People tell me that they can see it all the time in every performance. They explain to me how clear it is for them to see how much I love dance. Each number is around two minutes, nevertheless so much love and effort can shine through in that short amount of time. I began dancing at the age of six when my mother enrolled me in a ballet and gymnastics class in Louisville. Most kids are outgoing and sociable, although I have never been that kid until I joined a dance team. Having the courage to be confident and to communicate with others is vital. This small “slice of life” benefited me in staying active, making new friends, and bettering my personality. Most teenagers in this high school are dedicated members in multiple sports. Years ago, I used to be involved in volleyball and basketball. I even had a dream of being a cheerleader and cheering with my friends. I soon learned that no matter what type of sport or physical activity you are a part of, it can benefit your body. Staying healthy and active while you’re young can result in a happier you years later. Dance is a demanding yet blissful activity that not everyone can do. I was always a better listener hearing other people’s conversations instead of joining them. When I joined a different dance studio a few years back, I was new to Scottsburg and terrified to make new friends. Something you find out very quickly is that dance kids are incredibly accepting. It didn’t take long for me to become close with many of them, even if they were younger than me. I even became best friends with my dance instructor, Oletha Reel. By universal definition, "sport" is listed as "an activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively." Football, basketball, baseball, soccer and other primary activities have always been concretely defined as sports in society. However, one of the most physically demanding activities is constantly forgotten when it comes to the realm of sports- dance. Dance requires a tremendous amount of training and creates an aura of competition in which people compete to be the best, win, and take home the trophy- just like in traditionally accepted sports. These sports, however, do not possess an element of psychological health threats that some competitive dancers unfortunately must account for due to the emphasis placed on physical appearance.
It was fair to me that my brother was participating on a baseball team while I've been wanting to dance for years. In order to perform, I of course needed to go to the practice. Practicing three times a week for three hours was rough for the first few weeks considering I was a beginner, but I didn't let that intimidate me and so I continued. Making new friends, learning more about Mexican culture, and boosting my confidence, all of these in my eyes were areas that I had some sort of struggled with but dance little by little, helped me accomplish such positive effects in the three.

I have been a dancer since the age of 3. My earliest memory of dance was when I was too terrified to go on stage during a recital and I refused to go on no matter how much they tried to push me. Up until the age of about 12, dance had been just a hobby or an extracurricular activity. In fact, I didn’t even enjoy going to dance. I didn’t have friends there and I wasn’t that good of a dancer. It wasn’t until I participated in Dance Bermuda’s summer dance intensive in collaboration with the American Ballet Theatre in 2012, that I realized that I had a passion for dance. At the program, I was exposed to other dancers that were my age and older and most of them were much more advanced than I. So to avoid being the worst dancer in the program, I took to YouTube and watched hours and hours of dance videos. I researched all the ways to improve my ballet technique. I can remember trying to practice my pirouettes in the kitchen and falling onto the table and knocking a whole bunch of things over. I was determined to be as good as the other girls in the program. By the end of the two weeks I was fired up, motivated, and ready to get back to class after the summer.
I carried my passion for dance along with me when I transitioned into high school, and into college as well. My role as a cheerleader in high school aided in the maintenance of my physical and mental well-being. I felt most empowered when I was performing on stage, and when I was able to enthuse the crowd with my lively facial expressions and body movements. Each girl on my team has her own unique personality, but somehow, we all get along well. We are all such good friends and have had to make it through many difficult situations already, but all it has done was bring us closer together. The girls on my team are all caring, talented, and funny.

I can say that I’m quite open-minded person and I’m not afraid to try new things, but going to a dancing class that only girls do was something that I never thought that I’d do. I don’t consider myself a good dancer but neither a bad one. As a matter of fact, I really like dancing, especially when I’ve had a few drinks. Growing up with the talent I had wasn't easy because I was so shy and never told anyone. I always kept it to myself because I was scared of what someone might say and afraid of them not taking me serious. I started to get interested in dance when I started watching So You Think You Can Dance with my grandma.
