According to UNODC (United Nation Office on Drug and Crime) which bases its estimates on national statistic, 22,000 victims were come about in 2006. As “smuggling” and “Human trafficking” may seem to be the same thing, they are actually relatively different, some victims come out and tell their stories, and those stories are never the same.
As human smuggling is attempted transportation or illegal entry of a person across and international border. This generally occurs with the consent of the people and after being smuggled they no longer speak to the smuggler after they enter into the country, it has become a result that the people that are illegally entering into the united states are smuggled and not trafficked. Smuggling can be deadly,

Rebekah’s sister lived in Atlanta, Georgia when Rebekah thought she was going to come to her rescue, then everything started to go downhill. As time passed, Rebekah said she survived after being beaten by a man that she trusted, and she loved, but in the beginning it wasn’t like that. This man by the name of Beau, taught her how to dance, how to be proper and how to present herself in a respectful manner. Although Beau was after something else. As the two were talking in the kitchen at the time, Beau told Rebekah that he had people there and she was going to sleep with them, Beau advised her that she could do it willingly or not. After a while he wanted her to recruit some girls because her body was no longer commanding “top of the line” so she was sold. The girls were between the ages of 12 and 16 years old. Within a week she lured in about 60 girls, everything changed when one night she heard a voice, she believed it was from a higher power, she stated that “I looked in the mirror and I just knew, you 're either going to die having sex or die with a bullet in the back of your head, You need to pick one. And I picked the bullet," Her step father then came to her rescue, and then went to job corps. At job corps she met the love of her life which was also a student, who is her husband
Globalization can be defined as the “development of an increasingly integrated global economy marked especially by free-trade, free flow of capital, and the tapping of cheaper foreign labor markets that transcend nation-state boundaries”. As the world becomes a more integrated society we are more readily able to share goods, services, ideas, and technology. Furthermore, we are able to move more freely between nations. With this freedom there comes prosperity for people, companies and entire countries as we can now gain access to things we never had before. But as we expand our ideas and make it easier to cross borders, those with malicious and deceptive intentions are slipping through and committing heinous crimes that all too often go unnoticed.
“Human trafficking coerces and persuades their victims to cross national borders in search of new jobs and better opportunities and after that they are forced into some sort of labor bondage” (At Issue: Human Trafficking 1). Even though trafficking is a problem in almost every country; poorer countries have a bigger problem with it because they are more desperate for work. Just in 2000, the U.S. enacted their first federal anti-trafficking law, called the Victims of Trafficking Protection Act (At Issue: Human Trafficking 1). Trafficking has just begun to receive notice on how big of a problem it actually is. “Proponents of strict anti-trafficking initiatives say that laws and prevention against trafficking are necessary in order to stem the growing tide of large scale organized crime that profits off of smuggling and trafficking” (At Issue: Human Trafficking 1).
Defining human trafficking can be difficult due to the fact that it can be confused with other illegal activities such as smuggling and consented prostitution. In the essay Human Trafficking: Modern Day Slavery In The 21st Century , Shaden Mohajerin states that human trafficking can be defined as the transferring, harboring, and transportation of persons which is accomplished through force, coercion, kidnapping, and deception (...
Human Trafficking is a form of modern slavery that exists throughout the United States and Mexico. In Prayers of The Stolen, there are plenty of examples in Mexico where women and young children were being taken. Some women who have been taken never return back to see their families. They have known to start trafficking along the U.S. Mexico border. This is where human trafficking is developing and experts have said that the U.S. government is trying to police and control the nation’s borders to put a stop to human trafficking.
Although the people who enter the United States are often not legally permitted to enter the United States, Lagon asserts that it is important to note the difference between human smuggling and human trafficking. Lagon states that human smuggling is the illicit transfer of someone across sovereign borders, often with the consent of the person who is being smuggled into the country. He then defines human trafficking as involvement in gross exploitation and control over an individual (2008). The difference is that human trafficking victims do not consent to their situations and later become victims of force and coercion.
It is not only the problem of one country but instead is problem for many different countries. According to Ngwe and Elechi, authors of, “Human Trafficking: The Modern Day Slavery of The 21st Century”, states that between one to four million people are smuggled over international borders annually (2012). Most of those that are trafficked are women and children but some believe that the trafficking of males is increasing due to the need of labor. A majority of those that are trafficked, are sent to wealthier countries and are used for labor, whether forced or domestic and sexual exploitation. Many world leaders believe that this type of crime is a major threat to the security of their nations as well as weakening their social, economic, and political developments within their
Stephanie Hepburn states that, "The US is one of the top 10 destinations for human trafficking—with tens of thousands of people trafficked into the country each year." Many people believe that since the United States is the land of opportunities, events like human trafficking do not exist; little do they know it happens everywhere. Human trafficking is a worldwide problem that plagues the United States; many people are oblivious to the issue and action needs to be taken to protect the innocent people who are involved.
Summary: We see that there are many different aspects and types of human trafficking that everyone should be made aware of. As a whole human trafficking is a lucrative industry raking in $150 BILLION globally. The impact that this industry has on its victims is
the article starts out with a clear emphasis on the cooperation between the different segments of society; cooperation between the state, civil society , and religious groups and institutions on the issues of human trafficking and prostitution, stating how they are immoral, illegal, unethical and how they should be considered as a taboo by societies in Europe, especially Cyprus since the exploitation of women has been rapidly increasing recently. Where all the 800bars and 70 cabarets take advantage of uneducated, poor, unlucky and socially corrupted women at the cost of reasons such as profit and pleasure, which may seem as lame reasons when compared to the life and future of a young woman. The article also states that some of these women, coming from countries such as Romania, Russia. Bulgaria, the Ukraine, Moldavia, and Belarus enter Cyprus unaware of what is included in their job descriptions, and are forced into prostitution by traffickers, which is humanly unacceptable and should without a doubt be banned from societies regardless of what kind of profit they may bring to the traffickers and to the public even as a whole.
“After drug dealing, human trafficking is tied with the illegal arms trade as the second largest criminal industry in the world, and it is the fastest-growing” (Cantrell 1). Traffickers have a virtually unlimited reservoir of victims to draw from since humans reproduce and there will always be a demand for cheap labor or unconventional sex. Human trafficking can easily go unnoticed if people become too involved in their own worlds to realize the signs of human trafficking or the difference between human trafficking and prostitution. These people who simply do not care about the welfare of others are called bystanders. People look out for each other in an act called caring. Those who help people who are in dire need of help are called upstanders.

Many people are brought in from other countries in, more than likely to be put into prostitution. Human smuggling and trafficking can be defined as two different things about moving people. Holly Austin Smith is a survivor of being convinced to run away from home by her captor. There are ways though to be able to stop the trafficker from being able to move the people around illegally. Human smuggling and Trafficking are two different opportunities people seem to earn money for moving them, but one is worse than the other.
According to Karin Lehnardt from Fact Retriever in “five years or less, it has been predicted that human trafficking will surpass the drug trade”. As indicated on hopeforjustice.org, noun human trafficking is “the illegal movement of people, typically for the purpose of forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation.” If one was to know how large the drug trade is, you would understand how devastating this statistic is. “Human trafficking has become a modern form of slavery”, quoted from the Polaris website. People around the globe consider this trade because it is a multi billion industry for criminals that reject the independence of about 20.9 billion people. Human trafficking involves women, children as well as men, but the human traffickers are rather known for kidnapping women. When the victims are being used as slaves for someone else’s personal use they are also being physically and mentally abused by their overseer to rip apart their self esteem and confidence. These helpless victims are commonly kidnapped, taken by force and drugged and shipped off to another country to be taken advantage of as sex slaves
Several crimes in the United States slip into the dark; never noticed and go without justification and punishment annually. One of these unknown crimes is called human trafficking. Human trafficking is the illegal movement of people against their will and rights. Human trafficking is a serious crime that many people are unaware of; it secretly takes place in the United States; it secretly ruins many lives; it secretly goes by to be never discovered or punished by government officials.
Human trafficking, or the selling and buying of people, is a well-hidden yet prominent issue within today’s society. It is both an immoral and horrific topic that needs brought to attention and dealt with. When human beings are manipulated into work, sexual servitude, or economic hardship, human trafficking is occurring. In the year of 2006, only one individual is convicted of human trafficking per 800 victims (UNGIFT). By looking at straight statistics, reasons human trafficking happens, and the toll it has on people, it is very clear that this is a major issue that is happening in our world.
