The Scorch Trials is science fiction novel by James Dashner, and it’s the second book in The Maze Runner Trilogy. It’s based in the future and takes place in the Scorch. The Scorch is the given name for what was originally the Earth’s equator. It’s a very dangerous place and the landscape has small craters caused by lightning storms that often occur. The Scorch is like a barren desert because it’s very sandy, has a rocky terrain, and it is a natural land formation. The Scorch is significant to the story because it’s where some main events, characters, and the climax begins to foreshadow and reveal things in the plot. The major characters in the novel are Thomas, Newt, Teresa, and Minho. James Dashner doesn’t describe Thomas in the novel, he lets the readers decide …show more content…
The gladers have a disease called “the flare” and in order to get a cure they have to reach the end of the trials. This becomes a conflict for them because throughout their journey they face situations that make it difficult for them to get to the end. They have to fight off cranks, survive without much food, and get passed the different stages that come with the scorch. The worst part about everything is that they only have two weeks to make it. If they don't make it in time then all of them will die. The climax of the story starts when Teresa takes Thomas to a cave to give him up as a sacrifice. This was very overwhelming because Thomas was very close with Teresa and now he was being betrayed by his best friend. Thomas attempts to get away, but she forces him in and closes the door. Thomas describes the cave as a “creepy, sickening prison.” (Dashner, 298) This was the turning point of the story, because Thomas was getting near the end of the trials and out of nowhere Teresa decides to take him away and lock him up to be sacrificed. This part of the story made me very furious because he could've escaped by
As we progress though the novel, we a introduced to a variety of characters in the story like Rachel Turner
1. The most crucial point in Chapter 1 is the call Tom receives from his lover. After Nick, Jordan, Tom, and Daisy spent a well mannered night together, the phone rings and Tom rushes to it. When Daisy follows behind it’s revealed it’s a mistress from New York. This is a crucial point as it reveals the falseness in Tom and Daisy’s relationship. Although it initially looked as if all was fine, a larger theme of disingenuousness is behind their relationship.
Anyone as brave as Thomas does not sit back and relax to watch one of his injured friends from being trapped outside as it is about to hit night time. An injured person outside of their safe haven almost equals imminent death. Thomas instinctively ran to his injured comrade in order to save him, to only find out that he himself is also trapped outside of the Glades. "For several seconds, Thomas felt like the world had frozen in place. A thick silence followed the thunderous rumble of the Door closing, and a ...
At the beginning of the novel Tom has just been paroled from prison serving time for killing a man in a fight. Tom feels he was merely defending himself. He feels no guilt or shame about killing the man and would do it again under the same conditions. Tom's morals allowed him to justify the killing. These morals were instilled in him by his family especially from the strength and love of his mother. Tom is looking forward to "laying one foot down in front of another." At this point in he story Tom has his physiological needs met and is going home to his family to meet his needs of safety and security love belonging.
He is yelling at his friends like they haven't had each other's backs for the last four grueling years saving each other on multiple occasions. This illustrates the Contrast and Contradiction signpost because the change in attitude is so sudden and highly unexpected. As readers become dazed they also change their opinion on Newt not knowing if the uncontrollable disease is kicking in, or his calming medicine was hiding this madness all along. Additionally, James Dashner utilizes the Contrast and Contradiction signpost later in his book to make a perplexing situation explicit to readers. It seemed like things were over for Thomas, WICKED about to take his brain, when he wakes up alive with a note from from the person who he had been so intent to meet. “My associates disagree with me on this matter, but I was able to stop this procedure and save your life. It’s now our task to work with the data we already have and build a cure for the Flare. Your participation, and that of the other subjects, is no longer necessary.” (220) Chancellor Paige, a mysterious person who works for the corrupt company WICKED leaves thomas an escape route, going against her own
Thomas and the other people (Gladers) in the society are trying to escape the maze
The setting of the scorch trials starts off with a group of boys in a dormitory. Each boy stayed in a room with 2 old bunk beds, a fan, and a 1 window covered in metal bars. They boys stayed in rooms of 4 boys. The boys are forced to leave the dormitory and end up in a dry, lifeless, desert like place called the flare. The flare is miles and miles of hot desert sand and random old abandoned buildings. They travel across the flare to find the safe haven, which ends up being a stick in the ground that says, “You made it”.
1. Thomas spends the day in the Slammer -the Glade's jail- for breaking the biggest rule the Glade has (Do not go into the maze at night). Newt locks Thomas inside and stresses that Thomas is all right in his book but that he needs to learn order. Chuck comes to visit Thomas. Chuck opens up to Thomas and admits to crying every day. When Thomas hears this, he is overcome with anger. He thinks Chuck belongs home, not here in the Glade. Thomas begins to hate whomever is responsible for their plight. He promises Chuck that he will get them out of the Glade and find Chuck's real parents and family. "I swear I'll get you back home," he says. As the doors
Because this novel follows the "Who Done It" theme, there are the few obvious characters. 1) The inspector, always trying to get an accusation across as to who the murderer is(of course never correct). 2) The doctor, Devon Island's answer to the question nobody ever asked. 3) The old married couple (Mr. + Mrs. Rogers), always passionate to others, until a guest discovers an eerie secret.
In conclusion Thomas is portrayed as a heroic, caring and compassionate character. Thomas proves he is heroic when he risked his life to save both Minho and Alby. He also proves to be caring when it comes to his young friend, Chuck, by acting as a brotherly figure. Minho is portrayed as a brave and intelligent character throughout the novel. Minho can be seen as intelligent when he deceived the entire council of Gladers into agreeing to make Thomas a runner. He is also perceived as a brave character when he ran toward the cluster of grievers, risking his life so he can figure out where their camp is.
The main character, Thomas used to work for WICKED. Thomas is the only one that knows who WICKED actually is and what they really want. This is going to take Thomas, Newt, Minho, Jorge and Brenda
Starting off with the book, The Scorch Trials, whose author is James Dashner, through the evidence in the book,
In the beginning, the main character, Thomas, has his memory wiped so he doesn’t know anything. Over time though, he begins to accept where he is (the Glade) and that the people in the Glade have nothing but each other. Thomas also adapts to the Glade’s slang, and talks like a Glader. He also saves the lives of some Gladers who are his friends, such as Alby. At the end Thomas became a sort of leader, trying to make the best decisions when the rest of the Gladers didn’t know what to do. Thomas talks to the other Gladers like someone would talk to their friends or family, and Thomas does his best to help protect the Gladers. Thomas is hard and cold to the people from WICKED, as at the end one of their workers kills Chuck, one of Thomas’s best friends at the Glade. He also has a crush on a girl named Teresa, and her and Thomas work together during the book.
...uld be seen as the weakest character, Thomasin, that achieves happiness. She is the only character that ends the story well, as with the death of Wildeve she is free to leave a Marriage where she was greatly unhappy and marry the reddleman.
In the Narrative hook, Thomas gets out of the elevator and is introduced to the others. Thomas, who is still confused in where he is meets the leaders Alby and Newt. They tell him that they were put into a large maze with large walls called the Glade, and have been surviving there for years. Also, Thomas understands that there memory has been erased when they arrived at the glade. Having little time to understand what is going on Thomas must fit into their lifestyle, therefore he is introduced to one of the boys in the Labyrinth named
