The use of ice baths as a form of recovery post-exercise is a controversial issue, as there is evidence which support both negative and positive effects. Athletes submerge themselves in baths containing ice in order to reduce post-exercise muscle soreness and to allow them to get back to training sooner with no ongoing soreness. However, Ice baths can endanger muscle growth as it causes the body to be unable to adapt to the demands of training and also can reduce performance due to temporary reducing muscle power. Ice baths are widely used in amateur and professional sports, therefore the outcome of this question is significant to sportsman everywhere. It is evident that ice baths are well known for their ability to decrease muscle soreness …show more content…
Athletes are able to “perform repeated bouts of exercise at maximal level with less accumulated fatigue” , when they submerge themselves in an ice bath post-exercise. They are able to “recover quicker and return to training sooner” , as the ice reduces the initial stages of injury. Athletes can continue to work at a higher intensity for multiple days at a time, as they are able to prevent muscle soreness. This is an advantage for elite athletes, as they decrease the number of days off due to injury, which enables them to train more frequently. Elite tennis players thrive on ice baths in order to recover and keep performing at maximal level during Grand Slams. Tennis is a demanding sport and players only get approximately 48h in-between each match during a Slam. Players such as Andy Murray submerge themselves in ice to be able to recover and reduce inflammation, allowing them to continue to perform at their best throughout the tournament . Other physical demanding sports such as AFL, also heavily rely on ice baths to allow players to get back to training sooner. North Melbourne player, Drew Petrie, includes ice baths in his recovery routine, describing them as an “unpleasant experience” , but worthwhile in reducing muscle soreness . Many elite level sports incorporate ice baths into their recovery regime, allowing
It has long been established that both short and long-term exercise increase metabolic rate and heat production. This naturally predisposes participants to dehydration. Typical symptoms of dehydration include elevated temperature, fluid and electrolyte imbalance due to sweating, and loss of critical nutrients, such as glycogen (depleted via metabolic pathways). Many individuals participating in moderate to rigorous training schedules may engage in daily exercise, if not multiple exercise routines in one day (3,4,5,6). It then follows that the goal for these individuals should be avoidance of dehydration and maximization of rehydration through maintenance of electrolyte balance, replenishment of muscle glycogen, and plasma osmolality. Thus, examination of a fluid’s efficacy in these three areas is crucial. Through extensive research, it is evident that Gatorade will rehydrate faster and more effectively than water.
In modern time medical science has gotten the ability to heal all injuries that occur in sports. It has given us variety of medicines and health care practices by which we can prevent the injury that could happen to the player in any sport. Medical science has advanced so much now that it can recover almost anything; therefore hockey injuries are not a big deal. 58% of injuries are from the lower body and upper body, and 42% are head, and also almost 82% of the times it is a minor injury. Study has now advanced and can help a player heal from an injury quickly, easily, and in less time.
Early summer, about forty-eight years ago in 1965, University of Florida assistant football coach, Dwayne Douglas, sat down and wondered why so many of his players were suffering from heat strokes and heat related illnesses during games or practice. So, he went to the university physicians and asked them to determine why this was happening. Not long after it was discovered that two key factors were causing the Florida Gator players to suffer from these conditions: the fluids and electrolytes the players were losing during the events were not being put back into the body, and the massive amounts of carbohydrates the players' bodies used for energy were not being replenished. So, he decided to create Gatorade. There are plenty of Gurus out there who will sit and tell you that water is natural and it’s the best thing you could ever put into your body, but let’s get real I’ll take scientifically proven research over someone’s “word” any day. Arthritis, muscle pain, low back pain, swelling or weakness- if you suffer under one on these conditions, doctors might recommend a treatment that you might not be familiar with- acupuncture. The ancient treatment used in China thousands of years ago involves thin, metal needles being placed in the patient’s skin. The human body is described as a composition of yin and yang, two fluids that balance each other out and are responsible for the body’s mental and physical health. If yin isn’t able to flow anymore, the human body is said to be imbalanced, mental and physical disease occur as a result. The Acupuncture needles are now supposed to help unblock the flow of yin and cure the conditions by connecting with special points selected from lines

Being hypothermic or having frostbite on any part of your body can be very dangerous. This is an interesting topic because it can happen to anyone at anytime and if your are not prepared for it, it can be life threatening. If you are just going out to play in the snow and you are not dressed warm enough or all your skin is not covered frostbite can develop and you are at risk of hypothermia. Even if it is not snowing and there is not a cloud in the sky you can develop hypothermia if it is cold enough. If you are going to go hiking or skiing you will want to be aware of what hypothermia is and what to do if you get frostbite as this can result in the amputation of limbs and fingers. When skiing up in Vermont over Christmas break while going down the mountain my fingers started hurting and they were very cold. My dad and I were going down to the base of mountain, it was our final run of the day. We were skiing in negative 20 degree weather. This sparked my interest in hypothermia and frostbite because if we had not decided to get off the mountain frostbite developed on my hands and fingers and I would have run the risk of maybe getting them amputated. The purpose of writing this paper is to show how dangerous and lethal hypothermia and frostbite are if not taken care of properly.
Aquatic Therapy refers to treatments and exercises performed in water for physical rehabilitation purposes. Aquatic therapy uses water as a therapeutic benefit for individuals. The water acts as a form of resistance and aids in improving ones function, flexibility, range of motion, strength, balance, aerobic capacity and endurance, gait and locomotion, and pain management. Due to the buoyancy of the water and its non-gravitational forces, aquatic therapy offers a form of exercise which does not put stress on an individual’s joints or spine. Rather, it serves as a relaxation technique (Webmd, 2014).
In a case of an acute knee injury the best modality to apply would be an ice or cold whirlpool. Thermotherapy would only further aggravate the injury in the acute phase while cryotherapy would help reduce the symptoms and speed the healing process. The reasoning behind utilizing an ice or cold whirlpool would be partially because the knee can be slightly tricky as the surface is very irregular. Furthermore, a whirlpool can provide the deepest cold penetration out of the other modalities. A small whirlpool can be utilized by filling it with water and ice to obtain a temperature of 50°F-60°F and once the treatment is over, towels should be utilized to dry the injured leg. Furthermore, precautions should be taken by avoiding overcooling,
Gawande talks about how he came up with the idea of hiring a coach to watch him perform surgery after an experience he had playing tennis. Years of playing the game and not improving, Gawande incidentally finds himself play tennis with a young man who is a tennis couch. The young man gives Gawande a tip about keeping his feet under his body when hitting the ball. At first he is uncertain, stating, “My serve had always been the best part of my game…..With a few minutes of tinkering, he’d added at least ten miles an hour to my serve. I was serving harder than I ever had in my life” (Gawande, 2011, p.3). Gawande is so greatly impacted by this experience that he decides to hire a coach to help him with is professional endeavors.

Creative new training methods, developed by coaches, athletes and sport scientists, are aimed to help improve the quality and quantity of athletic training ( Kellmann, 2010, p.1). However, these methods have encountered a consistent set of barriers including overtraining ( Kellmann, 2010, p.1). Due to these barriers, the need for physical and mental recovery in athletics brought an increasing attention in practice and in research ( Kellmann, 2010, p.1).
Recovering from an injury can indeed be a difficult process and athletes must wait for however long in able to play the sport again. During that duration of time, the idea of waiting and not performing can sometimes cause an athlete to feel angry, to be in denial, and
It also leads in reducing the recovery time of any injury to heal. Increase motion and flexibility: It is not new for anyone the professional players and athletes may go through muscle rigidity if over train, so sports massage will help in providing relax to tense muscles along with flexibility. Having sports massage before a game or competition can help you with good performance and
Hearing the loud “thump” as the ball hits the racket is extremely satisfying, especially if your life now revolves around this fast-paced and exhilarating sport. Tennis is an outdoor game played by two individuals or pairs of players on a clay or grass court that’s divided by a low net. Each game is played with tennis rackets and small, yellow elastic balls. Tennis was first introduced in Wales and the United Kingdom in 1873 by “Major Walter Wingfield” (tennistheme.com). While most sports are easy to pick up, tennis takes extreme dedication to learn how to play the game, to perfect the amount of technique it takes, as well as its great impact on one’s personal life.
