I’m Asian. Specifically, I am a Vietnamese female who is striving to work in the medical field. Although, I discovered my passion for science and math by being in the Biotechnology Academy, me being in the medical field is expected due to my race. With that being said, it shows a flaw with the Biotechnology Academy and having a profession such as being a doctor, pharmacist, and so forth. In addition, the diversity in the academy and the job field is limited. This lead to me having the idea that if one is not Asian, it is difficult to be associated with the scientific world and it also gives others the idea that if one is Asian, that person is automatically a doctor. It makes me indignant to live in a world in which a profession is dominated by a race or gender. Therefore, my goal in life is not just to have a successful job in the medical field but to also change the way jobs are seen in the world. I have experienced many events that shaped who I am today. Their assumption for me may be correct, but that does not mean the same assumption is correct for others. The lack of diversity for the major limits the chance for others to join. The fact that an Asian female is expected to be a pharmacist, that women aren’t seen as an engineer, and that it is not common for a male to be a nurse is heart-rending. The world is filled with professions that are open to anyone. Because it is opened to anyone, it should be seen that way. Despite the majority of Asians going to Medical School and males being Presidents, a job shouldn’t be judged based on what is seen outside, it should be judged based on the requirements needed to have that job and what qualities the interview displays.
