Ed, one of the main characters of Marcus Zusak’s work of fiction, I am the Messenger, changed an immense amount from the exposition to the conclusion of the novel. Ed, though, did not transform as much physically as he did mentally. In the opening of the story, Ed is a simple, uninteresting man who becomes a hero. He prevents a bank robber from escaping the scene of the crime that was just committed. Yet, after stopping this man in his tracks and saving everyone in the bank, Ed believes that he is not different at all, despite how the people around him see him.
Further, along in the story, Ed receives a playing card, the ace of diamonds to be exact. Written on the card were three anonymous addresses and times that Ed did not recognize or ever
