Do You Think the Boy’s Mother Made the Proper
Choice in Dealing with Her Son?
In Richard Wright’s “Hunger”, a mother is forced with a difficult decision. Should she “baby” her child and prevent him from fighting, or should she encourage him to fight and “stand up like a man”? Unfortunately, the mother’s decision is a clear one. The mother tells the boy to stand up for himself and fight back.
The story “Hunger” is a story with a very clear message. The message of this story is that a person at any age, instead of hiding from his problems, must face his or her problems. In “Hunger”, the reader understands how to make a living and support himself or herself. After the father of the boy leaves him, the boy and his mother had to become the householders. Wright, very clearly, describes the situation of the boy’s family situation. The main characters are the mother and her son.
The author of this story describes how the mother sends her son to the grocery store. On his way to the grocery store, the boy is attacked by a couple of neighborhood boys. When the boy comes home and tells his mother what happens, the mother tells the boy that he must stand up for himself by sending him to the store to face the boys. Every time the boy goes to the store, the neighborhood boys would beat him up. Finally, the boy got tired of getting beaten and defends himself: he beats the boys with a stick The boy finally wins “the right to the streets of Memphis” meaning that that night, he won the right of being safe on the streets of where he lived, Memphis.
The mother plays a very important part in this story. The mother from the beginning of the story is dealt with a difficult decision of how to feed her 2 boys after her husband leaves her. Since the husband worked, he brought food into the house, but when he left, there was no one who worked. The mother had to get a job, which made her tired. When the mother came home from work tired, she would send the boy to the store. When the mother found out that the neighborhood boys were beating up her son, she repeatedly sent him to the store, so he faces the boys and learns to stand up for himself.
Anna Quindlen’s take on child hunger in her essay School’s out for Summer could be seen as very interesting. Most times, people writing about this topic choose to look at the issue in foreign, low-development countries, but Quindlen decided to bring this topic right to America’s back door. By using pathos and logos, this author effectively makes an argument about how child hunger in America could be solved.
Many people think that a word’s only meaning is the one given in the dictionary. The word hunger is a condition of being hungry for food, but the victims of the Holocaust were hungry for something much more. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the definition of hunger is," The feeling of discomfort or weakness caused by lack of food, coupled with the were not as lucky as we are now. The word hunger not only meant surviving during the Holocaust, but also meant being hungry for a normal life. In fact, there are many more meanings for a single word than in the dictionary.
The narrator in “Famine” by Xu XI was raised by her parents A-Ba and A-Ma in Hong Kong. Her Father made her quit school after her primary school was over which was the through the sixth grade. She was then forced to take care of her aging parents till they died in their mid-nineties. Her father was abusive and very controlling over everything in her life while her mom chose to do nothing about it. She was rarely aloud out with friends or to have much fun at all she never experienced much in life. She wanted to do something she really wanted to learn, but her father said no in order to continue her education to become an English teacher she went on several hunger strikes to rebel her father wants. Food seemed herd to come by in her house particularly, they were forced vegetarians by A-Ba’s decision, they ate very little and the food was also bland. A-Ba and A-ma were not very loving parents, they expected a lot out of their
Many students have disorders that prevent them from reaching standards set by schools. Schools teach students in one way and one way only. Yet people are all different and cannot be taught just one way. By doing that, it is allowing students to fail while others succeed. And eventually those kids and their start to think maybe they just are not cut out for public school and the method used to teach. Instead they reach for homeschooling so they can still learn but they do not have to learn under a system that will fail them. Michael H. Romanowski, professor of education, supports this by
Deciding what is right for a child may be to a high degree a difficult decision to make. The choice to homeschool or send a child to public school can affect the child for the rest of their life. Many parents decide to send their child to either public school, private school or homeschool strictly because of their beliefs or for the child’s best interest. Typically the best choice is to homeschool the child, because it is far more beneficial in the actuality children get more of the one-on-one attention each child needs, the guarantee of the type of education the child will receive and the assurance that the child shall remain out of harms way.
Growing up around kids who have only been home schooled and hasn’t ever been to a public school before, I have noticed glaring problems. When socializing with others, they struggle, and need their parents to ask questions for them. They don’t have a set of standards, and get taught what their parents want to teach. They don’t have extracurricular activities that mold them for the future. When it comes to structure there isn’t any, they do what they want when they want. Their parents aren’t teachers, and just teach them what they want to teach them. Finally they don’t get certain benefits offered by all public schools. All these reasons and many more, is why I think Public schooling can be a better educational system than homeschooling.
Have you ever imagined what it would feel like to be sheltered your entire life due to being homeschooled? Imagine the fact that you don’t have the same opportunities to make new friends or to have more than one teacher. Go to a school dance or experience having a first in-school crush. Homeschooling is not the best option for a child. It is detrimental to their educational development emotionally and mentally. Social isolation, financial burden, and not having the proper qualifications all hinder the possibility of the child not receiving a well-rounded education.
Lip&Feinberg(2008) There are many reasons why parents are choosing homeschooling to their children; they may be concern about the school environment since
There are many options for school that every child has. There is the option of private school, pubic school, boarding school, and home school. In the case of home schooling, there are simply too many disadvantages for the child though out the educational process. There are many reasons for home schooling a child. These reasons include, religious reasons, lack of a good public school district, and distrust of any school district for one’s child, to name a few. Many professionals are completely against the practice of home schooling, Thomas Shannon; executive director of the National School Board Association says that home schooling is “a giant step backward into the 17th century. (Stencel, 1994) These disadvantages include, grading, laws on home schooling, social atmosphere, education and the quality of the teacher.
There is also room for a better quality of learning in a home schooling setting. Parents or tutors in a home school setting do not have to waste time with administrative tasks or repeating directions. They can get down to learning and reviewing. If a child is ok with a subject, they can move on. A child who is home schooled also has the opportunity to take part in a greater number of alternative learning experiences. For example, if a parent feels that a trip to a museum will better get a point across, on the spur of the moment they can take their child. Such spontaneity would not be possible in a regular school classroom. A certain structure is expected in a public school. In home schooling, parents or tutors are free to teach using methods they deem appropriate to the situation and the student.
Homeschooled children’s personal education doesn’t get overlooked. According to “homeschooling vs. public schooling: making the right choice” in the Huffington Post, Marion Lewis states, that public schools focus on teaching the average student; which means any student above or below average doesn’t get what he/she needs. With so many students it’s no wonder many students are getting overlooked. Marion states that class sizes are too big, with class ratios being anywhere from one teacher with twenty students to a whopping thirty students to one teacher. Homeschooling helps fix this problem by having individualized education for each student. With homeschooling, the parent has the opportunity to pick out of the many curriculum options the right one to teach their child the way best suited for them. Marion also mentions how one on one teaching helps the parent (in this case the teacher) find and target the students weaknesses to help focus on fixing those weaknesses.
Sexual Abuse/Rape. "Sexual abuse describes any incident in an adult engages a minor in a sexual act, or exposes the minor to inappropriate sexual behavior or material" When women across Australia where surveyed to see how many have been victims were sexually abused, more than one third of women in Australia have been victims. The limbic system has a sensitivity level 50% more than what it should be after experiencing being sexually abused, the same goes for victims of
The major reasons for homeschooling cited by two-thirds of the parents interviewed are concern about the school environment, dissatisfaction with the academic programs, and the desire for religious or moral instruction (National Center for Education Statistics [NCES], 2004). Parents feel ...
Criticism of homeschooling is vast and there are several different aspects as to why it could be detrimental to the development of a child. One such argument is that experiences of diversity are lost when students are taught in the home. They have lost the opportunity to work with peers of varying culture and social statuses in an academic environment. Such experiences are essential preparation for social and professional life outside the home. Without this training at an early age they may be at a disadvantage when forced to go out into the work force. Another reason why some people disapprove of homeschooling is that since the parents can design what is taught their children only are exposed to the parents’ views. This results in the children having limits on their ability to form their own views and ultimately forming their own unique personality and values. Also to be considered is lack of work ethic built through a structured school setting. The discipline that is learned will be used later on to maintain a steady job and allows them to become accustomed to the rigidity of professional industry. Also in the classroom children ...
Human beings are basically lethargic by nature. They need some kind of motivation or routine to stay active. This applies in the case of children as well. (Clark, Charles S) A lot of attention and are is required by the children, especially the young children, to make them stick to the active routine. This is especially challenging for the stay at homes. It is difficult beyond their imagination to manage this thing. However, on the other end schools can easily manage this. They have certain time period for each of the subjects. Their timings are defined beforehand so the students know they have to get up at this time and come back at the particular time. This entire pre-defined schedule makes the routine of the children in a flow making their minds active. Homeschooling offers no such extracurricular activities which can beneficial for the socialcharacters of the children. In homeschooling they have the same home routine with the same people and same playing environment. (Hill, Paul T.) However, in comparison schools have so much more to offer. Many public schools offer sports and elective options like art and music – these programs are hardly available to homeschool students. Also, the availability of these programs makes the children develop skills and they become confident enough to embrace anykind of change they are going to adopt in their life. Interacting with different people makes their ability to interact better with the passage of time. Children while studying in the schools get to know what it is actually to be like independent. Homeschooling makes them independent at certain extent. Somehow they are dependent on their parents on many things but in schools they have to manage their classes, their schedule, their lunch routine and their bus route every
