According to the World Health Organization, Diseases associated with poverty account for 45 percent of the disease burden in the poorest countries. Because poor third world countries do not have access to many resources, it is hard to prevent death due to disease in these countries. First world countries such as the United States should get more involved in other third world countries that aren’t as fortunate. By doing this, the effects will not only improve the lives of many innocent people who need our help, but it will also improve the lives of many living in the United States. In 1998, Hurricane Mitch hit Central America leaving more than 11,000 people dead and destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes. It was considered the deadliest hurricane to hit the Western Hemisphere in more than 200 years. Hurricane Mitch especially damaged the countries of Nicaragua and Honduras. According to history.com, several million people were made homeless or severely impacted by Hurricane Mitch, which is estimated to have caused more than $5 billion in damages. S. involvement will drastically change the amount of deaths in poverty struck countries by providing basic care such as administering supplies. According to who.int, nearly all of these deaths are either treatable with existing medicines or preventable in the first place. Diseases such as Malaria and the Zeeka virus are easily treatable by bug spray, medicines, or mosquito nets. They can be so easily prevented with cheap resources, and keeping the citizens safe could be easy for Americans if they would be willing to take that step. According to globalissues.org, many people, most of them in tropical countries of the Third World, die of preventable and curable diseases. Simple supplies and vaccinations keep many people alive and healthy in the United States. But in third world countries, the amount of poverty causes millions to die each year of preventable
“The only real nation is humanity” (Farmer 123). This quote represents a huge message that is received in, Tracy Kidder’s, Mountains Beyond Mountains. This book argues that universal healthcare is a right and not a privilege. Kidder’s book also shows the audience that every individual, no matter what the circumstances, is entitled to receive quality health care. In the book Kidder represents, Paul Farmer, a man who spends his entire life determined to improve the health care of impoverished areas around the world, namely Haiti, one of the poorest nations in the world. By doing this the audience learns of the horrible circumstances, and the lack of quality health care that nations like Haiti live with everyday, why every person has the right to healthcare no matter what, and how cost effectiveness should not determine whether or not these people get to live or die. Two texts that also argue this idea are Monte Leach’s “Ensuring Health Care as a Global Human Right,” and Darshak Sanghavi’s “Is it Cost Effective to Treat the World’s Poor.” Leach’s article is an interview with Benjamin Crème that illustrates why food, shelter, education, and healthcare are human rights that have to be available to everyone. He shares many of the same views on health care as Farmer, and the two also share similar solutions to this ongoing problem. Leach also talks about the rapidly growing aids epidemic, and how it must be stopped. Like farmer, he also argues that it is easier to prevent these diseases then to cure them. Furthermore, Sanghavi’s article represents many of the questions that people would ask about cost effectiveness. Yet similar to Farmer’s views, Sanghavi argues that letting the poor d...
Hurricane Mitch was a Category 5 Hurricane which means it had the strongest wind speed on October 29,1998,.Hurricane Mitch caused a lot of destruction,Mudslides and Flooding.
Hurricane Harvey was one of the most devastating hurricanes to strike the United States in several years. Harvey resulted in over eighty fatalities and over 150 billion dollars in damages. This proves to be one of the most destructive hurricanes to be recorded. The overwhelming damage was caused by many different aspects; however, three of the greatest aspects are: varying weather patterns throughout the storm, the city structure of Houston, Texas, and the lack of evacuation. Each of these factors affected the city in a different way, but all resulted in a common outcome, devastation.
Imagine that a family is sitting at home watching a calm game of baseball, when suddenly they realize that a massive wall of water is approaching the neighborhood. Where did this flash flood come from, a reader might ask? The wall of water was made by the raging winds and immense power of Hurricane Andrew. Hurricane Andrew was the second most expensive storm in history that destroyed over 250,000 homes in the states of Florida and Louisiana alone. Hurricane Andrew was not predicted to make landfall, so when it did many civilians did not have any ideas that the Hurricane was coming until it was almost too late. Hurricane Andrew also caused many short and long term effects in the ecosystem and local economies.
In the article Hurricane Mathew Leaves A Trail Of Destruction All The Way From Haiti To North Carolina by Meera Dolasia it talks about Hurricane Matthew and how it affected everything it hit. The hurricane occurred in late September to early October, 2016. The event took place in Haiti all the way to North Carolina. The people that lived in the places the hurricane hit were affected by this awful storm. This article was mostly about Hurricane Matthew and the destruction it left. The hurricane occurred when warm ocean water rose (like every other hurricane) and low pressure. Based on this article, Hurricane Matthew affected a ton of people, places, and our world in general.
Studies had shown that, racial disparities, political and socioeconomic status are one of the most determinants of the use of preventive services. Whereas, public programs of international development agencies during this period were also targeting means of eradicating specific diseases such as malaria, cholera, yaws, smallpox, influenza, cancer and the like. After several years of investment in the vertical interventions, preventable diseases remained a major challenge. Therefore, the international health agencies including experts around the globe began examining other alternative approaches to health improvement which brought ‘’health for all’’ through World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to practioners and the global health planners at the International conference on primary health care in Alma Ata in Kazakhstan. Relative to this, the conference also intended to revolutionize and reform previous health
Mitch is an Atlantic hurricane that occurred in the Caribbean Sea on October 1998 causing a massive amount of destructions. It was the strongest and most powerful hurricane to ever take place that season in the western hemisphere
Nearly 50,000 people, including 30,000 children, die each day due to poverty-related problems and preventable disease in underdeveloped Countries. That doesn’t include the other millions of people who are infected with AIDS and other incurable diseases. Especially those living in Sub-Saharan Africa (70%), or “the Third-World,” and while we fight to finish our homework, children in Africa fight to survive without food, or clean water. During the next few paragraphs I will give proof that poverty and disease are the two greatest challenges facing under developed countries.
Hurricane mitch was caused due to the ocean being extremely warm, the sun heated the Caribbean Sea to almost eighty-seven degrees. The evaporated water created water vapor causing a high octane which is the fuel for a hurricane to be created (Bentley and Horstmeyer 7). Many things factored in to help create hurricane mitch and turn it into a monster storm. The winds helped to lift the disturbance created on the surface of central America. Mitch became a category 5 tropical storm at seven o’clock in the morning on October 26, 1998 and maintained strength for 33 hours and had a low pressure of 26.73 (
This Just End! Hurricanes have been experienced for years. A hurricane is just one of the many natural disasters. A natural disaster is a natural event that causes great damage or loss of life. There is a lot of information on hurricanes, the nation should better prepare for hurricanes, and there are ways to get ready for hurricanes.
Beginning as nothing more than a tropical wave off the western coast of Africa, no one ever expected a monster like Hurricane Andrew to plow through the southern half of the united States, leaving everything in it’s trail destroyed and the people devastated. Andrew was officially recognized as a tropical storm on August 17, 1992 and continued to whirl through the Atlantic, gaining speed and a great deal of power. On August 22, 1992 Andrew finally mustered enough strength to evolve into a terrifying category four hurricane. On August 23, 1992 Andrew began claimed three lives of innocent Bahamian citizens, rushing through the island at one-hundred and fifty. The next morning Andrew finally touch-downed near Homestead causing a wave of panic to ripple throughout Florida, Texas, and Louisiana and the citizens to evacuate by the thousands and take cover.
Poverty is a major issue in our world today where people cannot afford the basic necessities required to survive. Approximately 1.02 billion people go to bed hungry each night. 1 With the world’s population being approximately 6.8 billion this is approximately 17.64% of the world's population. 2 While trying to earn money to survive, people in poverty are exposed to crowded living conditions which result in an increased exposure to contagious and infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria. 2 The other killer disease associated with poverty is AIDS. 3 The need to earn more money often results in having more kids but with a lack of education about safe sex practices, sexually transmitted diseases run rampant in poverty stricken areas. When the parents contract HIV, HIV is passed to their newborns and the cycle continues resulting in a recursive cycle of death by AIDS. The reality is poverty is a silent killer that is ignored by most but by opening our eyes and taking a stand against poverty we can live in a poverty free world.
One of the interesting parts of the PowerPoint was how poverty and social inequalities effect the health of lower income populations. Whether it be due to their knowledge of how to stop the spreading of disease or access to basic health care. Relating to Ebola, this disease was able to spread like wild fire in developing countries because of higher poverty rates that may result in “unhygienic behavior, ignorance, uncompliant” behaviors via social inequalities

Preventing diseases is every countries’ responsibility, whether they are poor or rich. Poor countries lack the knowledge and the money to gain, and expand medical resources. Therefore, many people are not been able to be cured. For wealthy countries, diseases are mutating at incredible speeds. Patients are dying because drug companies do not have enough data to produce vaccines to cure patients. When developed countries help poor countries to cure their people, the developed countries could help underdeveloped countries. Since developed countries can provide greater medical resources to poor countries, people living in the poor countries could be cured. As for the developed countries, they can collect samples from the patients so that the drug companies can produce new vaccines for new diseases. When trying to cure diseases, developed countries and poor countries would have mu...
