero does not necessarily have to be a knight in shining armor, a caped crusader, or an exact replica of the archetype but, there are certain qualities and expectations that determine what makes a hero. A typical hero has strength, appeal, courage, righteousness, and success, meaning that they have the physical and mental capabilities that can lead them to eventually achieve their goals. In most cases, the protagonist of a story is the hero, but this is not true in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. Set in Sleepy Hollow, the story chronicles schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane’s, time and sudden disappearance from the “haunted” town. Seemingly the “good guy” and hero of the story, it is made apparent that Ichabod is a man of many faults which undermine this surface assumption. Ichabod’s gangly and bird-like physique is the first indication that he is not cut out to be the triumphant hero. In the face of danger, a hero stands up with bravery while Ichabod shrinks back from mythical tales and superstitions. Likewise, the simple fact of being morally upright is challenged by Ichabod’s overwhelming greed. Affirming his lack of heroism is the story’s conclusion in which Ichabod’s overactive imagination was so prevalent that it clouded his sense of reality and caused his downfall and failure. In “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”, Ichabod Crane is shown to be an anti-hero through his mere physical description, cowardice and greed, and ultimately destructive imagination, all of which completely contradict the traits that make a true hero.

The stories about trivial things such as ghosts, witches, and particularly the headless horseman excite, but ultimately terrify Ichabod. Similarly, the simple rivalry between him and Brom Bones for Katrina Van Tassel’s affection causes him to shy away from confrontation. His pursuit of Katrina is under false pretenses, he is truly after her immense wealth and prosperity. Lastly, Ichabod experiences no glory or success, like a hero characteristically does. He instead faces a downfall in which he loses the girl to his rival and basically his life as he knows it because of his over-active imagination, which blinds him from reality. All these qualities make up exactly what a hero is not, and that is why Ichabod Crane is an anti-hero.
According to Umberto Eco, “The real hero is always a hero by mistake….” In other words, one doesn’t act heroic as a lifestyle, but by surprise when the time comes to do so. To be heroic means to put others before you in a desperate time of someone else’s despair. Two works of literature that agree with the critical lens are the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee and the memoir, Night, by Elie Wiesel. Atticus Finch and Elie Wiesel both demonstrate heroic actions unintentionally.
A hero puts other people before themselves and is admired for their qualities, courage, and achievements. A hero obtains knowledge throughout their journey of helping and healing. From Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huckleberry begins his journey with his first dilemma to save a slave, Jim. Huckleberry Finn begins to transform into a courageous hero when he learns the value of a human being.
Humanity has created this “universal story” of what a hero is, or at least the myth of it, time and again. Different tasks and encounters with a variety of villains all lead the hero to the prize, to a new life (Seger). This person deemed the hero is as ordinary as the next but what makes them different is the drastic test that they must face. Individuals admire this character because the hero stands for something, something bigger than themselves. In many works of Literature, a character comes forth as a hero, only to die because of a character trait known as a tragic flaw; Hamlet from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Okonkwo from Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, and Winston Smith from Orwell’s 1984 all exhibit that single trait, which leads, in one way or another, to their deaths. These three tragic heroes are both similar and different in many ways: the way they die, their tragic flaws, and what they learn. All three characters strongly exhibit the traits needed to be classified as a tragic hero.
Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.
Heroes in literature and history, more often than not, meet tragic ends, unless they were created by Walt Disney. These particular people are often seen as someone who is apart from the masses in morals and attempt to accomplish a higher calling for the common good. The problem with this type of hero is that they are destined for suffering.Two such characters exist in classic literature, Winston Smith of George Orwell’s 1984 and Hamlet of William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.” Hamlet is the true classic tragic hero, though, because he is of noble birth, possesses high moral standards, completes the task he is given to better the world, and causes tragedy in both his life and the lives of others.

With fear comes courage, with experience comes bravery, and with pain comes strength. One may assume that these traits are the exact characteristics a hero. However, heroism can come in many different forms. Victor Frankenstein, from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and Beowulf exemplify many different traits of heroism.
Christopher McCandless is the ideal tragic hero because he had everything in the world but he gave it up to go on a two year trip into the wild and through his own actions he paid the ultimate price. McCandless had a goal to achieve in the wilderness but as Aristotle said “The tragic hero's powerful wish to achieve some goal inevitably encounters limits, usually those of human frailty.(Aristotle #2)”Although McCandless met his fate at the end of his journey the fact that he attempted this grand adventure makes him a hero rather than an imbecile.
“I wish I could be a hero!” Many adults in today’s society hear small children wishing they could become heroes. Children wish to be more like heroes for the reason that heroes are the type of people who risk their lives to help others. Throughout history, children have had a positive connotation with the word “hero.” The heroes many small children talk about are the fictional ones who protect cities from villains: Superman, Batman, Spiderman, and others. However, these are not the only types of heroes in today’s world. Firefighters and policemen are also considered heroes because they save the lives of those in danger. Many adults consider their inspirations to be heroes, such as Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and Michelle Obama. Heroes do not always have to be real; for instance, they can also be literary characters such as Atticus Finch, Jonas, and Odysseus. Heroes, fictional or not, only have one purpose, to help people in need. These motivating people are in the rare category of people who willingly spend their whole lives helping people achieve their dreams. Heroes are the people who unselfishly help people live their lives in a peaceful manner. Many children wish they could become heroes, such as Bilbo Baggins. In The Hobbit, J.R.R Tolkien explores how Bilbo Baggins matures and ultimately becomes a hero.
Joseph Campbell defines a hero as “someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Moyers 1). The Hero’s Journey consists of three major parts: the separation, the initiation, and the return. Throughout a character’s journey, they must complete a physical or spiritual deed. A physical deed involves performing a daunting and courageous act that preserves the well-being of another person. A spiritual deed calls for action that improves another individual’s state of mind.
In folklore and legend the hero in a narrative is usually depicted as extremely physically and performs heroic feats like slaying a dragon or rescuing a damsel. In contemporary literature our heros have began to extricate them from the shiny packaging that once contained the idea of what is considered a hero and revealing a new a covering similar to everyday people. These new heros are emotionally strong instead of brawny. They are adaptable and resilent. They a flawed, but they learn from past mistakes and grow. For a time, the main characters in a story, poem, or narrative were easily classified as either being a hero or a villain. A hero would be easy to identify by the traits he'd possess, such as bravery, honesty, selflessness, trustworthiness, courage, leadership, and more. The villain would be easy to identify as well, possessing traits such as maliciousness, deceitfulness, immorality, dark, wishing harm upon others, and more. But what if the character lacked the natural heroic qualities but wasn't a villain either? What if the person displayed personality flaws that would traditionally be associated with a villain, but has heroic intentions? These questions were finally answered with the emergence of the anti-hero in literature.
To answer this question we must address what we are actually being asked. To do this we must evaluate what a hero really is, a true hero is a person, typically a man, who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. The question of nobility in a hero is greatly debated, in order to be a hero is it a crime to know you are and feel a sense of pride and maybe over confidence in your ability? ‘Let no man call me good. I am not blest. My single virtue is the end of crimes’ meaning, heroes are those who recognise they have done something to receive respect and authority but do not brag or call themselves good, furthermore in this essay I will be evaluating on whether both authors portray their characters, mainly Stanhope, as modest and just. I will be evaluating whether they are truly worthy of being named heroes. The question of a ‘flawed hero’ is a very interesting concept, we have to wonder whether the flaws make them a hero because they can be relatable to us, someone for us to look up to, someone to be like, or whether them being flawed takes away some shine from their heroism. Stanhope is looked up to and respected by all his men, whether his drinking problem is a flaw or not, whereas Jack is still on light footing, the respect his men have for him is limited.
