WHO:
Hydrologists, also known as “water chemists” are essentially scientists who specialize in soil culture, geology, aquatic biology, statistics, forestry, hydrogeology, chemistry, mathematical modeling, and database management. Fundamentally, they are the scientists who monitor water use and resources by analyzing the water cycle. Hydrologists examine the different physical properties and characteristics, distribution patterns, and circulation pathways of water above and below the earth’s surface. They also study rainfall and precipitation patterns to determine the water content underground and on the surface. Our bodies are composed of 70% water. In a world where water is so important, a hydrologist is someone who ensures we get provided with this necessity.

WHAT:
Hydrologists work to monitor, manage, and protect water and water resources in terms of a commercial, environmental, and academic setting. They ensure that the water is flowing effectively through multiple pipelines and channels for the engineering and control of water provisions. Water Chemists work in teams to study ecosystems and industrial processes in order to ensure a safe and sustainable environment. They make sure that water supply is at its most efficient and cost-effective point. A hydrologist also tests the quality of water that is being supplied in order to maintain the safety of its consumers.

Some common tasks of a hydrologist are:
• Gather meteorological data and analyze it to predict droughts and flooding. o Plan responses to deal with conditions like drought and flooding.
• Create regulations in order ensure the safe and efficient usage of water.
• Collect and analyze water data to determine the level of pollutant in the water system.

Computer Skills are also an essential skill for prospective hydrologists. Students who have experience and background knowledge with computer modeling, data analysis, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), etc. will be better prepared to enter the job market.

Hydrologists often work in teams or with other scientists, engineers, and technicians. They are required to have strong interpersonal skills along with written communication skills. For hydrologists who work in labs, it is essential that they can effectively create technical reports and research proposals, whereas, hydrologists who operate on the field, must have physical stamina.
