Perception is reality. As human beings our thoughts and beliefs are often the basis upon which we construct our social environment. Perception is a powerful phenomenon, and in a single moment one’s perception of a set of circumstances can shift, altering an individual’s reality as they know it. Given that one of the key factors in defining a crisis can be found in an individual’s perception of the precipitating event, perception becomes a vital component of maintaining balance in life.
This shift in perception was solely responsible for the complete alteration of my world as I understood it to be. My perception of the past three years, the future of my marriage, and my own future was threatened in one day, in a way that spun my world into a personal crisis. My husband and I had been married for a difficult two years. The first of those two years he was deployed to Iraq, while the latter of the two was spent attempting to recover from that deployment. My marriage was difficult, but until that day in April I was committed to making it work, it was for better or worse; this was the worse but in my perception the better was yet to come. My husband had cheated; I had forgiven, my husband had lied; I had trusted, my husband drank; I offered support, my husband was deployed; I offered my loyalty, but when I discovered my husband had created a false reality for me to live in; I walked away.
Coming home from school that day I noticed I had a new message on my Facebook. It was an email from my husband’s sister, and for a moment I was curious as to what she had to say. As I began to read I felt my world begin to spin, my heart rate increased, my thoughts began to race, and I felt a wave of panic consume me. In this email she informed m...

...m as an opportunity to grow as an individual and a professional. Finally, I was able to objectively view my husband’s behavior in the context of human behavior, and in doing so I took ownership of my social work education on a deep personal level. This objectivity will be useful in assisting future clients throughout crisis situations.
By not only experiencing this crisis, but also by processing my actions and environment on a spiritual level, I realized that in a single moment in time your perception, and thereby your reality, can be shattered. A storm can overcome your world, and in its wake that storm can leave destruction and chaos. But it is after the storm, after all we have known has crumbled, that we are given the profound opportunity to rebuild our lives from the inside out, with a stronger foundation, capable of weathering future storms life may bring.
While it may seem like human survival after a traumatic event may be anarchy, yet after chaos there can be order, humans come together in light of horrible events and even in the worst disaster culture will survive. Therefore, humanity is not in as much trouble as it can be assumed in case of disaster.
Drea Knufken’s thesis statement is that “As a society, we’ve acquired an immunity to crisis” (510-512). This means that humans in general, or citizens of the world, have become completely desensitized to disasters, we think of them as just another headline, without any understanding of their impact upon fellow
Entering the field of social work you must be prepared to encounter many personalities. Knowing this, you have to become aware of people with different backgrounds and morals. By doing this you will be able to help your clients to the best of your ability, without forcing your personal beliefs or values on to them. A value is a set of rules or or beliefs that affect your every day decisions (Sheafor & Horejsi, 2011). Applying your personal values to every situation is very important, however, you must learn to separate what you know and what is in actuality the best outcome for your client. I will be discussing the ways I feel about the “Vignette’s”, while also incorporating different things I have learned from the readings and class discussions.
“When I saw my house three weeks after the storm, I was glad it stood but I knew it was time for change. Now five years later, I have learned that for me to enjoy the beauty of this place, there is a cost to bear. I love this place and am here to stay, but I have to invest more than I had imagined. The hurricane has greatly affected our lives but not only in a bad way.”
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would like to study social work because I feel it will lead me directly to one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, as well as giving me the chance to combine helping people 's mental well being with their physical
In closing, I would like to say that the Film was very informative. In fact, I have gained a good insight into my own development as a social work therapist. I am now able to conduct interviews with clients and engage in reflective listening, an area that I once struggled with. Furthermore, I am now confident in working with clients to develop a clear treatment plan, another area that I once struggled with. Overall, the film allowed me to track my progress, and see the areas that I could use work. I looked forward to engaging in a motivational interviewing
The “crisis of perception” is in my life, and everyone's. For instance success for most comes from an education. However that success isn’t associated with the knowledge, but with the money you make as a result. The physicist used the “crisis of perception” example as an explanation of how to fix everything wrong with the world. Explaining that focusing on one piece can’t work, and that everything is “interconnected“. She uses the example of a person with gallstones. A western medicine physician would take the gall bladder out.
...l in an urban area. When working closely with students in the past, it was difficult knowing that I could provide extensive support but didn’t have the expertise. I 've explored different careers involving help children and their families but it always led back to social work. As a graduate student, I expect to be challenged as a student and a professional. I expect to learn all the different theories, practices and policies in place to properly help students. I look forward to the combination of coursework and practicums to enhance my skills. In retrospect, practicums can be the most challenging areas. To overcome this challenge, I’ve observed the school social worker at my current position and have developed a better understanding of the daily responsibilities. I am confident that I will succeed and to be able to help and advocate for students through social work.
Before, I could even take note, it was already October. It was time for me to pack everything in my room, and say my final goodbyes to my family members. I was going to leave everything that meant a lot to me behind. Previously, before October, we picked up my dad from the airport so that he could help us load all of our belongings to the U-Haul truck. Lily, ‘my cousin’, (we aren’t related, she is just a very close friend who I consider family) was staying with use because she want to see her father, who was also living in Denver. My mom and dad, sister, uncle, cousin, and I all stayed at the house one last night. I remember that my sister said that all her friends gathered around my mom’s car to wave goodbye to her. Her closest friends got very emotional and they started to cry. Not only did the move affect me, it also affected my sister greatly. It was like someone had given her a punch in the stomach. By the next day, we had everything in the U-Haul truck, and it was time for me to leave my precious Vegas behind. We had now started the drive to
We are all individuals that are caught up in an unwanted storm. Not knowing when it will end, we have to decided to journey through it or hide from it. There will be endless days of struggle in our lifetime, where rain will hit like bullets onto our skin. However, our mentality and approach to situations have a lot of influence on whether you will move on or stay the same during an obstacle. The power to face the storm or hide from it starts, continues, and ends within ourselves. The storm will not last forever. No matter what the sun will always shine, just look for a brighter tomorrow.
It was a Monday night; I remember it like it was yesterday. I had just completed my review of Office Administration in preparation for my final exams. As part of my leisure time, I decided to watch my favorite reality television show, “I love New York,” when the telephone rang. I immediately felt my stomach dropped. The feeling was similar to watching a horror movie reaching its climax. The intensity was swirling in my stomach as if it were the home for the butterflies. My hands began to sweat and I got very nervous. I could not figure out for the life of me why these feelings came around. I lay there on the couch, confused and still, while the rings continued. My dearest mother decided to answer this eerie phone call. As she picked up, I sat straight up. I muted the television in hopes of hearing what the conversation. At approximately three minutes later, the telephone fell from my mother’s hands with her faced drowned in the waves of water coming from her eyes. She cried “Why?” My Grandmother had just died.
The way that each individual interprets, retrieves, and responds to the information in the world that surrounds you is known as perception. It is a personal way of creating opinions about others and ourselves in everyday life and being able to recognize it under various conditions. Each person’s perceptions are used as a kind of filter that every piece of information has to pass through before it determines the effect that it has or will have on the person from the stimulus. It is convincing to believe that we create multiple perceptions about different situations and objects each day. Perceptions reflect our opinions in many ways. The quality of a person’s perceptions is very important and can affect the response that is given through different situations. Perception is often deceived as reality. “Through perception, people process information inputs into responses involving feelings and action.” (Schermerhorn, et al.; p. 3). Perception can be influenced by a person’s personality, values, or experiences which, in turn, can play little role in reality. People make sense of the world that they perceive because the visual system makes practical explanations of the information that the eyes pick up.
Perception is defined as the awareness of the world through the use of the five senses, but the concept of perception is often used to isolate one person’s point of view, so how reliable can perception be if no one person’s is exactly the same? The word perception itself is riddled with different, well, perceptions of its meaning. When some hear the word they might automatically think of it as something innately flawed, that can easily be fooled by illusions, while others may think of its usefulness when avoiding scalding a hand on a hot stove. I am here to agree with both and to argue that perception is something necessary and helpful, and something that should be scrutinized for its flaws. By looking at perception as a way of knowing in the
As a student, I will study and practice techniques, beyond a generalist perspective, that will allow me to give clients hope and the ability to see something greater than what they are facing. Upon completion of a Master of Social Work direct practice degree and certificate in gerontology and mental health programs, I intend to become a licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I will competently incorporate specialized skills in different professional settings while developing my knowledge of a wide range of social issues and professional standards. With commitment, I wish to develop skills that will enable me to create or find hidden resources and services for my future clients, create platforms through consoling for victims of
The social worker sets to the side the form of oppression, so it focuses on the need of social advocacy and social action. Also, coming from a low-income family I had suffer first hand hunger. My parent were poor that there were times we would eat a piece of bread and water. This event motivate me to help other people in need to provide resources that they need to better their well-being.
