The Detrimental Cause of a Child’s Educational Development: Homeschooling Have you ever imagined what it would feel like to be sheltered your entire life due to being homeschooled? Imagine the fact that you don’t have the same opportunities to make new friends or to have more than one teacher. Go to a school dance or experience having a first in-school crush. Homeschooling is not the best option for a child. It is detrimental to their educational development emotionally and mentally. Social isolation, financial burden, and not having the proper qualifications all hinder the possibility of the child not receiving a well-rounded education. Other times when a parent decides that they want to homeschool their child, its most likely for personal beliefs. Some feel they are protecting their child from being exposed to the dangers of sex, drugs, and alcohol. They don’t take into consideration for what the child needs or wants. If a child does not want to be homeschooled, it can affect their education as well as cause stress, anxiety, and depression. In an article written by Michael H. Romanowski, he puts the type of families who choose homeschooling in two distinct categories: ideologues and pedagogues. He states “ideologues argument is essentially religiously based” (Romanowski, 2001); whereas, pedagogues feel that public schools teach without skill, intellect, and creativity. In order for a child to grow and develop to his or her full potential they need positive socialization. It is easy to argue that going to public school can demonstrate both negative and positive socialization, but in order for a child to learn and grow, they must learn how to handle negative situations in life. By not doing so, it will deprive a child from learning humility and how to handle adverse situations. Romanowski stated “critics charge that home schooled children are isolated from the outside world and are socially handicapped. By being sheltered from the real world, children are seldom presented with the opportunities to learn sorely needed social interaction skills.” (Romanowski, 2001). I believe Romanowski demonstrated the impact of isolation homeschooled children inquires. Children who are homeschooled live their life “in a bubble”. They have no opportunity to experience life in multi-cultural classrooms. They are restricted to their family experiences and atmosphere most of the time, which are limited to their own biased lifestyle.
