One of the important aspects of sustainability revolves around service to the community. I want to participate in the EcoAmbassador program because it will give me to give back to the community as well as provide me with experience in the field. With my intended double major in environmental science (B.S.) and business, this internship will provide me the opportunity to further expand my knowledge in the field. Also, I want the opportunity to apply all the knowledge I’ve learned so far. In Virginia Beach, I was part of Project Green Teens, a student-led organization dedicated to improving the environment, where we worked with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to construct oyster reef castles along the Lynnhaven River. The castles would increase …show more content…
I’ve learned that there are some barriers preventing William and Mary from being completely net-zero, but nevertheless, it is important to keep pushing until those barriers fall. In the meanwhile, I worked with the Carbon Offset program to try and get people to offset their carbon through donations that fund project. Reducing the college’s carbon footprint is one step closer to a sustainable college. Next, I work with the Green House Gas Audit to determine where most of the colleges CO2 emissions are coming from. With the audit, I can analyze the data and determine which areas need to focus on for projects in reducing CO2 emissions. While all this data analysis and requesting for donations is great my main goal is to have a significant amount of photovoltaic panels on campus in the next years. After learning about the problems with Dominion and the government sector that revolved around solar energy I decided to take another route. I started the engineering club here to serve as a medium to bring solar. I plan to fundraise and plan out projects to skip through most of the college’s bureaucratic processes. It will take time and effort, it may not even be successful, but in the end, all I can do is hope that my service will lead to a more sustainable
One starting point to reducing the amount of greenhouse gases that you release is to find your carbon footprint. The carbon
...g, however, costs only $35 per ton. The school also makes $10 for every ton of paper it recycles” (Figueroa, 2009). This means that apart from saving the environment, the university also earns and is able to cut down on expenses for certain things because of the use of recycled materials.
This rhetorical analysis essay describes how reducing carbon emissions that cause pollution and other harmful effects on the environment and the lives of the people can attain a clean environment. It is based on Andrew C. Revkin’s article Carbon-Neutral is Hip, but is it Green? This article explains how carbon-neutral companies reduce carbon emissions. The companies’ work is to estimate the amount of greenhouse gases that are produced by different bodies like big businesses, international banks and transportation sectors. The effects are then sold to these emitting parties who pay for projects such as algae fertilization and tree plantation that could absorb the emitted gases. The argument of the author of this article is in agreement with what most environmentalists claim.
Thesis: As the environment encounters damage from increasing levels of carbon dioxide, actions on both governmental and individual levels need to be implemented in order to protect the welfare of future life.
r. “Environmental Studies” were the most interesting and abstract words I had ever seen preceding “High School”. For this reason and the fact that it was near Central Park, I decided to apply and then attend. Because of the central theme of my classes I have been exposed in the shape of special speakers and class discussions to others who share my fear but not my growing sense of hopelessness. Quite recently, it has become more and more important to me that I am a part of the solution for the problems facing the environment.

Specific Purpose Statement: To persuade my audience that that solar power should become the main form of alternative energy in the Unites States.
Climate Change is something that no one person can take responsibility for. Rather, it is to the fault of many that our planet is now jeopardized. When looking at Oberlin College’s mission, I see them working hard to mitigate their impact and it is inspiring. They have decided to work toward a common end goal and participation is not just a handful, but an entire campus coming together for the common good. When I step back and look at our tri-campus community, it is easy to see that we are making progress, but we still have much to do in order to catch-up to this “role-model” campus.
United States policy and legislature developments regarding solar energy include the SunShot Initiative, the American Recovery and Rehabilitation Act (ARRA) of 2009, and the Energy Improvement and Extension Act (EIA) of 2008. The SunShot Initiative was enacted in February 2011 and aims to “make the total cost of solar energy fully economically-viable for everyday use, so that all Americans can benefit from this clean renewable energy source.”1 The ARRA invested $114 million into the solar energy industry for the research and development of photovoltaic systems, solar power concentration and high penetration solar deployment.2 The ARRA and EIA created tax credits for homeowners and businesses for their investment in solar power.3 The implementation of these policy and legislature initiatives promote the growth and development of the solar energy industry and therefore positively impact Sun Edison.
One of my personal goals for the project was to learn as much as I could about the sustainability issue facing us. I did this by participating in all of the projects that were done throughout the semester. The main project that occurred during the semester was the personal sustainability goals that we each set for ourselves. While doing the actions that we pledged to do, we learned different things about sustainability that we never knew before. One of the things that I learned was that, at Clemson, it is hard for students who want to recycle to be able to recycle. There are not the necessary facilities nearby our student housing to place our recyclables. I also learned that some actions that should be done to be sustainable are hard to do in the society that we live in. One of these activities that we do is the needless driving that Americans do in general. Since we live in a moving society, it is sometimes hard to do. An easy thing that everyone can do is to recycle some of his or her wastes. This can be done for most people at little or no extra effort than just throwing your trash away.
There are so many different ways to analyze and model climate change. It truly is a multidimensional problem. I think that this program is important because it’s giving those from my generation that are already interested in global climate change an opportunity to study it. As a third-year civil engineer we not only look at our projects from an engineering perspective but we also look at them from an environmental and economic perspective. For instance, cement production is responsible for 8 to 10 percent of global CO2 production.
In the face of this impending crisis, I feel that my generation must make a large-scale investment in the utilization of renewable energy and work for the preservation of our planet’s resources. In the interest of my future family, my country, and for every rising leader of our world, I am strongly moved by the importance of this issue. The most important part of my senior year has been the opportunity to make a real contribution to the search for an energy solution. I am currently interning in the Aerospace Transportation and Advanced Systems department at Georgia Tech Research Institute.
When picking an energy resource for the topic of this paper, I bounced around a lot of ideas. Then it occurred to me that I should write about what I will be living with in about a month. My mom just finished designing and building our earthbag, solar, off-grid house, a four-year endeavor. I will soon live in a place powered by one of the most common alternative energy resources, solar energy, so I should learn more about it. At our new house, we have two stand alone pedestals with six 170W panels on each pedestal, making for a 2040W or 2kW solar system.
57). During recruitment, younger candidates are likely to show higher interest in a company with a successful sustainability program (SHRM, 2011, p. 33). Employers should seek those who seek to include environmental stewardship and social responsibility in their core values (Liebowitz, 2010, p. 52). Employers should also identify those individuals who are willing to work as team, adapt quickly to change, and inclined to take risk while finding creative solutions to problems. Success with new employees depends on early introduction of company sustainability goals; by including sustainability in the onboarding process, employees can relate the sustainability efforts to their job
