Diagnosis and Measurement When it comes to history of hyperhidrosis, it is very important to emphasize on the pattern of sweating (location, duration, frequency, volume, symmetry, specific triggers, and nocturnal sweating). These factors are all important. Besides, age of onset, impact on quality of life, family history and secondary etiology are also necessary. The proper diagnostic and treatment procedures of primary focal hyperhidrosis requires that the disorder should be diagnosed when ○ visible, focal, excessive sweating of at least six months duration ○ No apparent secondary cause ○ Have at least two of the six criteria as below. • Bilateral and relatively symmetric distribution of sweating • Impairs daily activities • Age of onset …show more content…
<25 years • Cessation of focal sweating during sleep • Positive family history • Frequency of at least once per week In terms of measurement, hyperhidrosis can be measured using three different methods. Firstly, one of the most commonly used and simple way of detecting the presence of sweat is a Minor’s iodine-starch test. Although, it does not provide an accurate result of how much it sweats in those areas, however it, at least, can be used to map the area of excessive sweating before implementing the botulinum toxin injection or other surgery. Gravimetric measures at room temperature, Normal sweating can be defined in quantitative term as less than 1 ml/m2/min of eccrine sweat production.
When comparing quantitative measures such as gravimeter with visual analog scales, the quantitative measures, subjective ratings have a relatively high level of diagnosis sensitivity and specificity (48,49B). This method, however, is preferably used in research field, and is rarely used in clinical practice. Since primary focal hyperhidrosis could cause an impact on quality of life of affected patients, it is also essential for clinicians to assess the quality of life in generals. The third method to be mentioned here is Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale (HDSS). In clinical practice, clinicians may need to use this Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale (HDSS) (5,6,32,50,51 B) as a guideline in determining how focal hyperhidrosis affect and interfere daily activities. HDSS is based on one question. This is also a very useful tool in selecting a proper treatment and assessing how effective it is. Table II. The composite score is objective and calculated through a weighted formula designed to provide an equal contribution from each item while the severity rating is subjective and indicates the need for additional treatment in specific areas (Haraguchi et al., 2009). The SR ranges from 0 to 9 points and the CS ranges from 0 to 1 with anything higher than the normal 9 SR or 1 CS indicating greater problem severities (Haraguchi et al., 2009). Although some problems still exist, the ASI has been reported to have nearly achieved both reliability and validity (Haraguchi et al.,
The first known use of dermatology was established in 1819 and only in the 1930’s did its practice become more widely accomplished, known and sought after. (“Dermatology” 2014) Since then it has extensively evolved and changed and been able to provide services for women and men around the world. Originally being a part of the medicine field can now be considered a division of the beauty industry due to availability of services and treatments for aesthetic, pampering purposes, rather than just originally founded for medical issues of resolving skin disorders and diseases. Dermatology being defined as ‘a branch of medicine dealing with the skin, its structure, functions and diseases’ (“Dermatology” 2014) now offers many professions one being a dermatologist, whic...

In the absence of a consistent classification, assortment and assessment of subjects will become nearly unmanageable. Researchers use diagnostic sets that empower them to draw deductions and comparison among different research groups.
The day I’d been diagnosed with hyperhidrosis was the day I came face to face with my demons though it was also a relief of sorts as there was finally an explanation for these experiences. But boy, how my demons haunted me. They chased me everywhere I went and no matter how hard I avoided them, from time to time they’d catch me. Laugh with glee as I started to shake . Huge waves of anxiety grasping at my heart as sweat, abnormal amounts of them seep their way out of my skin coating at me like a blanket as I writhed in their hold.Sometimes I manage to tear free and continue the endless process of running away but sometimes I can’t , when I’m so exhausted from all the running, so tired from all their stares, so wearied at being the different one. I
Today, I want to share my knowledge on migraines with the help of three descriptions.
Ashkenazi A, Silberstein S. Menstrual migraine: a review of hormonal causes, prophylaxis and treatment. Expert Opin Pharmacother. 2007 Aug;8(11):1605-13.
My mom became a victim to this illness after she had my youngest sibling. She has now lived with primary migraines for about seven years and the cause of her condition is unknown. The possible factors that can lead to migraines include, hormones, caffeine, stress, anxiety, and many others. Similarly, the journal “Providing Care for Patients with Chronic Migraine: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Management”, by Stephen D. Silberstein states, “Other comorbid factors should be addressed, including sleep disorders, neck pain, fibromyalgia, and obesity” (Silberstein). My mother has gone through many things in her life which relate to many of these factors. Therefore, doctors have not been able to determine the cause of her
To begin we will look at the integumentary system and its entire multitude of functions. The main components of the integumentary system are the skin, hair, nails, glands and nerves. For the purpose of this paper we will focus mainly on the levels of the skin and their functions. While the integumentary

At the hypothalamus’s signal, one of two types of sweat glands, the eccrine glands, get to work. These sweat glands produce odorless perspiration, a mixture of water, salt and small amounts of other electrolytes, directly onto the skin’s surface. This second type of sweat gland is found predominantly in hair-covered areas, like the scalp, armpits and groin. These
