Work Diary 2
Briefly outline 10 plot points.
1. Thomas spends the day in the Slammer -the Glade's jail- for breaking the biggest rule the Glade has (Do not go into the maze at night). Newt locks Thomas inside and stresses that Thomas is all right in his book but that he needs to learn order. Chuck comes to visit Thomas. Chuck opens up to Thomas and admits to crying every day. When Thomas hears this, he is overcome with anger. He thinks Chuck belongs home, not here in the Glade. Thomas begins to hate whomever is responsible for their plight. He promises Chuck that he will get them out of the Glade and find Chuck's real parents and family. "I swear I'll get you back home," he says. As the doors

close for the night, Alby comes to get Thomas out of the slammer. 2. Thomas is still unnerved after their conversation the day before which consisted of Alby getting back a few of his memories. When he attempts to share these memories with anyone, he starts to choke himself, implying the Creators have some control over them. All he managed to say was to protect the maps and that Thomas helped the creators. Alby's memories of the outside world are not pleasant by how disturbed he seems. Alby is also suspicious of the serum and the Changing. Thomas wants more details about what Alby remembered but Alby won't risk getting choked again and stays quite. Thomas then heads off to bed knowing they are missing some detail that can help them find the exit. He will start his training to become a runner the next morning. 3. Minho wakes him up the next morning and takes him to to a locked small storage closet. The closet is full of running shoes, knifes, all the supplies the runners need in the maze. He also gives Thomas a plastic wristwatch. "Put it on and never take it off. Your life might depend on it." Being a runner will require him to know the time at any moment. Thomas is eager to get going after packing food, water and clothes. After breakfast Thomas has his first glimpse of the Map room. Eight trunks line one of the walls. Minho grabs a sheet of paper and begins drawing what looks like a tic-tack-toe board. In the middle square he writes "GLADE". The remaining eight squares comprise different sections of the Maze. Minho explains that eight runners go out each day with the Keeper, each assigned a different section of the Maze. Every day a section is mapped. Over time, the Gladers were able to recognize that the Maze repeats a pattern of movement about once every month, however they have never seen an exit. Still, they have never given up, which gives Thomas some comfort. 4. The two boys enter Section 8. Thomas follows Minho, observing his skills and tactics as a Runner. Thomas asks Minho about the Griever that stung Alby, the one that they had thought was dead. Minho explains that it was lying completely still one minute and then came to life when Alby kicked it.. He asks Minho where the Grievers go and have they ever followed them. Thomas spots a Beetle Blade in the ivy. He asks Minho why they have the word "WICKED" written on them. Thomas notices something else on the wall: He reads the following words on it: WORLD IN CATASTROPHE: KILLZONE EXPERIMENT DEPARTMENT. The boys return to the Glade and go to the Map room to record their day's work. After that and eating, Thomas heads to bed and as he begins to drift off to sleep, Teresa's voice speaks inside his head. "Tom", she says, "I just triggered the Ending." Thomas wakes to a weak, dim light and hears shouting. He looks at the sky, and sees it's a dull grey instead of the pale light of morning. Looking at his watch he sees that it is a full hour past his wake time. The sky is simply grey. The sun has disappeared form the Glade and has thrown the day's routine into chaos. Thomas's theory is that their sky, that shown down on them for these two years must be artificial, something built by the Creators. 5.
Thomas and all the runners still go out running into the maze since its more important now because if there is no more sun the plants and animals will not survive for long. They encounter a Griever before long. When Minho takes a second look at it, he sees that the Griever has gone. They take off after it. They follow the Griever finally coming to the end at the Cliff. The Griever goes over edge and disappears from sight. Three times they have seen Grievers go over the Cliff edge. It seems that this is how the Grievers leave the Maze. Thomas believes that if the Grievers can leave like this, so can the Gladers. Minho suggests they test this and throw rocks off the cliff and only in a certain spot – a couple square feet- is a disappearing spot as apposed to falling into grey like everywhere else. Thomas and Minho head back straight for the map room, and gather maps and head to Alby and Newt. Newt and Alby look concerned and say “The supplies didn't come up through the Box today as expected.” Minho explains what he and Thomas found. They wonder if there is some way to block the 'Griever Hole'. Chuck then runs over to tell them that Teresa is awake. She tells him to come get her before she forgets everything she has recalled so far. She says "The Maze is a code, Tom. the Maze is a …show more content…
code." 6. Thomas and Teresa go in a corner of the Glade and talk. Teresa says that she remembers Thomas from before but that the memories are quickly disappearing now. She knows about the Maze and she is able to communicate with Thomas telepathically. She knows that she and Thomas were involved in the Maze somehow, and that they helped build it. She knows that there is a reason for their being in the Glade. She knows she triggered the Ending but isn't sure how or for what purpose. She also shows Thomas some words written on her bicep in ink: WICKED is good. Thomas knows he's seen the word WICKED before. They hold hands. The two agree that things are headed toward major change in the Glade. Before they can discuss it any further, Alby appears and he wants answers. He demands to know what Teresa has done. She answers that she has triggered something. Thomas realizes that he Doors have not closed tonight. Alby orders Teresa be put in the Slammer. She telepathically tells him to come visit her. Thomas tries to answer but it doesn't seem to work. The Glade is chaotic; Flashlights are distributed, Nonperishable food is moved to the Homestead which will be their fortress. Thomas tells Newt that he believes they are part of some kind of experiment. Thomas reminds him that now they have to find a way out. There is no safe place to hide. The endgame has arrived they find a way to get out or barricade the Griever Hole. Outside he can hear the first eerie moans of the Grievers approaching. 7. Minho proposes that they stay out in the Maze for days and study as much as they can. Alby thinks the idea is ludicrous. Newt wonders what is wrong with Alby. Alby says that he has gone through a lot due to the Changing. They shouldn't listen to him. They should form a plan and do it. Alby suggests that he be put in charge of studying the Maps. He suggests he go to the Map room immediately. They have already heard Grievers moving around outside. Alby insists. "I gotta do this, be the old me. I need something to dive into", he says. This book has great balances of love interests, actions, and internal conflict with characters. It has an interesting story so far with new pieces coming up every few chapters that are very important. Like Al attacking Tris, Eric talking about Divergents and how the rebels must be eliminated. Tris and Four are developing feelings for each other, which I find weird because he is basically her teacher. They are only two years apart, so the relationship is not that awkward. In this journal I will be predicting, evaluating, and questioning.

Anyone as brave as Thomas does not sit back and relax to watch one of his injured friends from being trapped outside as it is about to hit night time. An injured person outside of their safe haven almost equals imminent death. Thomas instinctively ran to his injured comrade in order to save him, to only find out that he himself is also trapped outside of the Glades. The novel The Maze Runner by James Dashner begins with a teenage boy waking up in an elevator who has no memory of the past, only that his name is Thomas. When the doors of the elevator open up he is pulled into a humongous square surrounding, called the Glade, by a group of teenage boys. The boys in the Glade refer to themselves as the ‘Gladers’. Thomas learns that the Gladers have lived in there for two years and that the Glade is located in the center of a maze which contains a labyrinth of high walls that move during the night and deadly creatures called grievers. The Glade is led by two boys, Alby and Newt; they both maintain order in the Glade by enforcing strict rules and jobs that keep the Gladers busy. A day after Thomas’ arrival an unknown girl arrives in the Glade. This shocks everyone because the Gladers only receive a new person every month, never within the same week. This also shocks everyone because she was the only girl in a maze full of boys. The girl also gives a message that everything is going to change and that she is the last one ever. Right after her message she immediately falls into a coma. The arrival of the girl causes many things to go chaotic including the sun seizing to rise, the Gladers stop receiving supplies from the creators of the maze, and the doors of the Glade that protect the Gladers from the grievers at night stop closing. When the girl, Teresa wakes up she informs Thomas that they both knew each other in the past and that the maze was a code. Thomas and the people who run around the maze to map out the labyrinth, the runners, look through the archives of the maps and find out the code. Then the leader of the runners, Minho, figures out that the cliff they thought was just a cliff was actua...

...iences and thoughts. The novel concludes with the poignant truth humans often try to ignore – that time and aging are inexorable and that the answers to life will most probably never be known to any of us while on earth.
