The smell of fresh mowed grass and fervent talking woke me up from a daze, I lifted my head from the text book which rested in my lap. I glanced around at the 28 or so boys that surrounded me and noticed that I was the only girl. Most other girls I knew my age where perfecting their wing eyeliner and holding a steady B average, unlike them I was playing soccer. This tryout was supposed to be like any other I would get up walk down to the field and do some drills with the other kids and go home. I wasn’t unused to being the only girl on a sports team but in never fazed me or my teammates much. The coach threw down the large net bag he had slung over one shoulder. The thin black net stretched to reveal the bright white soccer balls underneath. The coach looked around at the kids before saying anything, finally he rested his eyes on me his face of stolid expression broke by a scowl for just an instant. He spoke up and said, "All right kids today we are going to see if you have what it takes to make the U14 team, first everybody picks a ball up and dribble it down to the goal!". The kids all rushed forward and grabbed a ball I grabbed one with vertical black and white stripes. We all stared dribbling down the field kicking the ball between our legs as we ran. I started to pull ahead I had had more experience in playing soccer. The coach's scowl returned he mumbled something under his breath. Once we all got to the goal post the coach said that that was all he needed to see and that we could all go home. As our bright chrome Honda Civic pulled up into the driveway of our small one-story house I asked my mom "Hey do you think that coach likes me?".
