Chemical changes are when substances combine to form a new substance which is called synthesis and are usually irreversible. A chemical reaction causes atoms in the substances to rearrange and change their properties or composition therefore resulting in at least one new substance. Chemical reactions can also cause the decomposition of a substance resulting in two or more different substances. There are many manmade and natural chemical changes that happen everyday. Two main natural chemical changes are; combustion e.g; wood burning, and the metabolism in the human body. Two man made chemical changes are; gas bombs which are used in the military, and the rusting or iron (nails).
Combustion is a chemical combination or change resulting in the production of heat and light. Essentially, wood burning is one of the main forms of combustion. When wood is burnt, the carbon in the wood reacts against the oxygen in the air which then creates ash and smoke causing a chemical change. This creates energy in the shape of heat and light. Burning is a non-reversible chemical change, ashes cannot be turned back into wood. Wood is used for a fuel source of heating and in many areas, wood is the most easily available form of fuel.There are many divergent uses of wood burning in everyday life, one of the main is being able to create heat e.g.; in a fireplace for residential heating. Wood is a renewable fuel for both heating and power generation. Burning wood is the largest energy acquired from a solid fuel biomass. In countries like the United States, wood fuel is the second most used form of renewable energy. In other countries, there is an increasing appeal in using wood waste as a fuel for home and industrial heating.

Combustion is an exothermic reaction that reacts when in contact with oxygen producing heat and a new product. These reactions are as exothermic as it gets. The general form of a combustion reaction is the reaction between a hydrocarbon and oxygen to create carbon dioxide and water. Hydrocarbon + O₂→CO₂+H₂O. Occasionally, these reactions can release light and produce a flame. To start a reaction, most require a flame to provide heat and initiate the reaction. Combustion is a very common reaction. It's what makes our cars go, and it's what burning is. It is containing carbon which reacts with oxygen to form CO2 and H2O. A simple example of the combustion of Methane, a natural gas, CH4 + 2O2 →CO2 + 2H2O. Another example includes the burning of naphthalene with the equation C10H8 + 12 O2 → 10 CO2 + 4 H2O. The combustion of ethane is 2C2H6 + 7O2 → 4CO2 + 6H2O which is another example. A real life example is the combustion of gunpowder. Gunpowder is a mix of potassium nitrate, charcoal, and sulfur. The potassium nitrate decomposes at a high temperature to provide the oxygen needed. The charcoal and sulfur are the fuels in this reaction. Combustion is a rapid, continuous reaction that usually takes place in the gas phase. Wood is an organic compound primarily comprised of cellulose. For wood, the phase change from a solid to gas is almost instantaneous as combustion occurs (Coleman, et al. 95). Ignition occurs when an outside source is no longer needed to sustain combustion (Coleman, et al. 87).

A chemical change involves a creation of a new substance, but a physical change doesn’t involve any creation of any substance. For example, if a piece of chalk drops on the floor and separates into a few small pieces, it’s a physical change, because only the shape of the chalk changed, but no new substance is involved, but if a piece of sodium drops into water, gas comes out, and causes a “pop” sound, that is a chemical change because gas has been formed when sodium dropped in the water. Deforestation is a widely used term, but one with different meanings. Disturbance deforestation refers to all man made disturbances that alter a forest, these are the most common. This argumentative essay discusses the positive and negative aspects of deforestation. In the first part of the essay the pro arguments of deforestation will be discussed. For example, the issue of Global population and how forests are being used, land use and the ways forests contribute, wood use, forest growth, destruction and the reasons for cutting down the trees. People have been deforesting the Earth for thousands of years, primarily to clear land for crops or livestock. Although tropical forests are largely confined to developing countries, they aren’t just meeting local or national needs; economic globalization means that the needs and wants of the global population are bearing down on them as well. Direct causes of deforestation are agricultural expansion, wood extraction (e.g., logging or wood harvest for domestic fuel or charcoal), and infrastructure expansion such as road building and urbanization. Rarely is there a single direct cause for deforestation. Most often, multiple processes work simultaneously or sequentially to cause deforestation.
