Marshall Fiorita Professor Jaffe UNIV-150B 5 March 2024 Understanding the Human Trafficking Lecture: The Use of Pathos For starters, this lecture was extremely informative on the dangers and reality of human trafficking. A round of applause is very much needed for Elizabeth Quiroz and Megan Berger, as we thank them for taking the time to open up to us and share their stories. One of the reasons these two gave such strong speeches was due to their use of pathos and emotional appeals. While the other two were still present throughout their lecture, the use of pathos is used as the backbone of the argument. These two are likely to be a lecture to help those who can't help themselves. Their argument is simple, to show us that sexual trafficking victims have both a path to redemption and success. Megan was our first speaker and used pathos through her use of a personal anecdote. She detailed what it was like being trafficked at an early age and how that spiraled her into spending more time as a human trafficking victim, almost providing her comfort in the abuse. Megan quickly gained the sympathy and respect of the room. Her story is one filled with pain and by using descriptive language, everyone in the room had their attention on her. She effectively won over the room, if not by pity, then by respect. Not only did this attention help her spread her message, but it also gave the audience the best example they could receive. Megan confidently standing tall and speaking out against her traffickers gave her power, and demonstrated to us that there is a path to redemption and success for these survivors.
