4,097 pounds of steel, traveling 45 miles per hour, surrounded by other speeding vehicles, and you decided to look at your cell phone. You have just decided to gamble your life in order to check a stupid text? Many teenagers throughout the nation struggle with driving distracted and in my home state of Florida, there isn’t nearly enough done to prevent/put an end to distracted driving. Now it could be argued that, yes there are already laws in place to prevent speeding and other dangerous driving habits. It is true that those laws have not stopped the offense from occurring, but they have reduced it. Driving distracted can include but is not limited to eating while driving, text or talking on the phone while driving, i’ve even heard about teens change their clothes while driving! Anything that doesn't allow you to put 100% of your attention on the road can be qualified as a distraction. Driving distracted is a fatal mistake. Would you drive while writing an essay, eat a salad, or even fly a kite. Obviously these are exaggerations but a distractions in theory be any one of these activities. Now a law won’t end distracted driving in its track, for example speeding has laws in place against it, and motorist still speed. Then look at Germany in 2006 645 deaths occurred due to speeding and 67% occurred on a stretch with no limit at all. This shows that speed limits work. I do not want to criticize the efforts of the FDOT and their attempts to stop this plague. Campaigns and promoting knowledge of distracted driving is a good 1st step, but it isn’t enough.
