Recommended: Explain Iago role in the play of Othello

Iago is well-known as William Shakespeare’s most sacred character in the play Othello. His role He is a prominent soldier who has fought beside Othello for several years, earning him the role as his trusted advisor. He is classified as the antagonist of the play due to his acts of jealousy and sociopathic tendencies. Iago can be classified as the most heinous villain in Shakespeare. Iago’s most terrible characteristic is his utter lack of convincing motivation for his actions. Other traits also include: a lack of compassion for others, cold heartedness, shallow emotions and charm.
In the first scene, he claims to be angry at Othello for having passed him over for the position of lieutenant. None of these claims seem to explain Iago’s deep hatred of Othello and Iago’s inability to express his true motivation. He is willing to take revenge on anyone; Othello, Desdemona, Cassio, Roderigo, even his wife Emilia. His acts are the slightest provocation and he enjoys the pain and damage he causes. This is a sign of impulsivity.

He manipulated all the characters and only harmed them in doing so. He had no intentions of good, but only immoral. Iago used his intelligence, selfishness, and his skilled lying habits which only revealed him as a sociopathic character. Iago used his convincing and lying skills to make Othello believe that Desdemona was wrong and that he should do something about it, and of course Othello believed Iago because he felt as though he can trust him. Iago also used his friendship as an advantage, which is why he went through all the trouble in getting Cassio drunk so he would lose his position and then Iago would gain more trust from Othello. Overall, sociopaths tend to think and be higher than everyone around them.
